Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) is widely regarded as North America's most influential theologian. Throughout the early decades of his ministry he engaged in a public and sustained debate with 'Arminian' theology, a crusade that contributed significantly to the events of the Great Awakening. This book investigates the contours and substance of this theological war. In establishing a clearer historical context for this polemic, McClenahan seeks to overturn the scholarly consensus that Edwards' own theology was a twisting of the Reformed tradition. By demonstrating that Edwards' interlocutor was the dead English Archbishop, John Tillotson, McClenahan provides the hermeneutical key for many of Edwards' most significant works. Justification by faith is one of the most contested doctrines in contemporary theology and Jonathan Edwards, referred to as America's Augustine, wrote extensively on this area. His is a voice that many people are keen to hear.
Legal scholars and authorities generally agree that the law should be obeyed and should apply equally to all those subject to it, without favour or discrimination. Yet it is possible to see that in any legal system there will be situations when strict application of the law will produce undesirable results, such as injustice or other consequences not intended by the law as framed. In such circumstances the law may be changed but there may be broad policy reasons not to do so. The allied concepts of dispensation and economy grew up in the western and eastern traditions of the Christian church as mechanisms whereby an individual or a class of people could, by authority, be excused from obligations under a particular law in particular circumstances without that law being changed. This book uncovers and explores this neglected area of church life and law. Will Adam argues that dispensing power and authority exist in various guises in the systems of different churches. Codified and understood in Roman Catholic and Orthodox canon law, this arouses suspicion in the Church of England and in English law in general. The book demonstrates that legal flexibility can be found in English law and is integral to the law of the Church, to enable the Church today better to fulfil its mission in the world.
Three decades of research into retailing in England from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries has established a seemingly clear narrative: fixed shops were widespread from an early date; 'modern' methods of retailing were common from at least the early eighteenth century; shopping was a skilled activity throughout the period; and consumers were increasingly part of - and aware of being part of - a polite and fashionable culture. All of this is true, but is it the only narrative? Research has shown that markets were still important well into the nineteenth century and small scale producer-retailers co-existed with modern warehouses. Many shops were not smart. The development of modern retailing therefore was a fractured and fragmented process. This book presents a reassessment of the standard view by challenging the usefulness of concepts like 'traditional' and 'modern', examining consumption and retailing as inextricably linked aspects of a single process, and by using the idea of narrative to discuss the roles and perceptions of the various actors in this process - such as retailers, shoppers/consumers, local authorities and commentators. The book is therefore structured around some of these competing narratives in order to provide a richer and more varied picture of consumption and retailing in provincial England.
This fresh exploration of the life, work and writing of Archbishop Pole, focuses particularly on Pole’s final years (1556-58) as Archbishop of Canterbury. Stressing the events and character of Pole's 'English' life, up to his exile in the 1530s, as well as in his final years in England, this book explores his close relationship with Henry VIII and Mary I. Portraying Pole as a crucial figure in the Catholic-Protestant division, this book details the attempt to restore Roman Catholicism as the 'national religion' of England and Wales by telling the life-story of the hinge figure in forging English religious and political identity for several centuries. The final section of this book draws together important and illuminating source material written by Pole during his years as Archbishop of Canterbury.
This is the first full-scale study of interactions between Italy's religious reform and English reformations, which were notoriously liable to pick up other people's ideas. The book is of fundamental importance for those whose work includes revisionist themes of ambiguity, opportunism and interdependence in sixteenth century religious change. Anne Overell adopts an inclusive approach, retaining within the group of Italian reformers those spirituali who left the church and those who remained within it, and exploring commitment to reform, whether 'humanist', 'protestant' or 'catholic'. In 1547, when the internationalist Archbishop Thomas Cranmer invited foreigners to foster a bolder reformation, the Italians Peter Martyr Vermigli and Bernardino Ochino were the first to arrive in England. The generosity with which they were received caused comment all over Europe: handsome travel expenses, prestigious jobs, congregations which included the great and the good. This was an entry con brio, but the book also casts new light on our understanding of Marian reformation, led by Cardinal Reginald Pole, English by birth but once prominent among Italy's spirituali. When Pole arrived to take his native country back to papal allegiance, he brought with him like-minded men and Italian reform continued to be woven into English history. As the tables turned again at the accession of Elizabeth I, there was further clamour to 'bring back Italians'. Yet Elizabethans had grown cautious and the book's later chapters analyse the reasons why, offering scholars a new perspective on tensions between national and international reformations. Exploring a nexus of contacts in England and in Italy, Anne Overell presents an intriguing connection, sealed by the sufferings of exile and always tempered by political constraints. Here, for the first time, Italian reform is shown as an enduring part of the Elect Nation's literature and myth.
