Dunstan Thompson was an American poet of great promise who burst onto the Anglo-American literary scene during World War II. In the words of one contemporary, Thompson was one of the rising "stars of modern poetry," a writer who might one day join the pantheon of poets like Hart Crane, W.H. Auden, Stephen Spender, and Dylan Thomas. And yet Thompson more or less disappeared from public view by the early 1950s. After publishing two volumes of poetry, a travel book, and a novel, Thompson had only a few scattered magazine publications until his death. A posthumous volume was privately printed in England, but the circulation was small. Here at Last is Love: Selected Poems is the definitive, authorized selection of Thompson's best work, revealing to a wider public the literary vision of a "lost master." The introduction by editor Gregory Wolfe offers the first extended narrative in print relating Thompson's complex personal story. The afterword by distinguished poet and critic Dana Gioia provides a thorough--and just--assessment of his poetic achievement. Thompson's early poetry was not only technically innovative, but saturated with the language and the drama of gay experience during World War II. Yet just a few years after the war, Thompson returned to the Catholic faith of his childhood, only to find that his new poetic voice was out of sync with the times. In spite of the difficulties he faced in his later years, Thompson did not give up writing poetry, continuing to produce quality work. After his reconversion, the poetry shifted in tone and form from a lush romanticism to an urbane classicism. The later work covers a wide range of subjects, from studies of historical figures to devotional lyrics. This volume will not only stir up the debate about Thompson's sexual and religious passions, but also help complete the history of twentieth-century Anglo-American poetry, finally making his work available to scholars and lovers of poetry everywhere.
Your infant is crying and you don’t know why. Your toddler refuses every kind of food–except one. Your preschooler wages war with you each morning over what to wear. Every day, parents struggle unsuccessfully to understand why their children act the way they do. Now child development expert Priscilla J. Dunstan breaks down those barriers to understanding with this revolutionary and accessible guide that teaches a new way of parenting–custom-designed for each child’s personality. The product of eight years of groundbreaking research, this book will help you understand how your child interacts with the world. Dunstan begins from the premise that every child has his or her own dominant sensory “interface” with the world. Some children are highly sensitive to touch, others to sound or to sight. And some are unusually sensitive to all outside stimuli, especially taste and smell. This sensitivity affects how your child behaves, learns, and communicates from the very first days of life. Uncovering your child’s dominant sense–and knowing what your own dominant sense is–is essential for finding common ground and creating bonds of trust and intimacy with your child. Use this book to • take comprehensive “sense tests” to determine your child’s dominant sense–and your own • understand how sensory overload plays out from infancy to age five, at home and in school • learn why your child’s sensory personality shapes the way he or she instinctively reacts to new experiences and people • appreciate the richness of your child’s emotional life, and help your child thrive in the outside world For every parent who has ever looked at a child’s behavior and thought What is he trying to tell me?, Child Sense shows you how to find the answer.
Just 60 miles from New York City awaits the town of Fishkill. Included as part of the 1685 Rombout Patent that purchased land from the Wappinger Indians, Fishkill--Dutch for "fish creek"--has been a quiet witness to several major events in US history. The town housed George Washington, nursed wounded soldiers during the War for Independence, and served as a major supply depot for the Continental Army. Fishkill has grown tremendously from an 18th-century colonial village to a factory and mill town in the 1800s to a modern, yet scenic community filled with outlets for art, music, and entertainment. Fishkill Revisited captures the people, such as Enoch Crosby and James F. Brown, and places, including the Van Wyck Homestead and the Madame Brett Homestead, that have shaped this evolving and growing town.
As a poetic drama, The Stone Ship transports readers on a lifetime's voyage of discovery. Jerome, an amnesiac, wonders how he became a monastic porter at Cloistergarth. His search for the lost years becomes a deep well from which all the fragments of his past emerge; the demonized adolescent rescued by the ghost of his admonitory mother; the pius twelve-year-old who relives the passion play with his siblings; and the boy of eight who declares, "Wasn't no ghost came back! Don't know where he is, but my dad isn't dead." And who is the youth of twenty-three, pursuing priestly studies, but badgered by peers, visits the brawling town Magdalene? While Eli, the extortionist, lays his blackmail trap for the youth. The Sabat nightmare ensues. Whether real or hallucinatory, it delivers at the climax a blow to the stricken conscience of the youth, and a blinding lucidity of recall to the monk. Later, the boy attempts suicide but is caught in the fisherman's nets. Sent off to the Confessor, he is absolved, and the inevitable Lethean river descends. Upon his embarkation, Jerome knows the immense joy of going home as a son to his Father's good pleasure.

