Developed countries throughout the world are experiencing population ageing and the new challenges that arise from this change in the national demographic. The phenomenon of an ageing population has necessitated policy reform regarding the role of the state in providing income in retirement and the whole wider social meaning of later life. The politics of ageing have become a key issue for young and old voters alike as well as those who seek to represent them. Politicians carefully consider strategies for developing relationships with older voters in the context of both policy decisions and campaigns as issues that directly affect an ageing population often prove crucial in local and national election campaigns. 'Going Grey' provides insight into how ageing and the increased proportion of older voters is being framed by the media. It investigates emerging discourses on the topic founded on economic pessimism and predictions of inter-generational conflict. By bringing together political communication and media discourses and placing them within the wider context of an ageist society this unique contribution demands us to re-think how the media portray and frame later life and examines the strategic electoral dilemmas facing political parties today. It provides an original and timely resource for scholars, students and general readers interested in understanding more about the mediation of, and the strategic campaign responses to, rapidly ageing populations.
Defining Civil and Political Rights provides a comprehensive analysis and commentary on the decisions – technically known as views – of the United Nations Human Rights Committee, for use by human rights lawyers throughout the world. Each of the substantive rights and freedoms set out in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights is considered in detail, by analysis of final reviews and comments of the Human Rights Committee. This second edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to take account of recent jurisprudence on the Human Rights Committee. New material has been added based upon substantive areas of the committee's jurisprudence.
Human rights are internationally agreed values, standards or rules regulating the conduct of states towards their own citizens and towards non-citizens. Human rights are, in the words of the preamble of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: 'a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations.' These rules, which states have imposed upon themselves , serve to restrict the freedom of states to act towards their entire population : Citizens as well non-citizens, men as well as women /adults as well as children, whites and nonwhites, believers, married persons and the unmarried , heterosexuals as well as homosexuals. The situation is different from the past, when states, or rather their princes.
As a phenomenologist Lacoste is concerned with investigating the human aptitude for experience; as a theologian Lacoste is interested in humanity’s potential for a relationship with the divine, what he terms the ‘liturgical relationship’. Beginning from the proposition that prayer is a theme that occurs throughout Lacoste’s writing, and using this proposition as a heuristic through which to view, interpret and critique his thought, this book examines Lacoste’s place amid both the recent ‘theological turn’ in French thought and the post-war emergence of la nouvelle théologie. Drawing upon unpublished and out of print material previously only available in French, Romanian or German, the book will be of interest to scholars of philosophy, phenomenology and theology.
Science is beginning to understand that our thinking has a deep and complicated relationship with our eating. Our thoughts before, during, and after eating profoundly impact our food choices, our digestive health, our brain health, and more. Yet most of us give very little thought to our food beyond taste and basic nutritional content. In this revolutionary book, Dr. Caroline Leaf packs an incredible amount of information that will change readers' eating and thinking habits for the better. Rather than getting caught up in whether we should go raw or vegan, gluten-free or paleo, Leaf shows readers that every individual is unique, has unique nutritional needs, and has the power to impact their own health through the right thinking. There's no one perfect solution. Rather, she shows us how to change the way we think about food and put ourselves on the path towards health. Anyone who is tired of traditional diet plans that don't work, who struggles with emotional eating, or who simply isn't satisfied with their level of health will find in this book the key to discovering how they can begin developing a healthier body, brain, and spirit.
Hamish MacCunn’s career unfolded amidst the restructuring of British musical culture and the rewriting of the Western European political landscape. Having risen to fame in the late 1880s with a string of Scottish works, MacCunn further highlighted his Caledonian background by cultivating a Scottish artistic persona that defined him throughout his life. His attempts to broaden his appeal ultimately failed. This, along with his difficult personality and a series of poor professional choices, led to the slow demise of what began as a promising career. As the first comprehensive study of MacCunn’s life, the book illustrates how social and cultural situations as well as his personal relationships influenced his career. While his fierce loyalty to his friends endeared him to influential people who helped him throughout his career, his refusal of his Royal College of Music degree and his failure to complete early commissions assured him a difficult path. Drawing upon primary resources, Oates traces the development of MacCunn’s music chronologically, juxtaposing his Scottish and more cosmopolitan compositions within a discussion of his life and other professional activities. This picture of MacCunn and his music reveals on the one hand a talented composer who played a role in establishing national identity in British music and, on the other, a man who unwittingly sabotaged his own career.
