My purpose is to unveil the relation between poetic transcriptions and qualitative research. This process is how we make sense of ourselves and, perhaps, is a doorway toward understanding the other. Poetic transcriptions require being prepared for the other to speak to us, thus treating the other as equals to be met, not objects to be inspected, tolerated, or unseen. As I endeavored to examine their meanings and truths, my poetic transcriptions are about the deferred dreams, silenced voices, and hidden faces of four African American men. My poetic transcriptions are dialogues about authentic blackness and about what is or what ought to be.

The purpose of my qualitative research is to reveal how four African- American men overcame inferior education and Jim Crow laws. In the early twentieth century the social and economic conditions of African American men were appalling, yet they refused to accept the notion of inferior beings and second-class citizenship. Phenomenological interviews were conducted. The major conclusions that evolved from the data were that family and church were significantly important to the participants. This is a study about four African American mens pedagogy, praxis and their quest for discovery, self-realization and high expectations. My inquiry is also about their struggles, dreams, failures and disillusionment.

All traces of Captain Caldwells Potawatomi settlement and the Mormon safe haven of Kanesville were gone from the Indian Creek hollow by 1900, when Council Bluffs already seemed a 20th-century city of bright lights, steam, and smokestacks. The old western trails and steamboats disappeared as the city on the east bank of the Missouri River opposite Omaha became a major American railroad center and the industrial and commercial hub of southwest Iowa. Vineyards and orchards surrounded a growing city, with more acres under glass for greenhouses than anywhere else in the country and a daily stop for the Zephyr, Hiawatha, Rocket, Challenger, and other streamlined passenger trains. The West End was filled in, and new neighborhoods like Danetown and Little Vienna grew with new immigrants. All of the people of Council Bluffs faced fires, floods, and tornados as the Blue Denim City, where Americas mail was sorted survived economic upheaval, urban renewal, and eventual resurgence in the last decade of the century.

Perhaps the greatest human understanding lies within the hearts and souls of Black people. The old Negro folk songs entered the African American church and became prayer songs and sorrow songs that still trouble our souls. These songs were spirituals groans and mournful meanings that are ever present in the old Negro spirituals; they were narratives and expressions of hope and of tragedy. The songs we hear were a prophecy of pride and self-respect. Through all of the unhappiness of the sorrow songs, there breathes a hope and a faith in the final justice of things. The minor cadences of despair change often to victory and calm confidence. Sometimes it is faith in life, sometimes a faith in death, and sometimes reassurance of boundless justice in some unknown world beyond. But whichever it is, the meaning is always clear: that sometime, somewhere, all men will be judge by their souls and not by the color of their skins. Perhaps, in America, many Black men cannot endure their life-world of Blackness. Nevertheless, there will come a time when individuals will be required to accept full accountability for their cruelty, hypocrisy, exploitation, and for empowering a reality of Whiteness. It will be a time when secrets of the hearts will be known.

The Life of JAM is the story of the life of Dr. James A. Mandel PE. He was born on Christmas day in 1934 in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. His parents Isadore and Jennie Mandel guided his early years. He learned to swim at age 7. Jim earned a BS in Civil Engineering at Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1956. In the summer between his junior and senior years, he worked for the Bureau of Ships in Washington DC. From 1956 to 1961, except for six months in the army, he worked for Richardson, Gordon, and Associates. He designed many highway and railroad bridges. In 1959 he married Rita J Mandel. Rita was the interior designer for the Veterans Hospital. They had two children, Belinda and Bob. In 1962, Jim received a MS in Civil Engineering from Carnegie Institute of Technology. From 1962 to 1964, he worked for Goodyear Aerospace Corporation in Akron, Ohio. He was in charge of the structural design and wind tunnel testing of the Gemini Ballute. In 1967, he received a PhD in Civil Engineering at Syracuse University. From 1967 to 2008, he was a professor at Syracuse University. Rita died from breast cancer 1991. Jim married Carolyn Lisi on June 26, 1998.