This social and religious history of European Jews in the early modern period is unique in placing Jewish experience in the context of Christian society. Beginning with late medieval Jewry and the expulsion from Spain in 1492 of Jews who refused to convert to Christianity, John Edwards goes on to analyse the role of Jews during the Renaissance, the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation, and ends with the early development of religious toleration and the Enlightenment. He examines the complexity of personal and communal belief and practice, and also describes the social, political and economic experience of Jews and Christians, bringing together Christian and Jewish historiography in order to enrich our understanding of the social relations between the two.
This book, written by Dr. Everett E. Murdock, a college professor, tells the stories behind the story of every presidential election in U.S. history, with a special focus on the volatile 2016 election. Dr. Murdock is a widely-published novelist, a storyteller, and his stories about our presidential elections provide fascinating details about behind-the-scenes events that lead to one candidate becoming president and the other being relegated to the lonely halls of history. He explores, in depth, the complex Electoral College System by which we elect our presidents, and he describes the role that slavery played in how the Congress and the Electoral College were originally designed. In his last chapter, Professor Murdock provides a detailed description of the events that unfolded day-by-day in the volatile election of 2016 that pitted the first woman candidate, Hillary Clinton, against, Donald Trump, one of the most unusual candidates in U.S. history. The author provides real insight into what led to one of the most dramatic upsets in U.S. presidential election history, helping you to understand why, once again, the candidate that won the general election didn’t get to be president.
Occasionally, a great manuscript is written about someone great, and that great manuscript is A Race to the Finish Line, and that someone great is Barack Hussain Obama, the first African American to be elected president of the United States of America. Rose's work is a brilliant analysis of the struggles that Barrack Obama overcame to reach the Oval Office and as the commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces in the United States. The book is intellectually stimulating and insightful. It chronicles Obama's life from birth and examines the forces that shaped his life and made him the forty-fourth president of the United States. It explains how Obama defeated three renowned, admired, and experienced politicians--former first lady and Senator Hillary Clinton, former prisoner of war and Senator John McCain, and former Governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney--to become president of the United States. Rose's work presents fresh insights into Obama's life--from his birth in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 4, 1961, to Seattle and then Jakarta, Indonesia. The book is a definitive account of Barack Obama's formative years, which made him the man he became. After graduating from Punahou School, a private, elite all-white academy in Honolulu, the young Obama entered Occidental College in Los Angeles, California, and after two years, he transferred to Columbia University, an Ivy League college in New York City, and to Harvard University Law School, where he was elected as the first African American president of the prestigious Harvard Law Review. Dr. Rose's penetrating and captivating work describes Barack Obama's tumultuous upbringing as a young man of mixed race who was raised almost exclusively by his white grandparents, his marriage to Michelle Robinson in Chicago in 1992, and his work as a community organizer on the South Side of Chicago, an Illinois state senator from 1997 to 2004, and serving as a US senator from 2004 to 2008 when he was elected President of the United States. The book reveals that Occidental College has had a profound impact on Obama's life, because according to him, it was at Occidental College that he took life seriously and was awakened to the notion that he could make a difference in the world. Rose's epic work is a rich tapestry of a life little known or understood prior to his keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston, which instantly catapulted him into the national spotlight. The book is a classic narrative drawn from hundreds of interviews, including several of President Obama's advisers, friends, and classmates and a trove of articles, journals, and other documents. It tells the human story of a man--Barack Hussain Obama--who changed the course of history and the world in a way that no one else can and no one expected. As a result, he is considered one of the most significant figures of the twenty-first century. It is a groundbreaking and multigenerational manuscript; a richly textured account of President Obama's life from childhood to adulthood as he tried to make sense of his past, established his own identity as he prepared for his political future. It is a beautifully written and powerful book that captured Barack Obama's time as a community organizer in one of Chicago City's roughest neighborhoods as he grappled with the role that faith has in store for him. It is a fascinating account about a young man born into uncommon family and perhaps unusual circumstances--son of a black man from Kenya, Africa, and a white woman from the state of Kansas in the United States. It is a first-rate account of the human struggles of one of the most interesting and exciting presidents of our time, Barack Hussain Obama.