Innovative and accessibly written, Picturing Scotland examines the genesis and production of the first author-approved illustrations for Sir Walter' Scott's Waverley novels in Scotland. Consulting numerous neglected primary sources, Richard J. Hill demonstrates that Scott, usually seen as disinterested in the mechanics of publishing, actually was at the forefront of one of the most innovative publishing and printing trends, the illustrated novel. Hill examines the historical precedents, influences, and innovations behind the creation of the illustrated editions, tracking Scott's personal interaction with the mechanics of the printing and illustration process, as well as Scott's opinions on visual representations of literary scenes. Of particular interest is Scott's relationships with William Allan and Alexander Nasmyth, two important early nineteenth-century Scottish artists. As the first illustrators of the Waverley novels, their work provided a template for one of the more lucrative publishing phenomena. Informed by meticulous close readings of Scott's novels and augmented by a bibliographic catalogue of illustrations, Picturing Scotland is an important contribution to Scott studies, the development of the illustrated novel, and publishing history.
Taking up works by Samuel Richardson, James Fenimore Cooper, Sir Walter Scott, and Catharine Maria Sedgwick, among others, Jennifer B. Camden examines the role of female characters who, while embodying the qualities associated with heroines, fail to achieve this status in the story. These "secondary heroines," often the friend or sister of the primary heroine, typically disappear from the action of the novel as the courtship plot progresses, only to return near the conclusion of the action with renewed demands on the reader's attention. Accounting for this persistent pattern, Camden suggests, reveals the cultural work performed by these unusual figures in the early history of the novel. Because she is often a far more vivid character than the heroine of the marriage plot, the secondary heroine inevitably engages the reader's interest in her plight. That the narrative apparently seeks to suppress her creates tension and points to the secondary heroine as a site of contested identity who represents an ideology of womanhood and nationhood at odds with the national ideals represented by the primary heroine, whom the reader is asked to embrace. In showing how the anxiety produced by these ideals is displaced onto the secondary heroine, Camden's study represents an important intervention into the ways in which early novels use character to further ideologies of race, class, sex, and gender.
Philosophical naturalism is taken to be the preferred and reigning epistemology and metaphysics that underwrites many ideas and knowledge claims. But what if we cannot know reality on that basis? What if the institution of science is threatened by its reliance on naturalism? R. Scott Smith argues in a fresh way that we cannot know reality on the basis of naturalism. Moreover, the "fact-value" split has failed to serve our interests of wanting to know reality. The author provocatively argues that since we can know reality, it must be due to a non-naturalistic ontology, best explained by the fact that human knowers are made and designed by God. The book offers fresh implications for the testing of religious truth-claims, science, ethics, education, and public policy. Consequently, naturalism and the fact-value split are shown to be false, and Christian theism is shown to be true.
Exploring the idea of luxury in relation to a series of neighbouring but distinct concepts including avarice, licentiousness, indulgence, vitality, abundance and waste, this study combines intellectual and cultural historical methods to trace discontinuities in the conceptual development of extravagance in seventeenth-century England. Scott traces how ‘luxury’ developed encompassing meanings that connect with eighteenth-century debates even as they oppose their so-called demoralizing thrust.
Focusing on the working-class experience of gentrification, this book re-examines the enduring relationship between class and the urban. Class is so clearly articulated in the urban, from the housing crisis to the London Riots to the evocation of housing estates as the emblem of ‘Broken Britain’. Gentrification is often presented to a moral and market antidote to such urban ills: deeply institutionalised as regeneration and targeted at areas which have suffered from disinvestment or are defined by ‘lack’. Gentrification is no longer a peripheral neighbourhood process: it is policy; it is widespread; it is everyday. Yet comparative to this depth and breadth, we know little about what it is like to live with gentrification at the everyday level. Sociological studies have focused on lifestyles of the middle classes and the working-class experience is either omitted or they are assumed to be victims. Hitherto, this is all that has been offered. This book engages with these issues and reconnects class and the urban through an ethnographically detailed analysis of a neighbourhood undergoing gentrification which historicises class formation, critiques policy processes and offers a new sociological insight into gentrification from the perspective of working-class residents. This ethnography of everyday working-class neighbourhood life in the UK serves to challenge denigrated depictions which are used to justify the use of gentrification-based restructuring. By exploring the relationship between urban processes and working-class communities via gentrification, it reveals the ‘hidden rewards’ as well as the ‘hidden injuries’ of class in post-industrial neighbourhoods. In doing so, it provides a comprehensive ‘sociology of gentrification’, revealing not only how gentrification leads to the displacement of the working class in physical terms but how it is actively used within urban policy to culturally displace the working-class subject and traditional ways of life in an attempt to create the neoliberal subject. It reveals the novel forms of displacement this causes and develops an original typology of displacement from this. The book also demonstrates that gentrification is not always a zero-sum game for working-class residents, who at times rework gentrification processes, on their own terms for their own gains.

