In this book, Duane Jethro creates a framework for understanding the role of the senses in processes of heritage formation. He shows how the senses were important for crafting and successfully deploying new, nation-building heritage projects in South Africa during the postapartheid period. The book also highlights how heritage dynamics are entangled in evocative, changing sensory worlds.Jethro uses five case studies that correlate with the five main Western senses. Examples include touch and the ruination of a series of art memorials; how vision was mobilised to assert the authority of the state-sponsored Freedom Park project in Pretoria; how smell memories of apartheid-era social life in Cape Town informed contemporary struggles for belonging after forced removal; how taste informed debates about the attempted rebranding of Heritage Day as barbecue day; and how the sound of the vuvuzela, popularized during the FIFA 2010 Football World Cup, helped legitimize its unofficial African and South African heritage status. This book makes a valuable contribution to the field of sensory studies and, with its focus on aesthetics and material culture, is in sync with the broader material turn in the humanities.

The Disciple: Into the Word Into the World Study Manual retains the familiar DISCIPLE format with its theme word, theme verse, statement of the human condition, daily and weekly assignments, and prayer for daily use. At some point in their study of every lesson, readers make decisions about how they will respond to Scripture in terms of ministry in the world. Each week persons will be guided in experiencing the gift of Sabbath rest and renewal. Each member of the group needs a study manual and a Bible. The Bible is the text for the study and the study manual will guide group members in their study and preparation for the weekly group session. The study manual also includes suggestions for individual research and study-related activities. Space is provided for taking notes while reading Scripture, for recording thoughts and questions arising out of daily study, and for notes during the weekly group session. The titles of the sessions along with theme words and theme verses, and major persons, events, and topics will set the sequence of the biblical story in the minds of the participants. The principal Scripture for each session follows the chronological movement of the biblical story. Commitment and Time Involved 32 week study Three and one-half to four hours of independent study each week (40 minutes daily for leaders and 30 minutes daily for group members) in preparation for weekly group meetings. Attendance at weekly 2.5 hour meetings Disciple: Into the Word Into the World is the second study in the four-phase Disciple program and is prepared for those who are graduates of Disciple: Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study. This study proclaims the transforming power of Scripture while teaching Bible study skills that take participants deeper into the Scripture. The importance of keeping Bible study related to witness is reinforced while participants are encouraged to practice spiritual disciplines arising out of Scripture for the purpose of changing habits and transforming lives. The study also emphasizes the rhythm of coming to God and going for God, of being in the Word and in the world individually and corporately. This study understands the growing Christian as under discipline in community and in ministry to the world. Disciple: Into the Word Into the World approaches all experiences of life as opportunities for faithful witness and service.
The Bible is filled with stories of people who walked away from face-to-face encounters with Jesus thinking he was a total jerk. This book explores the premise that if Jesus were to return today as he did two thousand years ago, he (or she!) would meet the same fate. That is, his own people would fail to recognize who he is, they would argue with him incessantly, and seek to have him destroyed. Written by a seasoned atheist turned Christian, this book seeks to help non-Christians have a better understanding of Christianity, including why we don't always do as we should. More importantly, at a time when many of our religious and political leaders are calling us to make America hate again, this book gives permission to people of all faiths to reject that call and follow Christ's call to love one another. Christ's message of love and shalom is timeless, and this book seeks to make Jesus present and relevant in our lives today. Join a retired school bus driver as he takes you on a trip through the Bible to see things that many lifelong Christians have not seen, including reasons why we all may want to argue with Jesus. See why there is no such thing as a "Godly" institution, how God has been warning us about global warming for forty years, how men are responsible for most abortions, and how Christians are called to move forward to make the world a better place rather than reverting to a mythological "great" past.

In a world where so many people grow up without a father it's very important that everyone is exposed to a father's heart. Whenever my father would come to see me in some athletic, church or musical event, I would always play my best. There was something about a father's supporting, caring and loving you that brings the best out in you. In this story we see the real heart of a father. A father's heart is always relational and it's always about restoration. A father's heart cannot really be taught to you. A father's heart has to be shown by example in front of you. Then there can be an impartation in your life where you can take on the mantle of a true father.
Millennia have passed since Adam, Enoch, and Noah lived on the Earth, and with all the niceties of modern life, it can be hard for us to think of these Genesis patriarchs as more than just names on a page. But modern revelation has also offered us a more illuminating picture of their lives than has ever been available before. They Walked With God pairs ancient scriptural accounts with these modern revelations to present an intimate biography of nine Genesis patriarchs. Best-selling author Duane S. Crowther offers hundreds of historical, biographical, and cultural details to teach you about these men and the doctrines they followed in a clear, easy-to-follow format that will enrich your study of the entire Old Testament.
This landmark work represents an imaginative and important new analysis of the basic development of the Scriptures through the centuries. Christensen explores the overall unity of the entire Bible, not just as a collection of sixty-six or seventy-two individual books, nor just as the Old and New Testaments, but as a single literary work that comprises today’s Christian Bible. He shows how it emerged over the course of centuries in distinct stages. The Hebrew Scriptures or Old Testament developed in three steps from the formation of the Pentateuch and Prophets that took place up to the time of Josiah in the seventh century B.C.E., followed by the production of the Deuteronomic Canon during and following the Exile, and then the completion of the whole Hebrew Canon as we now have it. This was followed by a second major phase – the development of the Apostolic writings to be added to the First Testament as a Second (or New) Testament. After tracing the growth of the Bible in these stages, Christensen examines the structure and literary art of each major section from the Pentateuch (Torah) to the New Testament.
We must not submit our self to the angst that produces discord. The understanding of truth and peace is possible. Achieving that understanding was not so much of a problem for us when we were children; and, we can return to that state, again. What; you thought your childhood would go away, and the peace thereof would end? Not in the kingdom of God and of His Son. This, we will discover, from the beginning, moving toward the end (for, as of this writing, we have not reached that point, yet). This is our search: to understand and appreciate the products of God, on behalf of mankind, and beyond. To do this, we will start, From the Beginning. By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. (Hebrews 11:8-10)
