“THERE is no more agreeable mode of passing a day, and thereby breaking in upon the tedium of a long summer’s residence in Charleston, than taking advantage occasionally of the opportunity now afforded for a weekly excursion on Cooper River.....” So begins this wonderful reminiscence of South Carolina plantation life, written by Charleston physician—and rice planter himself—John B. Irving. Originally published in 1842, this reads as beautifully today as it did all those years ago.
This autobiography of legendary New Orleans piano man Dr. John--"the hippest, fonkiest cat to come down the musical turnpike" (Library Journal)--is one of the most original, colorful, and acclaimed music books ever. Photos.

Life comes at us from every direction with instructions others think we should follow. But worldly strategies often leave out one key directive--Godþs plan for our lives, the Word-filled life. Dr. Barnett closely studied the nearly 3,000 lives recorded in the Bible, as well as many of the major figures who have crossed the worldþs stage to find those God used to magnify His Name in this world. The common denominator was their choosing to discipline themselves for God, to find the quality life that He wants for each of us. The Scriptures offer instruction on how to have a joyous Word-filled life that includes better relationships with our God, our families, our friends, and a work life that can be satisfying, purposeful and rewarding. This richly researched and practical study guide of Godþs Word shows how He wants to greatly bless us and offers His clear guidelines for how to have an exciting lifetime filled with confidence, purpose, direction and hope"--Back cover.

A cautionary tale of the horrors that can ensue when man experiments with nature, from the father of science fiction, H. G. Wells. A lonely island in the Pacific. The sinister scientist who rules it. And the strange beings who dwell there.... This is the scenario for H. G. Wells’s haunting classic, one of his most intriguing and visionary novels. Living in the late nineteenth century and facing the impact of Darwin’s theory of evolution, Wells wrote this chilling masterpiece about the characteristics of beasts blurring as the animals turn into men. Dr. Moreau, a scientist expelled from his homeland for his cruel vivisection experiments, finds a deserted island that gives him the freedom to continue torturous transplantations and create hideous creatures with manlike intelligence. But as the brutally enforced order on Moreau’s island dissolves, the true consequences of his experiments emerge, and his creations revert to beasts more shocking than nature could devise. A genius of his time, H. G. Wells foresaw the use of what he called the “atom bomb,” the practice of gene-splicing, and men landing on the moon. Now, when these have become part of everyday life, his dark fable serves as a compelling reminder of the horrors that reckless experiments with nature can produce. With an Introduction by Nita A. Farahany and an Afterword by Dr. John L. Flynn

Matthew ends the silence of four hundred years between Malachis prediction and the declaration of the introduction of Jesus. Israel was under the mastery of the Roman Empire. No man of the place of David had been permitted to sit on the position of royalty for a long time. Presently, the quiet is broken and the coming Messiah, pronounced. The book of Matthew trails the Old Testament and is start of the New. It is the interfacing joined between the books. It is composed for the Jews, and it is fittingly set. It underestimates that the course of occasions is known to its perusers. The Old Testament had shut with the picked country, searching for their long-guaranteed king, their messiah. Matthews gospel demonstrates that Jesus was that King, that Messiah. It is the gospel of satisfaction. Matthew exhibits the Lord Jesus in an unmistakably Jewish relationship. Just in this one of the four gospels do we discover a record of the Messiahs assertion: I am not sent but rather unto the lost sheep of the place of Israel (Matt. 15:24). What did His own kin do with Him? (See John 1:11.) In numerical position, the book of Matthew is the fortieth in the ordinance. Thirty-nine books in the Old Testament, then Matthew. Forty is dependably various testing or probation in scripture. Jesus was enticed of the villain for forty days. Israel was in the wild for forty years. David was the best for forty years. Moses was in a royal residence for forty years, then on the rear of a leave for a long time. In this fortieth book of the Bible, Israel is in the place of probation and testing by the nearness of the Messiah in their middle. Jesus Christ is displayed as King to the Jews, and they dismiss Him as their Messiah, as well as their Savior (Matt. 16:21).
