Take a police chief who has never before served in law enforcement, push a reluctant but more convenient than qualified doctor into the job of coroner, insert a mayor in his first few weeks of holding any office, and show them a water-filled mine pit with bodies dressed in costumes of the roaring twenties popping to its surface, and what you get is a fiasco of epic proportions. Add to that a ninety-six-year old former Catholic nun who knows the story but will only dish it out in portions to a team of amateurs who are unsure she will live to tell, and an eccentric mining company employee who has everything to lose if the truth be told, and you have what should be an unsolvable crime. True enough for most, but this team of know-nothings will surprise. And their journey to the bottom of the truth is the journey found within the pages of Little Cicero. Little Cicero is the nickname given a small town on Minnesota's picturesque Mesabi Iron Range for its similarity to the Cicero, Illinois of Capone days; the streets of both having been honeycombed with tunnels for ease of travel from speakeasy to speakeasy during prohibition. The story surrounding the town explores the happenings of an earlier time through the ongoing investigation of an old woman who lived it, and the relationship that develops between her and the novice police chief as she relives those early memories reveal two things: the new chief is capable of getting to the truth, and his inexperience hinders him from taking action, even when the truth may involve murder.

Disgusted by publishers and editors who refused to cover important stories for fear of offending advertisers, the press baron E. W. Scripps rejected conventional wisdom and set out to prove that an ad-free newspaper could be profitable entirely on circulation. Duane C. S. Stoltzfus details the history of Scripps’s innovative 1911 experiment, which began in Chicago amid great secrecy. The tabloid-sized newspaper was called the Day Book, and at a penny a copy, it aimed for a working-class market, crusading for higher wages, more unions, safer factories, lower streetcar fares, and women’s right to vote. It also tackled the important stories ignored by most other dailies, like the labor conflicts that shook Chicago in 1912. Though the Day Book’s financial losses steadily declined over the years, it never became profitable, and publication ended in 1917. Nevertheless, Stoltzfus explains that the Day Book served as an important ally of workers, a keen watchdog on advertisers, and it redefined news by providing an example of a paper that treated its readers first as citizens with rights rather than simply as consumers.

This book is the only comprehensive summary of natural resources of Oregon and adds to World Soil Book Series state-level collection. Due to broad latitudinal and elevation differences, Oregon has an exceptionally diverse climate, which exerts a major influence on soil formation. The mean annual temperature in Oregon ranges from 0°C in the Wallowa and Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon to 13 °C in south-central Oregon. The mean annual precipitation ranges from 175 mm in southeastern Oregon to over 5,000 mm at higher elevations in the Coast Range. The dominant vegetation type in Oregon is temperate shrublands, followed by forests dominated by lodgepole pine, Douglas-fir, and mixed conifers, grasslands, subalpine forests, maritime Sitka spruce-western hemlock forests, and ponderosa pine-dominated forests. Oregon is divided into 17 Major Land Resource Areas, the largest of which include the Malheur High Plateau, the Cascade Mountains, the Blue Mountain Foothills, and Blue Mountains. The single most important geologic event in Oregon was the deposition of Mazama ash 7,700 years by the explosion of Mt. Mazama. Oregon has soil series representative of 10 orders, 40 suborders, 114 great groups, 389 subgroups, over 1,000 families, and over 1,700 soil series. Mollisols are the dominant order in Oregon, followed by Aridisols, Inceptisols, Andisols, Ultisols, and Alfisols. Soils in Oregon are used primarily for forest products, livestock grazing, agricultural crops, and wildlife management. Key land use issues in Oregon are climate change; wetland loss; flooding; landslides; volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis; coastal erosion; and wildfires.
