This is the never before told story of hundreds of Americans who went to war in defense of their beliefs, to seek adventure and to see some of the world beyond their rural Pennsylvania neighborhoods. Developed largely in the words of the soldiers of the 145th Pennsylvania Infantry, Common Men highlights some of the men's lives before the war and then carries the reader through trials and triumphs from enlistment, Jubilant send-off, action from Antietam through Gettysburg and casualty, Democracy and the Union are sustained through the actions of common men, men not always given the best of orders.
Citing Milton's major prose works from the civil war through to the Restoration, Walker reveals a Milton who is antiformalist in his constitutional thought, unrevolutionary in his general socio-political outlook, and markedly illiberal on a wide range of social, religious and political issues. Walker's book is thus a highly provocative challenge to the current consensus that Milton is an early modern proponent of republicanism, radicalism, revolution and liberalism.

Mary Tighe's unpublished courtship novel Selena is one of the great unknown treasures of British Romanticism. Based on the only known copy of the manuscript, housed in the National Library of Ireland, Harriet Kramer Linkin's scrupulously annotated edition traces the work's long journey from manuscript to print and establishes Selena's importance for understanding the history of the novel, fiction by women, Anglo-Irish fiction, silver-fork novels and the Romantic period.
In his study of Romantic naturalists and early environmentalists, Hall claims the creation of the National Trust in the United Kingdom and the National Parks in the United States were both shaped by literature. Central to Hall's project are links among Gilbert White, William Wordsworth, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Octavia Hill and John Muir in the context of the vexed relationship between the ecosystem and the machine during the nineteenth century.

Where were you when you first heard of the Law of Attraction? Was it watching a DVD, reading a book, or did a friend tell you excitingly about something new they discovered that explained so much? Each of us - even as we found this phrase in Internet searches, coming up again and again - has found something that intrigued us, something that answered questions, something that posed new ones. The Law of Attraction has caused new discussion groups to pop up, so that people could share their experiences and help each other explore this new topic. In the early 1900's an informal philosophy of New Thought found one of its voices in William Walker Atkinson, who wrote over a hundred books on this subject. The selected three books published in this collection all define and describe the Law of Attraction as well as providing practical exercises any reader can use to improve their life. The ideas still ring true today as they did when first published. Get Your Copy Now.
In the seventeenth century Bristol was the second city of England. It was the main west coast port, an internationally important entrepot and rich trading centre. Industry flourished, too, with manufacturing and processing industries like soap making and gunpowder production responsible for Bristol's considerable wealth. In consequence, control of the town became one of the chief objectives of both armies during the civil war which raged in England in the 1640s. Beginning the war under Parliamentarian control, the city changed hands twice, with each transfer having a major effect of the war effort of both sides. This new study argues that when the Royalists captured Bristol in July 1643 they gained not only the city, but also the materials and facilities that literally allowed them to remain in the war. Under Royalist rule Bristol became a vital centre for military and government activities, as well as a centre for importing arms from Europe and becoming almost the alternative Royalist capital. The loss of Bristol in 1645 was therefore a huge blow to the Royalist cause. This book is surely one of the most important written on the civil wars in recent times. Its radical reinterpretation of the pivotal role of England's second city will ensure it a place on bookshelves of anyone interested in the most turbulent years of the seventeenth century.
The Little Unique Town that Disappeared by Rev. Dr. Lester Craig Revilletown, Louisiana, was founded in 1870s by freed slaves. Less than a hundred years later, citizens sued the Georgia Gulf Corporation for their release of dangerous chemicals. All 106 residents were relocated and the buildings were torn down. Rev. Dr. Lester Craig was born and raised in Revilletown. Though poor in material goods the town was rich in spirit – more an extended family than a town. Discipline and love filled the homes and everyone made sure everyone else had enough to eat. Craig’s parents were hardworking and God-fearing, raising their seven children in a close-knit family. He captures the details of large family life: busy mealtimes, hand-me-downs, and practical jokes. While his family might not have always had the best, they were always able to make the best of what they did have. Craig left Revilletown to attend college and serve in Vietnam. Despite his travels, and the physical loss of his hometown, the spirit and faith of Revilletown have stayed with him.
Situated along the Georgia border, Augusta is known for its golf, beautiful private gardens and southern culture. But its history is also brimming with strange stories yet to be told. A beleaguered German princess gave the city its name. A "haunted pillar" survived a tornado that destroyed the area in 1878. The famous Wright brothers opened a branch of their flying school here in 1911. Author and historian Tom Mack uncovers and celebrates these gems hidden in Augusta's rich and teeming history.
Exploring the relationship between poverty and religion in William Wordsworth’s poetry, Heidi J. Snow challenges the traditional view that the poet’s early years were primarily irreligious. She argues that this idea, based on the equation of Christianity with Anglicanism, discounts the richly varied theological landscape of Wordsworth’s youth. Reading Wordsworth’s poetry in the context of the diversity of theological views represented in his milieu, Snow shows that poems like The Excursion reject Anglican orthodoxy in favor of a meld of Quaker, Methodist, and deist theologies. Rather than support a narrative of Wordsworth’s life as a journey from atheism to orthodoxy or even from radicalism to conservatism, therefore, Wordsworth’s body of work consistently makes a case for a sensitive approach to the problem of the poor that relies on a multifaceted theological perspective. To reconstruct the religious context in which Wordsworth wrote in its complexity, Snow makes extensive use of the materials in the record offices of the Lake District and the religious sermons and congregational records for the orthodox Anglican, evangelical Anglican, Methodist, and Quaker congregations. Snow’s depiction of the multiple religious traditions in the Lake District complicates our understanding of Wordsworth’s theological influences and his views on the poor.
This book focuses on the role of the state in promoting a country's long-term technological progress and industrial leadership. Throughout history, a nation's rise to dominance has invariably been followed by its fall; the dominant powers of today are not the same ones that controlled the world three hundred years ago. In the same manner, economic dominance has usually been fleeting, as leading nations have routinely been caught up and surpassed by challengers. This study looks at Schumpeterian growth - currently the most important source of economic growth - which credits the ability to use technological progress for the benefit of industrial leadership as the key motor of national development and economic success. Contrasting the experiences of five great powers (Britain, France, Germany, the USA and Japan) during five periods of technological and industrial leadership, from the Industrial Revolution to the beginning of the twenty-first century, the book draws on historical and comparative methods to draw causal inferences about international progress and leadership. It explores various factors that promote or hinder technological advancement and how these can in turn effect national development. It concludes that where states have forged ahead and maintained a lead over their rivals, it is because consensus and cohesion prevented vested interests from growing powerful enough to block structural economic change. By applying economic theory to long-term historical models, this book offers a fascinating perspective on the causes and effects of national growth and industrial leadership. It will be invaluable reading for anyone with an interest in international relations and global economic trends, both modern and historical.