This book discusses the utilization of biblical contemplative practice in facilitating neuroplasticity in adults who experience psychological disorders. It examines psychological disorder from four perspectives, these are: spiritual faculty, physiological faculty, psychological faculty, and relational faculty. These four faculties are the foundation of the mind. Having chaos or rigidity in any one faculty will lead to disintegration in the central nervous system, which inevitably leads to mental distress. This book demonstrates from scientific research how to use prayer and Biblical meditation to heal the brain from psychological distress, such as trauma, anxiety, depression, and addictions. In addition, the following areas are covered in the book: “The mind:God’s design”, “parent-child relationship and its impact on brain development”, “insecure attachment and how it affects the brain”, and “God, attachment and the brain”. It looks at how God changes the brain through the process of neuroplasticity.
An integral part of Infection Control Programme is good hospital hygiene. Surveillance which is the act of infection investigation using the CDC definitions provides data about the factors contributing to infection. HAI (Hospital acquired infection) are an important cause of morbidity and mortality which constitutes 10% of all hospital admissions worldwide. This has made even more imperative need for infection control in hospitals and nursing homes.[31] Important Hospital acquired infection includes CAUTI (Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection), CLABSI (Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection), VAP (Ventilator Associated Pneumonia) and SSI (Surgical Site Infection). Determining the presence of hospital acquired infection requires an infection control practitioner (ICP) to review a patient's chart and see if the patient had the signs and symptom of an infection

I have realised over the years that the Scriptures actually tells us a lot about Demons and devils, but that an intensive study of The Bible was nesecary to bring that particular knowledge to the front. I found through research other non-Biblical books that also refer to one and the same demons and devils we face. My aim was to write a comprehensive study guide to the world of demons/devils, what possible influence they have over us and importantly, how we can rid ourselves of these cursed beings so that we can live happy, spiritually fulfilled lives.I have managed to compile information I researched in such a way that it must make a difference in people's lives. After reading this book, one will be compelled to be more attentive towards certain things than before. One will also have a better understanding of God's plan with us and how we must live our lives.
Christians face relentless attacks from an ungodly culture, a formidable adversary, and our own fallen natures. Yet we cannot afford to surrender to these very real enemies. Just as survivalists use 10 specific strategies to overcome threatening situations, Courageous explains 10 biblical strategies for surviving--and thriving--in a world that is hostile to our faith. As A.W. Tozer said, "A scared world needs a fearless church." Courageous is a clarion call for Christians to boldly live out their faith. If you've felt your faith is under attack, if you're struggling with the temptation to follow the crowd despite biblical teaching to the contrary, or if you're just feeling weary, the 10 strategies in Courageous will provide fresh fire and new hope.
The journey to uncover the inner anxiety issues relating to the development of an unhealthy personal identity was resolved through this research project. The pastoral care ministry began to flow more effectively when the anxiety from my personal identity was resolved. My journey of discovery can be seen throughout the following six chapters. This research project is aimed to provide clergy and laypersons a tool of training to use in reducing anxiety in practicing pastoral care. This research is a result of over thirty years of interpathic training, having discussions with experts in pastoral care, including detailed feedback and discussions with clergy, laypersons, and professionals.
Painting Labour in Scotland and Europe, 1850-1900 sets out systematically to discuss the Scottish rural painting in relation to its particular Scottish historical context, both sociological and aesthetic and its English and European counterparts. Alongside canonical Scottish images by major figures such as James Guthrie, the book explores many under researched and unconsidered paintings by nineteenth century Scottish artists, and considers them in relation to major English and Continental Realist and Romantic painters. The juxtaposition of J.F. Millet with W.D. McKay, and Edwin Landseer with George Reid makes for a volume that will appeal both to an academic audience and to one interested in European art history more generally.
By most accounts, I have had a very successful career. I have been blessed with the opportunity to not only serve as a police officer, but also to lead our country’s largest police department. Beyond that, I remain the only law enforcement person to have ever served in the cabinet of the president. In addition, I have had a very rewarding career in academia as a professor, lecturer and department head. All of my accomplishments were surpassed when I was given the opportunity to serve as mayor of Houston, the fourth largest city in the United States.
