Traditional American folk dances called by Dudley Laufman on the CD have written directions and calls for each dance which are suitable for all ages in communities and school settings. Professional dance musicians on fiddles, harmonica, piano and limberjack perform the traditional jigs and reels. History of this New England style music and dance, lead sheets for the tunes, vocabulary and a word search puzzle are included in the 35-page book. The 74-minute CD has 22 tracks: one track features the calls with music for each dance, the following track is only the music allowing for group leaders or teachers to call the dance figures. Dances: Sweets of May, Ribbon Dance, Danse du Castro, Sir Roger de Coverly, Grand Salute, Que de Loup, Comin Round the Mountain, Pop Smiths Quadrille, Carding, Breakdown, and Seven Step Polka.
At age 86, Dudley is still fully engaged in a 65-year career as a dance caller for local country dances throughout New England. He is the 2009 recipient of a National Heritage Fellow Award. This volume contains poems spanning six decades of Laufman's career.