Some of the time it is elusive solutions (hard to find answers) to life's issues when we need them the most. "Promises From God's Word," is an assortment of promises from God's Word (The Bible) designed as an important instrument for finding what God has to say about our specific needs or circumstances. Every section contains interesting inquiries regarding the matter, answers from Scripture (with references), and a promise from God's Word in the Authorized King James Translation (unless otherwise indicated). It is Dr. Wylie's expectation that this perusing and hope makes the Bible open, helpful, and accessible for all who reference its pages. Dr. John Thomas Wylie
This is a book about excellence, more particularly about the conditions under which excellence is possible in our kind of society; but it is also—inevitably—a book about equality, about the kinds of equality that can and must be honored, and the kinds that cannot be forced. Such a book must raise some questions which Americans have shown little inclination to discuss rationally. What are the characteristic difficulties a democracy encounters in pursuing excellence? Is there a way out of these difficulties? How equal do we want to be? How equal can we be? What do we mean when we say, “Let the best man win”? Can an equalitarian society tolerate winners? Are we overproducing highly educated people? How much talent can the society absorb? Does society owe a living to talent? Does talent invariably have a chance to exhibit itself in our society? Does every young American have a “right” to a college education? Are we headed toward domination by an intellectual elite? Is it possible for a people to achieve excellence if they don’t believe in anything? Have the American people lost their sense of purpose and the drive which would make it possible for them to achieve excellence?

The lessons in this publication, "God comes To Man In Jesus," are a study of the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ dependent on the accounts of the gospels of Mark and Luke. In spite of the fact that the occasions themselves are well known, there is open door for readers to make new applications to their own needs. The effect of the words and deeds of Jesus is genuinely necessary, so all Christians can come to affirm with the missionary Paul: "It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me." In one sense, Jesus was the most inventive, most uniquely creative individual who at any point lived, yet he was totally dutiful to his Father's will. Today compliance to God is as yet the way to control for inventive living. Jesus Christ makes his kids new people (II Cor. 5:17). Christians are reestablished in knowledge after the image of God. With that tremendous potential, for what reason would we settle for anything less than the best God has for us? Reverend Dr. John Thomas Wylie
The world is saturated with data. We are regularly presented with data in words, tables, and graphics. Students from many academic fields are now expected to be educated about data in one form or another. Yet the typical sequence of courses—introductory statistics and research methods—does not provide sufficient information about how to focus in on a research question, how to access data and work with datasets, or how to present data to various audiences. Principles of Data Management and Presentation addresses this gap. Assuming only that students have some familiarity with basic statistics and research methods, it provides a comprehensive set of principles for understanding and using data as part of a research project, including: • how to narrow a research topic to a specific research question • how to access and organize data that are useful for answering a research question • how to use software such as Stata, SPSS, and SAS to manage data • how to present data so that they convey a clear and effective message A companion website includes material to enhance the learning experience—specifically statistical software code and the datasets used in the examples, in text format as well as Stata, SPSS, and SAS formats. This textbook offers combined coverage of chemistry and physics to help students learn the content needed to master the underlying principles of nursing anesthesia. Because many graduate nursing students are uncomfortable with chemistry and physics, this text presents only the specific content in chemistry and physics that relates to anesthesia. Written in a conversational, accessible style, the book teaches at a highly understandable level, so as to bridge the gap between what students recall from their undergraduate biochemistry and physics courses, and what they need to know as nurse anesthetists. The book contains many illustrations that demonstrate how the scientific concepts relate directly to clinical application in anesthesia. Chapters cover key topics relating to anesthesiology, including the basics of both chemistry and physics, fluids, a concentration on gas laws, states of matter, acids and bases, electrical circuits, radiation, and radioactivity. With this text, students will benefit from: A review of the math, chemistry, and physics basics that relate to clinical anesthesia A conversational presentation of just what students need to know, enabling a fast and complete mastery of clinically relevant scientific concepts Heavy use of illustrations throughout chapters to complement the text End-of-chapter review questions that help students assess their learning PowerPoint Slides available to qualified instructors.

Five thousand years old, Ayurvedic massage has been shown to still the mind and body by lowering metabolic rates and inspiring feelings of peace and calm. Often administered as a part of a three-, five-, or seven-day program, these treatments are an integral part of deep cleansing, rejuvenation, and life-extension Ayurvedic programs called panchakarma or kya kalpa. This book by a noted practitioner features more than 15 of these treatments, each described in step-by-step detail and some synchronized with two therapists for up to two hours in length. It provides the reader with all the tools necessary to begin Ayurvedic treatments as a part of a spa menu or massage therapy program.
