R.K. Narayan is a writer whose stories have enamoured my soul whether it was the rendition of stories on the audio visual medium or the books that filled my hands and mind with treasures of common and mystical. These stories are created in the simple yet magical world of Malgudi which has a wealth of peculiar characters straight out of a town or village in India; these common folk and their idiosyncrasies amuse and connect us with them in an incomprehensible way. We can analyse ourselves and our imperfections through reading their stories. These stories are a mirror to human frailties, thus, inspiring us to live rather than always trying to become better version of ourselves. Ambition, glamour, development, technology, competition, to grow big and do big is what has never touched Narayan stories…his characters live unperturbed in simple villages, simply enjoying every morsel and every conversation that comes their way. Indian myths and folklore form the bedrock of his stories. Simply told yet holding didactic messages through symbolic connect to mythology and Vedic and Puranic texts. A Narayan story is a sneak peek into the unpretentious common folk and their life and ambitions; wish the writer was presenting another story to us where how social media and digitization affects the amusing world of Malgudi would have been a treat to read! This book is an endeavour from my side to write about the contribution of Narayan to Indian English Literature and attempting a commentary upon some of his remarkable works

Healthcare is a fragmented service with high variance in quality from hospital to hospital and physician to physician. Often, poor management of hospitals contributes to undesired outcomes. The ‘clinical silos’ from where services are delivered lacks an integrated approach to converge all related specialists around the patient. Patient satisfaction is never a unit of measurement of effectiveness in hospitals. Patients are not routinely engaged in decision making and often communication with relatives is established on the eve of a catastrophic event, either convince them to plead their helplessness. This book reveals the internal performance dimensions that are crucial to improve clinical outcomes. The performance enabling framework is an innovative model for any hospital to adapt. The book brings out with clarity what constitutes ‘value’ in the patients’ perspective. The book convincingly argues that appropriate treatment, which is non-negotiable combined with affordability and patient satisfaction are the three dimensions that will create value in healthcare services.
The current status of fossil fuel and alternative energy is a hot topic of today. Many different sides have many different opinions on the transition strategy that will work best as fossil fuel reserves slowly diminish. Seeing the light at the end of the tunnel for fossil fuels allows us to begin envisioning the role of various alternative fuels to replace these energy sources. Hydrogen fits into this transition mostly by replacing oil in the transportation sector as the main energy carrier. Natural gas and biofuels seem to be the best short-term solution, but after 2050, hydrogen transportation must become the norm as we move into a sustainable energy sector by 2100. Fuel-cell vehicles will be able to run off hydrogen more efficiently and be far cleaner than conventional gas-powered vehicles. As production of fossil fuels slows and proven reserves fall, prices will rise and alternative sources will become economically competitive with fossil fuels. Nuclear, geothermal, wind, PV, and wave energy will all be needed to provide for the total global energy demands. A hydrogen platform will also be developed through this century for the transportation sector. Hydrogen will serve as an energy carrier for vehicles and will be used as a form of chemical storage for energy in stationary applications, produced most likely by off-peak excess power. Based on the above information, all countries in the world can be analyzed to assess their potential to become early adopters for hydrogen energy. Even though a basic statistical approach might not provide very accurate results, it provides an insight on early adopters and the status of countries in terms of several commonly measured properties.

The Peoples Republic of China (PRC) diplomatic engagement with the Middle East spans multiple dimensions, including trade and investment, the energy sector, and military cooperation. Connecting China through the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean and Europe, the Middle East is a unique geostrategic location for Beijing, a critical source of energy resources, and an area of expanding economic ties. The Middle East geographical and political area is subject to different country inclusion interpretations that have changed over time and reflect complex and multifaceted circumstances involving conflict, religion, ethnicity, and language. China considers most Arab League member countries (as well as Israel, Turkey, and Iran) as representing the Middle East. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and official Chinese publications refer to this region as Xiya beifei (West Asia and North Africa). China sees the Middle East as an intrinsic part of its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and has ramped up investment in the region accordingly, focusing on energy (including nuclear power), infrastructure construction, agriculture, and finance. This book uses the BRI as a framework for analyzing ChinaMiddle East relations, with special emphasis on the PRCs strategic partnerships via regional mutual interdependency in various sectors such as energy, infrastructure building, political ties, trade and investment, financial integration, people to people bonding, and defense. A stable Middle East region is vital for Chinas sustainable growth and continued prosperity. As the worlds largest oil consumer with an ambition to expand its economic and political influence, the Middle Easts geostrategic location and holder of most of the worlds known energy resources make it indispensable to the success of the Belt and Road Initiative.
In India, vehicle emission standards were implemented in 1991 for gasoline vehicles and in 1992 for diesel vehicles. Since 2000, Euro standards have been followed in India under the name Bharat Stage Emission Standards for four-wheeled vehicles. Since October 2010, Bharat Stage III norms have been implemented throughout India. Bharat Stage IV norms have been in effect in a few cities since April 2010. Bharat Stage IV is expected to be implemented throughout India by April 2017. It is already in use in 13 major cities. Upgrading the emission standards necessitates the upgrading of manufacturing companies' technology, which raises the cost of the vehicle. One of the main reasons for the slow upgrade of emission standards is cost. However, there are some who argue that the cost increase is offset by cost savings in health care because the pollutants that cause disease are reduced as emission standards are raised. Fuels are also important in meeting these emission standards. Fuel specifications have also been aligned with the corresponding European production norms.

The Indian journey to become a missile power was enabled by a team of dare devils at the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL). The book traces the origin and development of India’s missile related infrastructure and missiles till 1982 until Dr. Abdul Kalam arrived at the scene. The fascinating story has been narrated by the pioneers themselves and edited by Dr. Prahalada. The chapters contain descriptions of key infrastructure, key people, key programs like India’s first Anti-Tank Missile, the Devil program, the Valiant Program and genesis of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme – IGMDP. The pioneers also describe the management practices developed and implemented to manage the complex programmes at shoe string budgets. Dr Prahlada is popularly known for his role as the Project Director for Akash SAM missile system. He has also been Program Director for India’s SLBM K15, supersonic cruise missile Brahmos and has led the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP) as the Chairman of the Program Board. As the Director of DRDL he has initiated many new projects like Astra air to air missile system, Long Range Surface to air missile system for naval application, JV Project Brahmos Supersonic cruise missile system and hypersonic technology demonstrator. Since 1971 he has served in various ISRO and DRDO Establishments covering VSSC Trivandrum, ADE Bangalore and DRDL Hyderabad.