Dorothy Buxton led an unusual and intense life. After an upbringing untypical for a girl in rural Victorian England, she found her voice and her vocation during the First World War, insisting people should be able to read a variety of voices on the conflict engulfing Europe. After the war ended, when hunger and deprivation were widespread in many countries, she blazed a trial as a campaigner for the underprivileged. She was the instigator of the Save the Children Fund in 1919 and became a tireless campaigner for refugees and the oppressed wherever she saw them during the next decades. Her life was led during times of social and political upheaval. After the relative calm of the late Victorian and Edwardian period, she lived through: two world wars and the economic depression between them; the rise of communism, fascism and Nazism; the attack on the class divisions in British society; and the change in the status and rights of women. In these momentous times, Dorothy was a radical voice, refusing to be silenced when she saw injustice. Hers is an exciting story. The archive of her life is rich and varied, although not complete, as at various times material has been destroyed, both by her own decision towards the end of her life and that of family members after her death. Yet sufficient letters and papers have survived so that her story can be told partly using her own words. This biography is both the story of one woman’s journey, and a paradigm of the journey taken by many of her contemporaries.

Aeronautical engineers concerned with the analysis of aircraft dynamics and the synthesis of aircraft flight control systems will find an indispensable tool in this analytical treatment of the subject. Approaching these two fields with the conviction that an understanding of either one can illuminate the other, the authors have summarized selected, interconnected techniques that facilitate a high level of insight into the essence of complex systems problems. These techniques are suitable for establishing nominal system designs, for forecasting off-nominal problems, and for diagnosing the root causes of problems that almost inevitably occur in the design process. A complete and self-contained work, the text discusses the early history of aircraft dynamics and control, mathematical models of linear system elements, feedback system analysis, vehicle equations of motion, longitudinal and lateral dynamics, and elementary longitudinal and lateral feedback control. The discussion concludes with such topics as the system design process, inputs and system performance assessment, and multi-loop flight control systems. Originally published in 1974. This deluxe eBook edition of Calm the Crying includes short but clear audio clips of every baby cry described in the book, so you can hear examples of what to listen for. One of the world’s foremost parenting experts offers a revolutionary guide for translating a crying baby’s urgent messages. Like many new parents, Priscilla Dunstan was at her wit’s end trying to ease the crying of her colicky infant son. Then she made a startling discovery: His sounds varied according to his needs, and she could decipher their meaning by tracking the sound as a physical reflex. Unlike learned languages, Dunstan soon realized, every newborn from birth to three months possesses a natural, reflexive communication system for signaling hunger, tiredness, the need to burp, lower gas, and general discomfort. Thirteen years of research culminated in the Dunstan Baby Language, now made available to all caregivers in Calm the Crying. Helping readers learn to recognize and respond to exactly what their baby needs, Dunstan’s remarkable program covers ten sounds in total that can be identified and used to calm a baby. Brimming with diagrams and photographs, Calm the Crying reduces the frustration of wasted time spent addressing the wrong needs. A baby’s cries are a powerful form of communication—now made even more powerful because the message can be understood loud and clear.
Flexible Mindsets in Schools abandons painstaking evolution in favour of a bold, transformative revolution. It blends research and easily implementable practice to drive solutions that give learners and educators the freedom to become self-directed: to unleash questioning, problem-solving and creativity. This key text explores how to blend existing and new practices and unlock the potential of student agency as the pathway towards resilience and adaptation. The Flexible Mindsets Model fuses three components that rely on each other to drive self-directed learning: metacognition, "I CAN" mindset messages and executive function processes. This book presents a roadmap for how to create an environment and culture where learners are aware of what works when, feel safe to take learning-related risks, believe that they are capable and have the tools they need to learn. Flexible Mindsets in Schools will give educators hope that there is a way to revolutionise education to meet the needs of students during these uncertain times by taking small, manageable steps.

The successor to the Chieftain from the 1960's, work began in 1976 on development of a new MBT specifically for the Iranian army, who needed a more capable tank than the Chieftain to suit their climatic and geographical conditions. However, once the revolution occurred in 1979 the British army was reluctantly forced to accept this new design themselves. Once in service there were technical problems resulting in various modifications. However, the Challenger would go on to great success in the Gulf War, playing crucial roles in both Desert Storm and Desert Sabre operations. In this book, Simon Dunstan examines this tank in detail, evaluating its performance both on the test range and in the field of battle.

This book, the last in a four-part series on British Battle Tanks covering the whole history of British armoured warfare, concentrates on those vehicles that have served following the end of World War II up to the present day. Starting with the Centurion, the title explores those types that equipped the armoured divisions lined up on the German plains to resist any potential Soviet offensive, as well as in Korea and Suez, including the Chieftain and Conqueror, and modern tanks such as the Challenger 2 which are still in service today. Covering the many variants of these and other tanks in British service as well as their deployments around the world, including in Afghanistan and Iraq, this illustrated volume is a comprehensive guide to the development of British tanks since the Second World War.
This is the first western book on the subject of wartime Soviet schooling. Its theme is set against the background of Soviet educational history and the events preceding and characterising the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45. It considers how the war affected the already problematic organisation of schools and their formal curriculum content, and examines their enhanced role as socialising agents. It will appeal to historians, educationists and all interested in the impact of war on civilian populations.