Recent shifts in the contemporary cultural, political, and religious landscape are engendering intensive attention concerning political theology. New trends and traditional ideas equally colour these movements. Given that a medley of recent books and articles have exhaustively treated both the history and the current resurgence of political theology, we now find ourselves faced with the task of reinventing and redefining the future of political theology. This book presents a rich overview of fresh, contemporary theoretical approaches uniquely prioritizing the prospects of the future of political theology, but also making room for significant interventions from philosophy and political theory. Including prominent essays on Judaic, Islamic, Buddhist and Christian perspectives, this book balances elements from post-modern theology with more classical as well as anti-post-modern approaches.
This study argues against vague interpretations of fantasy as mere escapism and seeks to define it as a distinct kind of narrative. A general theoretical section introduces recent work on fantasy, notably Tzventan Todorov's The Fantastic: A Structural Approach to a Literary Genre (1973). Dr Jackson, however, extends Todorov's ideas to include aspects of psychoanalytical theory. Seeing fantasy as primarily an expression of unconscious drives, she stresses the importance of the writings of Freud and subsequent theorists when analysing recurrent themes, such as doubling or multiplying selves, mirror images, metamorphosis and bodily disintegration.^l Gothic fiction, classic Victorian fantasies, the 'fantastic realism' of Dickens and Dostoevsky, tales by Mary Shelley, James Hogg, E.T.A. Hoffmann, George Eliot, Henry James, Joseph Conrad, R.L. Stevenson, Franz Kafka, Mervyn Peake and Thomas Pynchon are among the texts covered. Through a reading of these frequently disquieting works, Dr Jackson moves towards a definition of fantasy expressing cultural unease. These issues are discussed in relation to a wide range of fantasies with varying images of desire and disenchantment.
Focusing on representations of women's literary celebrity in nineteenth-century biographies, autobiographical accounts, periodicals, and fiction, Brenda R. Weber examines the transatlantic cultural politics of visibility in relation to gender, sex, and the body. Looking both at discursive patterns and specific Anglo-American texts that foreground the figure of the successful woman writer, Weber argues that authors such as Elizabeth Gaskell, Fanny Fern, Mary Cholmondeley, Margaret Oliphant, Elizabeth Robins, Eliza Potter, and Elizabeth Keckley helped create an intelligible category of the famous writer that used celebrity as a leveraging tool for altering perceptions about femininity and female identity. Doing so, Weber demonstrates, involved an intricate gender/sex negotiation that had ramifications for what it meant to be public, professional, intelligent, and extraordinary. Weber's persuasive account elucidates how Gaskell's biography of Charlotte Brontë served simultaneously to support claims for Brontë's genius and to diminish Brontë's body in compensation for the magnitude of those claims, thus serving as a touchstone for later representations of women's literary genius and celebrity. Fanny Fern, for example, adapts Gaskell's maneuvers on behalf of Charlotte Brontë to portray the weak woman's body becoming strong as it is made visible through and celebrated within the literary marketplace. Throughout her study, Weber analyzes the complex codes connected to transatlantic formations of gender/sex, the body, and literary celebrity as women authors proactively resisted an intense backlash against their own success.

Trump 2020 is a book written supporting a non-political figure whom was elected to the nation's highest office, as President of the United States. With the change taking place and this change has ushered in a lot of pent up hatred, and a common strategy to remove this non-professional politician as the public has never seen before. Due to this outcry from the far left liberal party, the public is now seeing a Democratic party now bring out half truths and blatant fabricated stories in order to view the current President in unfavorable terms. As a lifelong supporter of our democracy and the capitalistic system; I am outraged and stunned by the weekly new events being published by the major media. As a common man, I have no friends or favors coming out of DC and I now wish to convey my thoughts from an ordinary American in viewing various segments of our economy. The books is reflective of my philosophy and personal thoughts on what is happening in American politics.