About sixty miles north of Houston on Interstate 45, a giant statue soars above the piney woods of East Texas. Its a white concrete image of General Sam Houston, the first and third president of the Republic of Texas. Like everything in this state, it is oversized, and at seventy feet tall, its the largest statue of an American hero in the country. The statue welcomes the traveler to Huntsvillea small sleepy college town that was the home of Sam Houston, and which now is the home of Sam Houston State University (SHSU) and another Texas icon, the Texas Department of Corrections (TDC). On one side of its wall, convicts struggle with the rigors of prison life, and on the other at the university, another group of youths struggle with the demands of college. The contrast between the two serves as a metaphor for modern American life. This story is seen from the point of view of a man who experienced events on both sides of the prison wall. On one side of the wall, Randy White was a guardknown as Boss White to the inmates. On the other side was Randy White, a college student in 1972 and the Bearkats (the SHSU basketball team) official statistician. He was part of the story when the Bearkats became a basketball legend in the early seventies. Football is the renowned culture of Texas. If one has any doubts, then look at the Dallas Cowboys and the popularity of its cheerleading. Now there are cheerleading squads in the NFL as well as on the college football scene. There is nothing new or unique about that. But none are as famous as the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. To make the squad and wear the white short shorts and blue-and-white bolero jackets today is more prestigious than making the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes back in the forties. Such is the stature of football in Texas. So Texas is definitely football country. Basketball lives in the outskirts, something to be played in between football seasons. Sam Houston State Universitys basketball team had been lackluster for forty years. Nobody expected much from SHSU basketball in 1972, until the early seventies, back when a bunch of basketball players, intent on winning, burst on the scene like a perfect storm. Such is the one that brewed up one October day off New England, and it came out of nowhere. A confluence of different weather-related phenomena had combined to produce what was termed a perfect storm. That same perfect storm hit Huntsville. It was as if someone had put into a cauldron a unique combination of talent, coaching, spirit, camaraderie, and a new social awareness and mixed them upand out came a dream team, a dream season, a perfect storm. This is the story of that perfect storm, that dream season.

In all industrialised countries, closed head injuries are responsible for vast numbers of hospital admissions and days of work lost. For instance, about 120,000 patients are admitted to hospital in the United Kingdom each year with a diagnosis that reflects closed head injury. Such injuries are a major cause of deaths following accidents, especially those that involve children and young people, and they are also a major cause of handicap and morbidity among the survivors. This clinical condition is intrinsically a neurological one, but its proper evaluation demands an understanding of the associated psychology and psychopathology. At the same time, a major neurological condition with such a high level of incidence ought to be extremely informative about the functioning of the human brain and hence provide a major focus for neuropsychological investigation. In this book, the author seeks to integrate these two different perspectives by reviewing the clinical and neuropsychological aspects of closed head injury in a manner that is equally intelligible to researchers interested in the effects of brain damage upon human behaviour and to practitioners who are responsible for the assessment, management and rehabilitation of head-injured patients. This is the second edition of a book which was first published in 1990, and which has been extensively revised in the light of the subsequent research in the field. The book begins by considering the epidemiology, causes and structural neuropathology of closed head injury. It then considers the impact of closed head injury on memory, cognition, language, communication, personality and social behaviour. Finally it outlines the outcome, the mechanisms of recovery and the prospects for rehabilitation.

At the age of twelve, she became a believer in Jesus Christ and baptized in Aberdeen, NC, by her father, the late Reverend T. J. Johnson. About the Forword Corrie J. Davis-Jackson, M.S.A., (Steve), is the sister to Mary and one of fifteen siblings in which seven have preceded them (four at birth). She too is a Marlboro County (Hebron), South Carolina native. Her degreed educational experience includes: Longwood University, VA M.S.A. (’90); St. Paul’s College, VA B.A. (’71) and Clinton Junior College, SC AAD (’66). She is member of several professional organizations, teacher and administrator retiree of the Prince Edward County Public School System, VA (37 years) and presently owns the Davis Driving School founded by her and her late husband (Rev. Albert Davis, M.S.A.), also a teacher and principal administrator retiree of Prince Edward County Schools (VA). Mrs. Davis-Jackson is extremely active in her church (First Baptist) and Farmville, VA community. At the age of twelve, she became a believer in Jesus Christ and baptized by the family’s minister (the late Rev. G.W. Ware), then pastor of St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church in Hebron, South Carolina.

The open mic’s cultural antecedents include a radio format, folk hootenannies, and the jazz jam session. Drawing from multiple qualitative methods, Aldredge describes how open mics have etched a vital organizational place in the western and urban musical landscape. Open mics represent a creative place where the boundaries of practicing and performing seemingly blur. This allows for a range of social settings from more competitive, stratified, and homogenous music scenes to culturally diverse weekly events often stretching late into the night.