#1 WALL STREET JOURNAL BESTSELLER #1 international resilience expert Dr. Taryn Marie Stejskal provides practical tools to effectively address challenges, complexity, and change. Resilience is categorically misunderstood. It’s not merely about bouncing back, and it’s so much more than returning to where you began. True resilient “doing” allows us to capitalize on the inescapable challenges of life and become better than we were before. Dr. Taryn Marie Stejskal began working with brain injury patients and found that most popular beliefs about human resilience are incorrect. Since then, for the last 20 years, she has conducted qualitative research on the power of resilience, studying the science behind why some people succeed while others fail. Here, Dr. Taryn Marie outlines the five critical behaviors that define successful resilience: Vulnerability, Productive Perseverance, Connection, Gratiosity (Gratitude and Generosity), and Possibility. Resilient People bounce forward, take an active approach to facing challenges, and most importantly, they are made, not born. Dr. Taryn Marie’s empirically proven framework shows us how to develop resilience practices in our own lives—as adults, as parents, and across organizations—in a manner that allows us to be enhanced by our experiences, not diminished.
In 2042, the United States is projected to be no longer a predominantly white nation. What we must do in the interim is to have a dialogue with one another and learn to live with one another, somewhere between black and white. If we do not learn to live in peace, we only have to look at the past of the Balkans, Rwanda, Sudan, etc., as well as present-day Nigeria, Iraq, Syria, etc. Between Black and White is my personal journey and attempt to reconcile my past with the present. Ever hopeful for the future. Not just for myself, but my grandchild. Give peace a chance The choice is ours. RIP Trayvon Martin Oscar Grant Michael Brown Eric Garner
This work explains the underfunding of early insurance and annuity schemes, and proposes a new view of how actuarial science developed as a discipline.

Onkere: An African Boy’s Story of Struggle, Resilience, and Determination discusses how a young French-speaking African boy from a low-income family named Onkere came to fall in love with the English language and American culture as a whole and how regardless of the incredible setbacks thrown at him to prevent him from realizing his objective, he never gave up on his dream. The book further explores the trouble he went through from Africa to get a scholarship and go to France to pursue his studies. Once in France, as an international student, he overcame special requirements to be allowed to be part of an exchange program to go to America and improve his knowledge of the English language. Once in America, he had to overcome cultural misunderstandings to survive. In the midst of all these twists and turns, the main character ends up holding a doctorate in the field of English and American studies, getting married, having children, becoming an important personality not only for his country but also for the entire world, and working at the United Nations.
The late twentieth century witnessed a shift in the thinking and teaching of theologians on how to "rightly divide the word of truth (II Tim. 2:15)". This trend is continuing in the twenty-first century and is now being strenuously promoted by those who vehemently oppose traditional dispensational teaching. The greatest challenges to traditional Dispensational Theology in this present hour come from those who espouse the teachings of Reformed Covenant Theology and what has become known as Progressive Dispensationalism. The problem stems from the fact that there are some misconceptions about dispensational teaching that need to be addressed and some weaknesses concerning opposing viewpoints that need to be exposed. This challenge is not being vigorously confronted in the present hour because of the popularity and prominence of those who espouse these theologically divergent systems and the reluctance of the proponents of dispensationalism to be labeled as divisive or fanatic.

More Than a Speech a Struggle—How the Constitution and Christianity Were Used as Liberation Tools for Change: a Critical Analysis of Three Selective Speeches of Frederick Douglass, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Senator Barack Obama
This book was written based on Betty Knights ability to balance and critically analyze three of these orators speeches made during three different eras of American history. Her insights allow readers to see what I saw immediately after speaking with on her on many occasions: her unique way of interpreting the past, present, and the future. The deposit that Knight has made to her readers lives will demonstrate that she is not among the many but among the few; for many are called, but few are chosen. After reading her other book W.H.O.L.E., I realized that Betty Knight had something to say to the class of 2010 and her colleagues in the ministry. So I asked her to be the keynote speaker at her own graduation in Chicago, Illinois on September 11, 2010. She agreed. Her keynote address was entitled If you can wait your time, you will have your turn. Knight has received her Doctorate of Philosophy in Ministry. After reading her thesis, I truly understand why God has equipped her to have an impact on her audience as well as keep it present throughout this experience. In this book, Knight addresses how Christianity and the United States Constitution stand somewhat at odds with each other while sometimes forming a bond, those of creative mind and genius that make it possible for them to deal together with key problems of American history. Knights writing brings this theme center stage, including the many contradictions within Christianity as a religious institution and interpretations of its sacred text, the Bible, from which, a way of life was drawn by those who attempted to understand and practice Christianity within Western culture. This book enables the reader to understand when and how to reconcile these contradictions. In addition, the book identifies basic essentials for life, its governance, and its survival all to be viewed from the perspective of numerous identifying principles that have caused alienation within American life. When you finish reading this book you will completely understand why God called these African Americans orators Douglass, King, and Obama center stage.
