Roxanne E. Reeves was the only girl of four children. Life was a bit more difficult for Reeves than it was for her brothers. She wanted to do the same things as them, but couldnt or wasnt allowed to. Reeves became a depressed and bitter person. She started on a path of defiance and self- destruction. After Reeves started to write poetry at the age of thirteen, she finally realized how great it was to be able to vent her emotions on paper and still keep them stuffed away from the world. Reeves shared nothing with anyone accept anger and self-pity. She ran from herself as much as she ran from others. At the age of thirty-seven, her spirit was lifted and enlightened. Today, at the age of thirty-nine, Reeves no longer runs to get to where she is going. She often looks back to remember where she came from and always looks forward to where she continues to go. Reeves is proud of her poems because they tell the story of who she was, what she went through and what encourages her to believe in the person she shall become.
Congress does most of its work in committee, and no understanding of that body can be complete without an analysis of its committees and those who shape them. Andrée Reeves now offers a rare glimpse into the workings of committee chairmanship over a span of thirty-three years-how three chairmen operated and how they influenced their committee and its impact. As Reeves demonstrates, the chair is the most important player in a congressional committee-the one who holds more cards than his colleagues and can deal a winning hand or call a bluff. His use of institutional and personal resources affects the committee, the chamber, and public policy. As a case study, Reeves compares the leadership of three disparate and strong House Education and Labor Committee chairmen who served from 1950 to 1984: Graham A. Barden (D-NC), Adam Clayton Powell (D-NY), and Carl D. Perkins (D-KY). She delves into each chairman's background, orientation, and use of resources. Each had his own brand of leadership, she finds, and a pronounced but different impact on Education and Labor. The committee blocked "progressive" legislation under Barden, facilitated Johnson's Great Society under Powell, and fought tooth and nail to maintain its accomplishments under Perkins. Reeves emphasizes also committee development, including the effects of reforms, the relationship between committee composition and policy output, and committee voting patterns. Rather than advancing smoothly and incrementally, Education and Labor developed in stages that coincided with each chairmanship. And over the years covered, it evolved into a more complex, decentralized, and democratic organization. This is an illuminating study of three men who made a difference in our nation's governance. They left a legacy for succeeding chairmen and indeed for the House, and their chairmanships have had a lasting impact on our society.

Meritaton The title of the book refers to Meritaton as the unknown Queen of Akhet-Aton. Indeed, she is difficult to define, one of her trademarks in iconographic art is the bald head and often she does not wear any cloths. The book tries to collect important information and images of the Queen that might have played a pivotal role in the transition of the falling Amarna period back to the conventional state concept under King Tutankhamun. Ankhesenamun The book deals with the life and death of Ankhesenamun, the queen consort at Tutankhamun's side, which can be reconstructed from historical sources. The question of whether she was the mysterious Dahamunzu, who wrote a strange letter to the hostile king of the Hittites, is discussed in detail. On the basis of the images that can be attributed to her, an attempt is also made to define the appearance of Ankhesenamun and to suggest possible mummies, which are discussed in the research (KV 21A or CG 61076). It is possible, however, that the burial of Ankhesenamun has not yet been found, for there are no traces that would indicate a looted tomb.
In the articles included in this collection, Professor Daniel argues that Abbot Joachim of Fiore was a disciple of Bernard of Clairvaux whose tertius status was reformist, not millenialist. Like the other reformists, Gerhoch of Reichersberg and Hildegard of Bingen, Joachim looked forward to the coming of a thoroughly reformed, holy church to be achieved in the near future by reform of the episcopate and the clergy. The status of the Holy Spirit was the culmination of the preceding status, not a radically new beginning. Apocalypticism in both its reformist and in its imperialist versions was part of the mainstream, despite the efforts of the schoolmen to suppress it. The author also sheds significant new light on apocalyptic thinking in the mid-fourteenth century with a thorough analysis of Henry of Kirkstede's vade mecum, Cambridge Corpus Christi 404 and his first edition of Henry's De antichristo et de fine mundi. This study, and three others, are published here for the first time.

A study of the educational opportunities offered after WW1 to Amer. soldiers of the Amer. Expeditionary Forces (AEF). Some stayed in Europe and studied art, attended classes at the Sorbonne, took medical courses at London's Fellowship of Med., read law at the Inns of Court, enrolled in veterinary classes at the Univ. of Edinburgh, and studied French culture and language at numerous French univ. and inst. About 10,000 men were involved in these programs. In addition, 10,000 soldier-students attended the AEF's own univ. at Beaune. For a few months in the spring of 1919, this univ. was the largest in the English-speaking world.