The production of biomethane, the renewable version of natural gas, from the biological conversion of organic matter at an industrial scale is fast advancing in several areas of the world. A confluence of factors is fueling the rapid expansion: cost-reducing continuous advances in the technology that make biomethane competitive to fossil natural gas, the emerging concerns over global warming and the need for developing renewable energy resources, and the looming peak oil consequences on the international political-economic stability and in particular the national security of the United States and several major energy importing nations. All types of organic wastes generated by our advanced society, as well as dedicated energy cash crops, can be and are employed separately or combined to produce this renewable fuel. Unlike other biofuels derived from limited food crops, biomethane is a universal natural fuel that is produced in a sustainable fashion because organic fertilizer as a coproduct of the conversion process is used to grow optimally the employed energy crops. Biomethane can be most effectively utilized as a replacement of gasoline and diesel in the transportation sector and is the only practical solution to do so in the foreseeable future. A biomethane-based road transportation system in the United States can generate over 1 trillion dollars in economic output and support 10 million direct and indirect green jobs in manufacturing, engineering, construction, farming, and services. Vision and political will are sufficient to mobilize the vast American natural resources, know-how and economy in order to effect full transition from oil dependency to an indigenous biomethane economy within twenty years.
This book analyzes the writings of Karl Rahner, Karl Barth, and Vedanta Desika to disclose how each construes "piety" and "responsibility" as integral to each other. Each theologian expresses a fundamental unity of love of God and love of neighbour. Sheveland explores this unity in ecumenical and interreligious frameworks, showing how these authors privilege theology as practice, enactment, or simply as ethical. He uses the Renaissance genre of musical polyphony as a methodological tool by which to explore the aesthetic quality and the similarity-in-difference of the theological voices being compared. Polyphony's application to comparative theology includes the avoidance of caricature, domestication, and antagonism. In place of these is offered a fundamentally aesthetic paradigm by which to hear theological voices in terms of their unity-in-distinction.
The book gives unprecedented insight for marriage enrichment by drawing wisdom from successful marriages in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. The author interviewed hundreds of couples from these continents. The respondents who were couples who have been married for 20 to 70 years revealed the secrets of their success and the challenges which are facing married partners today. Thus the book enables you to identify the causes of failure and to discover the secrets of success in marriage and is therefore of unsurpassed value to married partners and those who intend to marry.
In this publication, “A Doctrine On The Christian Life,” I planned to cover this field of Christian Doctrine. I perceive the treatment is lacking. The idea of the subject blocks ampleness. Who could give a satisfactory treatment to such a teaching? One ventures the supposition that the greater part of the adjustments in religious philosophy (Christian Theology) are the correct way. Men are turning their contemplations toward the need and the reality of disclosure, of man’s wrongdoing (sin) and vulnerability, of both the individual and social disappointment of man without God, of the ampleness of God’s grace for man’s need, and of the sureness of Jesus Christ and his saving work for mankind’s history. Man does not live by bread alone. It is more critical that man have something to live for than that he have something to live on; and existence without God isn’t genuine life. Today, Modern man needs to confront that reality and acknowledge it. Reverend Dr. John Thomas Wylie
In this publication, “A Doctrine On The Beginning Of The Christian Faith,”It points to the fact that God is working out through Jesus Christ and his Church a redemptive program on the earth. Redemption is to be the goal and peak of creation. There is nothing more profound in the mind and purpose behind God than his plan to redeem. God works out his redemption regardless of the restricting powers on the earth. The Bible says, “With wicked hands men crucified him, in doing so they carried out what was in the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God” (Acts 2:23). Jesus was crucified on our behalf. This is his redemptive work as it works itself out in human experience. What is becoming a Christian? What sort of a transaction is it? What do we mean by salvation? How is a man saved? These questions strike a chord when we think about them from the point of view of involvement and life. Is salvation something that takes place all at once or is it a continuous process? “The Son of man came to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). Faithful is the saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (I Timothy 1:15). “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). “For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved” (John 3:17). “He that believeth on him is not condemned; but he that believeth not is condemned already because he hath believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God (Jesus Christ)” (John 3:18). Reverend Dr. John Thomas Wylie