Thirty Years Among the Dead, first published in 1924, details Swedish-American GP and psychiatrist Carl Wickland’s experiences as a psychical researcher. After moving to California in 1918, Wickland began to turn away from conventional medical psychology and moved toward the belief that psychiatric illnesses were the result of influence by spirits of the dead. He came to believe that a large number of his patients had become possessed by what he called "obsessing spirits", and that low-voltage electric shocks could dislodge them. His wife Anna acted as a medium to guide them to "progress in the spirit world". Spiritualists considered him an authority on "destructive spirits", prompting Wickland to write this book.

The 2004 US election provided French citizens and their media with a springboard for re-conceiving 'self' and 'other'. Given its prominent opposition to recent US foreign policy such as the invasion of Iraq, a volley of insults and caustic remarks reverberated between France and the US. French observers linked the Bush administration's policies to particular groups and regions within the US, to a democratic deficit, to a perceived threat of US collapse and to the need for a stronger Europe. By examining how the French media – newspapers, television, the internet and scholarly research – represented the election from a critical geopolitical perspective, this book provides the first major in-depth study of views of the US in contemporary foreign media.

He or she betrayed the sacred vows and commitment you made on your wedding day, before witness and God only to leave you to suffer through the sickening whirlwind of anger, grief, anxiety, and, perhaps worst of all, your shattered sense of sense of self-esteem due to being caught up in the boogie woogie. You are terrified! Period! You feel hopeless; as there is no way you will ever be able to get past the horror and put the pieces of your devastated marriage or relationship back together again ... But it happened. You will get over it. Even the best in our society goes through the hurt and boogie woogie. Boogie Woogie II will share the pain, healing, laughter, and awareness of those perhaps caught up and those that were smart enough to heal and move on. But in order to defeat the boogie woogie the following notions must be accepted and understood: betrayal, being vengeful, feeling guilt, being in a state of fear, carrying around anger, feeling frustrated, and paranoid feelings, and disappointment (not necessarily in these order).

The nation's premier communications expert shares his wisdom on how the words we choose can change the course of business, of politics, and of life in this country In Words That Work, Luntz offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the tactical use of words and phrases affects what we buy, who we vote for, and even what we believe in. Nobody is in a better position to explain than Frank Luntz: He has used his knowledge of words to help more than two dozen Fortune 500 companies grow. Hell tell us why Rupert Murdoch's six-billion-dollar decision to buy DirectTV was smart because satellite was more cutting edge than "digital cable," and why pharmaceutical companies transitioned their message from "treatment" to "prevention" and "wellness." If you ever wanted to learn how to talk your way out of a traffic ticket or talk your way into a raise, this book's for you.
This book was developed to compare the real life educational experiences of an average child during the last generation in which the United States led the world in education to a real child's experiences today (when the United States is no longer in the top 20). The practice of labeling students with a disability has reached the status of a dangerous standard practice. Increasing demands for educational accountability will lead to more students being labeled and left behind. Written from a unique in-depth child's point-of-view, this book is designed to trigger a paradigm shift from automatically labeling children to patiently allowing them to grow into themselves. The author compares common disabilities chapter-by-chapter in sync with the child's intentions (or lack thereof). This sharing of the educational lives of two children, coupled with peer reviewed literature and research, provides powerful motivation for change.
How to Scripturally and Theologically Justify Christian Halloween Haunted Houses and Other Evangelistic Events for Christian Fellowship, Fun, and Prophet.
How to Scripturally and Theologically Justify Christian Halloween Haunted Houses and Other Evangelistic Events for Christian Fellowship, Fun, and Prophet.