Open Letter From Nobel Peace Prize Laureates and Citizens of the World Against War and Nuclear Weapons: We reject war and nuclear weapons. We call on all our fellow citizens of the world to join us in protecting our planet, home for all of us, from those who threaten to destroy it. The invasion of Ukraine has created a humanitarian disaster for its people. The entire world is facing the greatest threat in history: a large-scale nuclear war, capable of destroying our civilization and causing vast ecological damage across the Earth. We call for an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of all Russian military forces from Ukraine, and for all possible efforts at dialogue to prevent this ultimate disaster. We call on Russia and NATO to explicitly renounce any use of nuclear weapons in this conflict, and we call on all countries to support the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons to ensure that we never again face a similar moment of nuclear danger. The time to ban and eliminate nuclear weapons is now. It is the only way to guarantee that the inhabitants of the planet will be safe from this existential threat. It is either the end of nuclear weapons, or the end of us. We reject governance through imposition and threats, and we advocate for dialogue, coexistence and justice. A world without nuclear weapons is necessary and possible, and together we will build it. It is urgent that we give peace a chance. This book is about story, and our dependence as human beings on belief in stories. Science tells us that every direct experience becomes stored in our brains in the form of story. The moment when a direct experience becomes a thought, it is already part of a story. We build our individual stories throughout our lives within the context of cultural stories; then we cling to our stories as if they were truth itself. We lose sense of our stories as perception. Perception is just another way of saying, "the story I believe in." We reject the stories of others when they conflict with our own, and we cling to our stories even when they cause us pain. Story and Belief examines the cultural and religious stories that frame our lives, and the ways in which we can reach beyond the layers of story to our inner selves, where it is possible to create new stories that are happier and healthier ones.

The spectre of 'Communism' was used to justify the expansion of American global leadership throughout the twentieth century. Nowhere was this more evident than in their 'backyard' of Latin America. The fear and hysteria created by the perceived communist menace justified the demonization of democratic reformers, the mischaracterization of political unrest, the overthrow of democratic regimes, the prolonged support of military dictatorships and the continued political and economic subservience of much of Latin America to the USA throughout the era of the Cold War and beyond. 'Pretext: Anti-Communism in Latin America' examines the origins of this hysteria from 1930-1965. It suggests that the academic focus on the rise and fall of communism has distracted analysis from the non-communist reformers who fought for democracy, social justice, and independent economic development. This timely reinterpretation of the origins of the Cold War in Latin America seeks to explain the continuing power imbalance between the US and the Latin American republics.

