This book is among the first to use a "media events" framework to examine China's Internet activism and politics, and the first study of the transformation of China's media events through the parameter of online activism. The author locates the practices of major modes of online activism in China (shanzhai [culture jamming]; citizen journalism; and weiguan [mediated mobilisation]) into different types of Chinese media events (ritual celebration, natural disaster, political scandal). The contextualised analysis of online activism thus enables exploration of the spatial, temporal and relational dimensions of Chinese online activism with other social agents -- such as the Party-state, mainstream media and civil society. Analysis reveals Internet politics in China on three interrelated levels: the individual, the discursive and the institutional. Contemporary cases, rich in empirical research data and interdisciplinary theory, demonstrate that the alternative and activist use of the Internet has intervened into and transformed conventional Chinese media events in various types of agents, their agendas and performances, and the subsequent and corresponding political impact. The Party-market controlled Chinese media events have become more open, contentious and deliberative in the Web 2.0 era due to the active participation of ordinary Chinese people aided by the Internet.
Meet the doctors, scientists, patients and campaigners tackling the world’s worst diseases We often hear about the dark side of the pharmaceutical industry – from extortionate pricing to the opioid epidemic. But there’s another story to be told. Through the story of eight revolutionary treatments, Dr William Pao cuts to the innovative heart of medical science and celebrates the tireless work of those fighting for better care. Behind each of these medicines – whether a potentially life-saving new treatment for cancer, or something as commonplace as paracetamol – there stands a cast of characters and a wealth of stories. The trajectory from the laboratory to the local chemist is rarely a straight line. Eureka moments are few are far between. Drug hunting demands leaps of imagination and lateral thinking, the accumulation of the knowledge and expertise of many, and – nearly always – a hefty dollop of luck. Breakthrough documents these journeys and grants a privileged look at the stories behind the medicines that improve – and very often save – our lives.
China’s development momentum will last for 200 more years. This book focused on China’s Economic System Reform and Opening-up to the Outside World, and answered the why, when, who, where, and how? The author used his observation and analysis to break down the Reform step by step. The story started from China’s national situation, followed by the kick-off, the operation, the policy, the little-known side of the senior decision-making process, and the organizational behaviors of the Communist Party of China. The Destiny of Chinese Nation and the development strategy are the unique achievements in China Studies. In 2009, the author presided over the program “The Planning of Economic and Cultural Industries Development of Xuanwu District, Beijing, 2009–2015.” He anticipated that the population of the Beijing metropolitan area shall be 70–100 million, and pointed out the necessity to build one more international airport in South Beijing. He also concluded the program “World Metropolis, Humanistic Beijing, and the Planning of the Cultural Finance during 2010–2015” by the same inferences. In 2014, the construction of Xiong An New District began. The Beijing Economic Circle has brought the prediction of 100-million population close to reality. On September 25, 2019, Beijing Da Xing International Airport was officially opened to traffic.