The causes of the climate change issue can be traced back to the Industrial Revolution. While there is an argument that global climate change does not actually exist and that global warming and cooling occur periodically within the Earth’s natural balance, prevailing scientific viewpoints assert that climate change is an immutable reality and will worsen in the coming years if no preventive measures are taken. Our study is based on the assumptions that global climate change exists and is human-induced. Climate change is a natural phenomenon that has always existed on Earth, occurring for millions of years. The long-term geological variations in the Earth’s climate represent natural climate change. However, in the last quarter of the 20th century, particularly with the increasing industrialization, the climate change that has occurred is artificial and anthropogenic in nature (Çepel, 2003: 125-145). According to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) definition, climate change refers to a modification in the climate that can be observed over comparable time intervals1 and is a consequence of human activities that directly or indirectly alter the composition of the global atmosphere, in addition to natural climate variations (IPCC, 2001: 13). Based on conducted studies, it has been observed that the global average temperature of the Earth has increased by 0,6ºC in the past century. It is projected that from the year 1990 to 2100, the global average temperature of the Earth will increase by an estimated range of 1.4 to 5.8ºC. However, one should not be misled by these seemingly small temperature increases. A 1ºC increase in surface temperature can result in significant changes on Earth. When we consider the ongoing impacts of climate change within the context of sustainable development, it becomes evident that it could lead to severe catastrophes in the future (Karakaya & Özçağ, 2003: 2). The primary cause of climate change is the substantial increase in emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere as a result of human activities, particularly due to industrialization. There are six major greenhouse gases responsible for global climate change. These include Carbon Dioxide (CO₂), Methane (CH₄), Nitrous Oxide (N₂O), Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), Perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF₆). Among these gases, CO₂ is the most significant, accounting for approximately 80% of the total greenhouse gas emissions. CO₂ emissions result from the combustion of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas, which are used in various sectors of the economy. The CO₂ emissions solely attributable to fossil fuel consumption worldwide exceeded twice their 1973 levels by the end of 2019, rising from 15,461 million tons (Mt) to 33,622 Mt. Of this emission quantity, 44% originates from coal consumption, 33.7% from petroleum consumption, 21.6% from natural gas consumption, and 0.7% from industrial and non-renewable waste sources. When examined by regions, as of the end of 2019, 33.6% of CO₂ emissions are attributed to OECD countries, 29.5% to China, 13.6% to non-OECD Asia except China, 7.6% to non-OECD Europe and Eurasia, 5.2% to the Middle East, 3.8% to Africa, and 2.8% to non-OECD Americas countries (IEA, 2021: 54-55). The natural disasters arising as a consequence of global climate change, such as droughts, glacier melting, rising sea levels, flood disasters, hurricanes, and the imminent threat of extinction for certain species, pose substantial risks on a global scale, particularly in terms of the economic and social contexts, including agriculture, industry, and tourism sectors. The agriculture sector and food security are the domains that will be most severely affected by the issue of climate change globally. Food security is defined as taking measures by adhering to the necessary health regulations in the production, processing, storage, transportation, and distribution stages of food production to ensure the production of healthy food. Additionally, it refers to food that is safe, hygienic, beneficial to human health, and maintains its health status (Ceyhun Sezgin, 2020: 175). Nevertheless, there are various socio-economic and technological developments, urbanization, land use in agriculture, and global trade, among other factors, which affect food security on a global scale. Climate change and its associated impacts contribute to changes in nature, consequently increasing or altering the factors that affect food security. Factors affecting food security can emerge at any point along the food supply chain, and climate change can either trigger or directly cause such issues. Examples of factors influencing food security include fluctuations in temperature, extreme weather events, ocean and sea warming and acidification, as well as the development of resistance by bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi due to changes in temperature and rainfall patterns (Tirado, Clarke, Jaykus, McQuatters, & Frank, 2010). In the first chapter of this book, climate change, the factors contributing to this change and the effects of climate change on the world and our country have been examined. The second chapter discusses definitions related to food security, the global situation regarding food security and the factors influencing food security. The third chapter explores the impacts of climate change on food security. We hope that our study serves as a warning to the government, local authorities and food producers and also provides a valuable guide for students and colleagues in their academic endeavors. We would like to express our gratitude to the Hiperlink Publishing team and the Editor-in-Chief, Ms. Hatice BAHTİYAR, for their valuable support during the preparation and printing process of our book.

YAHWEH (The LORD God) and His Son YAHSHUAH (Jesus Christ) made statements with regard to Eschatology that have been “Spiritualized” for over a Millennium, which has led to the belief in Universalism, the belief that YAHSHUAH died for EVERYONE. Well, after one studies the original languages of the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, the message of the Kingdom of God was preached to and accepted by a certain House in the Bible. The other House rejected this message, and YAHSHUAH punished that House by taking the Kingdom away from them and giving It to another nation bringing forth fruit. There are only the House of Israel, the House of Judah, and the House of David, mentioned in the Bible. All three existed then, as they do today. However, most of today’s Babylonian Priesthood/Churchianity refuses to accept the secular historical position with regard to the House of Israel, and who they are today. The people groups, which YAHWEH and YAHSHUAH addressed, still exist today. However, these people are all mixed-up, and known by different names, but they DO exist. This book goes back to the origin of these people groups in the Bible, and brings them forward to the present using their old names, in order to understand Eschatology. This brings us to the major question of, “Is the Bible only about Israel?” And, if so, how does it affect our Eschatology today? This book answers these hard questions...