This book, originally published in 1943, is a biographical account of Donald Douglas (1892-1981), the influential American aircraft industrialist, engineer and aviation pioneer who designed and built the Douglas Cloudster—the first airplane with a payload greater than its own weight. Douglas was the founder of the Douglas Aircraft Company in 1921 (the company later merged into McDonnell Douglas Corporation) and, under his leadership, the company became one of the leaders of the commercial aircraft industry, engaging in a decades-long struggle for supremacy with arch-rival William Boeing and the company he founded, Boeing. A gripping read for aviation enthusiasts.
Three decades of research into retailing in England from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries has established a seemingly clear narrative: fixed shops were widespread from an early date; 'modern' methods of retailing were common from at least the early eighteenth century; shopping was a skilled activity throughout the period; and consumers were increasingly part of - and aware of being part of - a polite and fashionable culture. All of this is true, but is it the only narrative? Research has shown that markets were still important well into the nineteenth century and small scale producer-retailers co-existed with modern warehouses. Many shops were not smart. The development of modern retailing therefore was a fractured and fragmented process. This book presents a reassessment of the standard view by challenging the usefulness of concepts like 'traditional' and 'modern', examining consumption and retailing as inextricably linked aspects of a single process, and by using the idea of narrative to discuss the roles and perceptions of the various actors in this process - such as retailers, shoppers/consumers, local authorities and commentators. The book is therefore structured around some of these competing narratives in order to provide a richer and more varied picture of consumption and retailing in provincial England.
The essential guide to American Methodism revised and updated through 2020. Four of Methodism’s most respected teachers give us a vivid picture of 260 years of Methodist experience in America. The revised edition updates the Methodist movement’s story through 2020, including the social, political, economic, technological, and global disruptions that cause faith communities and denominations to pull apart. American Methodism Revised and Updated begins with the explosion of evangelical Pietism and revolutionary Methodism, the First Great Awakening, as an independent nation was formed. It then highlights key 19th century themes and Methodist contributions, such as spreading scriptural holiness through missions and literature, planting tens of thousands of Sunday schools and churches by Circuit Riders, the pivotal Methodist schism between abolitionists and enslavers, the innovative building of schools and hospitals into the next century, and the revivalism of the Second Great Awakening. Finally it explores the movements of 20th century Methodism, including the expansion of home and foreign missions, the Methodist drive for Prohibition, the decision for nationwide reunification on the cusp of World War II, reunification with the United Brethren during the Vietnam War, the Methodist ordination of women during the 1950s, Black Methodist leadership in the 1960s Civil Rights movement, and the liturgical renewal or reformation of worship (ancient and future).
Australia’s Nuclear Policy develops a holistic conception of ‘nuclear policy’ that extends across the three distinct but related spheres - strategic, economic and normative - that have arisen from the basic ‘dual-use’ dilemma of nuclear technology. Existing scholarship on Australia’s nuclear policy has generally grappled with each of these spheres in isolation. In a fresh evaluation of the field, the authors investigate the broader aims of Australian nuclear policy and detail how successive Australian governments have engaged with nuclear issues since 1945.

A systematic critical survey of American strategic thinking and the strategic culture in which it is formed. In particular, this book seeks to interrogate the theory and strategy of nuclear deterrence, and its relationship to the concept of missile defence. Drawing widely on the theoretical literature in international relations and strategic studies, it identifies the key groups that have competed over America's nuclear policy post-1945 and examines how the concept of missile defence went through a process of gestation and intellectual contestation, leading to its eventual legitimization in the late 1990s. Steff sheds light on the individuals, groups, institutions and processes that led to the decision by the Bush administration to deploy a national missile defence shield. Additionally, Steff systematically examines the impact deployment had on the calculations of Russia and China. In the process he explains that their reactions under the Bush administration have continued into the Obama era, revealing that a new great power security dilemma has broken out. This, Steff shows, has led to a decline in great power relations as a consequence.

Mind-reading typically refers to the ability of discerning or interpreting someone else's thoughts, feelings, or intentions. Mind Reading has two components: human-based, and (ii) device-based (artificial intelligence). Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to programming computers to do tasks that normally require human intelligence, like learning, problem-solving, and understanding language. It is like giving computers the ability to think and make decisions on their own, similar to how humans do. AI helps machines learn from data, adapt to new situations, and perform tasks without being explicitly programmed for each step. This book covers the topics on human-based and device-based mind reading and interpretation (artificial intelligence, that is divided into 32 chapters and the following 8 sections: (i) Mind-Reading and Artificial Intelligence: Introduction and Overview, (ii) Human-Based Mind Reading, (iii) Artificial Intelligence: Introduction & Types of Learning, (iv) Device-Based Mind Reading And Virtual Assistants, (v) Applications and Opportunities of Artificial Intelligence, (vi) Artificial Intelligence: Ethical Issues, Risks and Regulations, (vii) Artificial Consciousness, and (viii) Artificial Intelligence in India: Status, and the Way Forward.