Halloween has been referred to as the Devils holiday, but all 365 1/4 days were created by and belong to Jesus. If Satan usurps even one day it is our Christian duty and responsibility to reclaim and redeem it in the name of our Lord. Are the imaginary ghouls and goblins of Halloween any more wicked than the jolly elf called Santa Claus, or the Easter bunny? Should the Church stop celebrating these holy days, the bookends of our faith, as well? Instead of battling the spiritual enemy on Halloween, the Church is guilty of crossing swords with one another. We fight among ourselves, not about how to celebrate Halloween, but whether it should even be observed. Jesus is more the reason for the season on Halloween than He is at Christmas. The Church must realize it is forfeiting Halloween as an opportunity to glorify the Prince of Peace, the One who has given us the victory over the prince of darkness and his evil minions. The Way, the Truth and the Life has conquered Death and the grave. By dressing up in costumes and portraying frightening creatures who at one time caused us to fear and tremble, we are not glorifying Satan. Rather, we are poking fun at the Serpent whose kingdom has been plundered by our Savior, and whose head has been crushed! Should we celebrate Halloween? The question is, How can we not? Halloween, Hallowed is Thy Name offers a believer confidence and joy in expressing the greeting Happy Halloween.
Manchester United is the most recognized sports team in the world, with an audience of millions around the globe, surpassing even the New York Yankees. David Beckham's exploits—and marital woes—are known worldwide. The Football Association of England has become a multi-billion dollar industry. But how did English football become not only the defining sport of the nation but also one of the most successful sports in the world? With The Leaguers, football historian Matthew Taylor tells the story of the early days of professional football in England, revealing the distant origins of today's game. Making extensive use of archival materials from football clubs, unions, and associations, Taylor presents a compelling picture of football teams and players in the early days of the twentieth century, tracing the development of the system of professional teams from the hundreds of town, club, and school teams that dotted the countryside. The top tier of those teams comprised the Football League that by the 1920s was synonymous with the very idea of professional football in the minds of fans and sportswriters alike. The Leaguers illuminates the role played by the Football League—and by successful clubs in the League such as Arsenal and Aston Villa—as the rules, standards, and structure of the modern game were being codified. Taylor also considers the careers and influences of early players, including such well-known names as Billy Meredith, "Dixie" Dean, and Alex James. As football's popularity grew and sports media proliferated, players found themselves becoming national stars, their portraits on cigarette cards bought by fans throughout England. The first full-length history of the early days of the Football League, The Leaguers will be essential reading for football fans who want to know how their favorite sport grew from modest origins to the worldwide phenomenon that is English football today.

Cardinal Giovanni Morone (1509–80) remains one of the most intriguing characters in the history of the sixteenth century Catholic Church – with neither his contemporaries nor subsequent scholars being able to agree on his motivations, theology or his legacy. Appointed Bishop of Modena in 1529 and created Cardinal in 1542 by Pope Paul III, his glittering career appeared to be in ruins following his arrest in 1557 on charges of heresy. Yet, despite spending more than two years imprisoned in Castel Sant' Angelo, he managed to resurrect his career and in 1563 was appointed principal legate to the Council of Trent, whereupon he resolved the difficulties besetting the council, which had brought it to a virtual standstill, and guided it to a successful conclusion. Concentrating largely – but by no means exclusively – upon the period of the pontificate of Pius IV (1559–65) and an evaluation of Morone's role as presiding legate at the Council of Trent, this book tackles a number of issues that have exercised scholars. How does Morone's activity at Trent in 1563 now look in the light of the information available in connection with his processo? What was the result of the wider activity of Morone and the spirituali during Pius' pontificate? How did Morone's career progress after Trent, with regards his actions as a diocesan in the immediate post-conciliar situation and his renewed difficulties in the pontificate of Pius V? Through a re-reading of important archival material and a re-examination of the wealth of recently published primary sources, this study revisits these key questions, and analyses the fluctuating fortunes of Morone's career as bishop, diplomat, heretic and cardinal legate.

The Goodness and Severity of God succinctly portrays these two aspects of God’s character and provides an excellent guide for attaining God’s goodness and being spared from His severity. With the love of so many growing cold and deception abounding, it is vital that we be able to determine our standing on God’s pathway of holiness, so that like Daniel, our life would be approved of the Lord and we would stand in our appointed place in heaven for all eternity.
