This volume is the fourth instalment of the 'Report on the state of the European Union' series. Its shows that if the EU does not want to be ruled by crisis any longer, it must invest in sustainability, political, economic, social and environmental. Europe must turn this elusive and ever-threatening 'crisis' into a chosen and meaningful transition.
One summer night in Houston, Texas, 26-year-old Yvonne Elysee wakes up from sleep, drenched with sweat. She is reluctant to return to sleep, disturbed by the dream she had. However, upon awakening, she is unable to recall the dream. The dream reoccurs for several weeks and begins to affect her work. After her boss confronts her about her lack of productivity, she finally goes to see a psychiatrist, Dr. Wellesley. At the doctor's request, Yvonne begins to keep a journal, recording events concerning the dream. She also gives Dr. Wellesley a book of poetry that she had written years ago. Dr. Wellesley goes through the book of poetry and suggests that Yvonne read several selected poems. The theme of all the poems is one of loneliness and abandonment. After she reads the poems, the dream is evoked in all its clarity. In the dream, Yvonne finds herself trapped in a cave by the sea. However, she does not know the significance of the dream. As doctor and patient discuss the dreams and the poems, Yvonne mentions Bottom Beach and an old building with a broken terrace found there. Dr. Wellesley senses Yvonne's revulsion and dread of the building and suggests that something may have occurred there when Yvonne was younger. She proposes that Yvonne undergo hypnosis as a means of finding out what had happened. Yvonne is reluctant to go through hypnosis; however she confides in her sister who sends her a copy of a diary she has kept during their youth. The diary supports Dr. Wellesley's theory about Bottom Beach and Yvonne decides to go through with the hypnosis in order to confront her fears.