Let's put aside any false humility or pride," author John Snyder says, "and come before God with boldness, asking for the moon." He reminds us that the Bible says we are to ask and then ask again. Over and over. Day in. Day out. When the need is so great, so seemingly impossible that only God's direct intervention will ever bring it about, it takes a different kind of prayer. Your 100 Day Prayer is designed to take you straight to the heart and will of God by seeking him for a specific need. This book includes: A dedicated page to express your need before God on the day you start your 100 day of prayer, 100 entries to help you focus your prayer through the truth of God's Word and character, Leading prayers to give you a jump start, Writing space to capture your conversations with the Father and the spiritual transformation you experience day by day, and A concluding page to memorialize how God answered your prayer and transformed you through the process. Your 100 Day Prayer will help you access the power of sustained petitioning prayer. You will find advice and encouragement for pleading one specific need. And you will discover that God does respond. A powerful witness to the place of prayer in the Christian life with a user friendly daily discipline to introduce you to it. Highly recommended. —Thomas W. Gillespie, President Emeritus, Princeton Theological Seminary, New Jersey The concept of Your 100 Days of Prayer is inspired, and can only accomplish great things for our nation and the Kingdom of God if we'll all cooperate and implement it. The Lord is waiting to see if we have the courage and the desire. He is able. —Pat Boone, singer, actor, producer, author, and motivational speaker Conversing with our Father in prayer is critical to spiritual growth. In Your 100 Day Prayer, John Snyder provides very practical and diverse meditations that will most certainly enhance the reader’s prayer life and set the tone for daily living that is focused on God. —Rick Dempsey, Sr. Vice President, The Walt Disney Studios In today's Internet age of instant gratification, it's all too easy for Christians to "want it now" and expect the Lord to instantly honor Matthew 7:7: "Ask and it will be given to you . . ." John Snyder's excellent book provides a beautiful pathway to journal our 100 days of focused prayer as we are transformed in the process. —David Pack, Saddleback Church/ Orange County, Calif. Grammy winning Recording Artist & Music Producer In this 100 day pilgrimage, Dr. Snyder has woven four great Christian traditions together—daily scripture reading, devotional insight, prayer, and journaling. You cannot practice these disciplines faithfully and emerge unchanged. I think that you will find when the journey has ended, that God has been your guide and your destination.” —Dr. Ed Ewart, MOO Church, Mission Viejo, CA If you already enjoy a daily, satisfying prayer life, don't read this book. But if you're looking for something to stimulate you to become more faithful and systematic, John Snyder's Your 100 Day Prayer offers you an opportunity to focus on talking to God daily and making it an ongoing habit. —Cecil Murphey, author or co-author of more than 100 books including 90 Minutes in Heaven and Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story John Snyder has taken a chapter out of his own life and made it available to all of us...Your 100 Day Prayer is an incredibly practical and powerful tool for any individual or family who desires to develop and strengthen their prayer life. —Matt Kees, Director, Christian Musician Summit conferences, and Music Producer
Dr. Tommy John's unique program: a diet, lifestyle, and movement plan (Rethink. Rebuild. Replenish. Recover) for injury- and performance-proofing young athletes in every sport Beginning as early as age 6 and continuing through the teenage years and on into their twenties, both male and female athletes are more at risk of serious injuries at younger ages than ever before. Dr. Tommy John, son of lefty pitcher Tommy John and also a sports performance and healing specialist, offers an invaluable diet, lifestyle, and movement plan (Rethink. Rebuild. Replenish. Recover) for injury- and performance-proofing young athletes in every sport. Dr. John explores the sudden rise of Tommy John surgeries being performed on young athletes today, as well as the many injuries--and the surgeries required to fix them--increasing at an alarming rate in baseball and all youth sports. Dr. John's book outlines the three top causes behind this "injury epidemic": The American lifestyle, the business of youth sports (from coaches to corporations), and the decisions we believe as parents are truly benefiting our children. Minimize Injury, Maximize Performance focuses on prevention, and also offers tips on how to tailor the advice for athletes coming back from an injury, with over 120 black and white photographs.
Social science and behavioral science students and researchers are often confronted with data that are categorical, count a phenomenon, or have been collected over time. Sociologists examining the likelihood of interracial marriage, political scientists studying voting behavior, criminologists counting the number of offenses people commit, health scientists studying the number of suicides across neighborhoods, and psychologists modeling mental health treatment success are all interested in outcomes that are not continuous. Instead, they must measure and analyze these events and phenomena in a discrete manner. This book provides an introduction and overview of several statistical models designed for these types of outcomes—all presented with the assumption that the reader has only a good working knowledge of elementary algebra and has taken introductory statistics and linear regression analysis. Numerous examples from the social sciences demonstrate the practical applications of these models. The chapters address logistic and probit models, including those designed for ordinal and nominal variables, regular and zero-inflated Poisson and negative binomial models, event history models, models for longitudinal data, multilevel models, and data reduction techniques such as principal components and factor analysis. Each chapter discusses how to utilize the models and test their assumptions with the statistical software Stata, and also includes exercise sets so readers can practice using these techniques. Appendices show how to estimate the models in SAS, SPSS, and R; provide a review of regression assumptions using simulations; and discuss missing data. A companion website includes downloadable versions of all the data sets used in the book.
Liberal democracy, it has been claimed, stands at the end of history. But there are hidden internal strains that could threaten its fabric. Nature and Liberty explores three of the most important practical problems of modern liberal politics - those connected with ethnicity and race, sex and the family, and bureaucratized government. The author traces liberals' difficulties in dealing with these problems to their own reluctance to have recourse to nature as a guide for political life.
Her work is one important work in the ministry of her husband who God called out from the called out ones. Her contributions to her husband’s effectiveness cannot be overestimated. Many times congregations expect a minister to produce effectively in a spiritual manner but overlook the efforts of his wife who is supportive of the work of their pastors or ministers. It would do us well to recognize the first lady, or the minister’s or pastor’s wife, as an effective tool God has placed in the presence of the people her husband pastors or ministers. I ask myself, Who can find a virtuous woman? Look at the minister’s, preacher’s, or pastor’s wife who so diligently works alongside her husband as God intends and in her own spiritual authentic character. A minister’s wife? Yes, indeed! One of the highest privileges and rarest opportunities ever afforded God any women. No investigation of shepherd would be finished without a part on the shepherdess. The significance of her commitment to her better half's adequacy can't be overestimated. It is my expectation that each minister, pastor, or forthcoming minister will make this material required perusing for his helpmate. For exceptionally clear reasons, I am putting the pen into the hand of my significant other. Those women who are spouses of pastors and ministers ought to likewise benefit profoundly from this reading. My significant other is the queen of our parsonage and is dealt with all things considered with all due respect that she is. Again, she knows the charm and beauty of love, sincerity, goodness, and purity. She realizes the true meaning of loveliness as the reflection, as her life of holy living gives new meaning, hope, and purpose to that of her husband and her children. Others may say, “Behold the handmaiden of the Lord.”
This book has obviously been written for those who officiate, umpire, referee and judge sporting events. It has also been purposely designed for leaders in business, other professions and avocations to encourage thinking outside the box while establishing, reviewing or modifying their philosophy of leadership. If you look at this book only as through the eyes of a sports official, the covers may be too far apartso read between the lines! Hopefully this book will help trap you into doing your own thinking for developing, re-thinking or re-framing your own leadership style. In other words, the author is challenging you to personalize your own style of leadership and make it work for you. The author also believes that many of you will be more focused in your philosophy of leadership and rewarded if you apply some of these thoughts and concepts to your own life style.
As reviewed by New York Times best-selling author Ellen Tanner Marsh, In clear, heartfelt prose, DeVore describes a brave and unflinching confrontation with his past, made necessary in order for him to have a more meaningful future. War, he realized, isnt just one mans experienceits the sum total experience of an entire country. To stop wars, he argues, we must understand them and why we seem to need them. The gut-wrenching brutality experienced by American soldiers in Vietnam was for many the beginning of a lifelong personal struggle. Unlike many veterans, who were unable to cope after returning to civilian life, John DeVore moved with facility from success as an Army officer to success in corporate America. Nevertheless, like many other veterans, the war haunted DeVore and finallyin a process he narrates in this bookcompelled him to make a commitment to free himself and our country from the addiction to war. Joel Andreas, author of Addicted to War: Why the U.S. Cant Kick Militarism John DeVores important book chronicles the remarkable transformation of a professional soldier to a spiritual warrior of peace. A must-read for those interested in exploring the possibilities of a less violent global future. Manfred B. Steger, professor of politics and government, Illinois State University; research fellow, Globalization Research Center, University of Hawaii at Manoa DeVore offers a simple explanation of the interconnectedness of his Western cultural conditioning, globalization, the reality of war, his civilian and military careers, and his search for spiritual roots. He certainly is a living example of the fearlessness and desire to help others that can begin to emerge through willingness to work with personal emotional turbulence, fear, anger, pride, envy, selfishness, ignorance, etc., on a daily basis. His story really helps us experience that it is possible to turn bad things to good things. Do you really want the mission to succeed? Are you prepared to live within clear boundaries? Are you ready to align yourself with a greater purpose? Do you have what it takes? Winning on Purpose offers leaders a way to organize congregations for success by creating structures that enable church life and health. As a comprehensive and powerful application of the biblical call to mission, Winning on Purpose sets forth the Accountable Leadership strategy.
