Beyond physical superiority, mental stamina, and smart play, most of the world’s best athletes possess another specific advantage that gives them an edge. We’re not talking about performance-enhancing drugs or blood doping, but something a lot more natural—good vision. Being able to follow a fastball as it flies over home plate, judge the shooting distance to a basketball hoop, or leap in the air to catch that spiraling football at just the right moment all depend on good eyesight. And maximizing one’s vision can make all the difference between a good player and a great one. While wearing corrective lenses is certainly one way to sharpen visual acuity, it isn’t the only one. In his new book, High Performance Vision, sports-vision specialist Dr. Donald Teig, shares his highly successful approach to visual enhancement. During his work with professional athletes over the past forty years, Dr. Teig developed a series of visual and visual-motor performance tests to determine the strengths and weaknesses of their eyesight. After establishing an initial baseline of test results, the athletes were given specific exercises designed to improve their visual skills. He then tested them again and measured the results against the baseline. With each succession of exercises, their sight and motor coordination improved, as did their performance on the playing field. In High Performance Vision, Dr. Teig details his unique approach and offers his highly effective exercise regimen for improving your own vision. If you’ve been looking for safe, natural way to improve your game, High Performance Vision offers the perfect solution. In a clear and reader-friendly style, it shows you how to gain the edge that many pros have used for years.
Isaiah Vorys and his relatives are part of the largest Dutch group within the modern USA; namely, the “Van Voorhees” family. In 1660 C.E., Isaiah’s ancestral grandfather, Steven Coerts Van Voorhees, migrated from the Province of Drenthe, Netherlands to the Flatlands area of Brooklyn, Long Island, NY. Thus began the “roots” of a huge family who quickly branched out to become pioneers, early settlers, and prominent citizens within many U.S. States, Counties, and Cities from 1660 C.E. to present day. This book concentrates primarily on the one branch of Steven Coerts Van Voorhees’ descendants which leads to (and beyond) Isaiah Vorys, who was born in 1750 in Somerset County, New Jersey. At first glance, some of the heretofore unpublished genealogy charts associated with Isaiah may appear to be of sole interest to the readers who are related to him. However, any reader with a desire to learn more about United States History stands to gain insight into “the formation of the early USA”, by carefully reading each page of this book, because the author adds historical details associated with the “coast-to-coast” residential locations of Isaiah Vorys’ ancestors, descendants, and of his collateral relatives, beginning in 1660 C.E. and ending in 2013 C.E. Throughout an interesting 84 years of life, Isaiah Vorys actively participated in the betterment of his communities. For example, in 1776, he enlisted in a New Jersey Revolutionary War Regiment and participated in several battles as part of General George Washington’s “Continental Army” until 1781, even though Washington could not afford to pay this Regiment for their services. From 1808 to 1830, Isaiah Vorys was among the early pioneers who developed the City of Columbus, Ohio, while operating his “White Horse Tavern”. Even Isaiah’s death was interesting because the body exhumed from his gravesite in 1857 C. E. turned out not to be his remains! Isaiah Vorys’ seven children (adopting the VORYS, VORIS and VORHES surnames) were early settlers within various parts of western Pennsylvania, central Ohio, and in northern Indiana between 1784 C. E. and 1835 C.E. Isaiah’s descendants married spouses with surnames: HALLAM (early settlers of Washington Co., PA and of Clinton Co., OH); HITE; COCHENOUR; BIBLER (all three of these families were early settlers of Fairfield Co., OH); and MONROE (early settlers of Delaware Co., OH who descended from the MONROE/MUNROE “Minutemen” who fought in the “Battle of Lexington”, MA in 1775).
Christian pastoral care is a narrative, ecclesial, theological practice (NET). As a narrative practice, pastoral care attends to the inseparable interconnection between our own lifestories, others’ stories, the larger cultural stories, and God’s story. As a ministry of the church, pastoral care is an ecclesial practice that derives its motivation, purpose, and identity from the larger mission of the church to bear witness to and embody God’s mission of love that extends beyond the church for the transformation of the world. As a theological practice, pastoral care is grounded in God’s love story. God’s profound love for humankind heals our brokenness when human love fails and invites us into an ongoing process of growth in love of God, self, and neighbor. Intended for those who provide care with and on behalf of religious communities, author Karen Scheib focuses on listening and “restorying” practices occurring in the context and setting of congregations. By coauthoring narratives that promote healing and growth in love, pastoral caregivers become cocreators and companions who help others revise and construct life-stories reshaped by the grace of God. What Karen Scheib has done in this book is to reposition pastoral care as a theological activity performed in the context of the church. She draws deeply upon her Wesleyan theological heritage, upon an understanding of life in its fullness as growth in love and grace, and upon a “communion ecclesiology” undergirded by a communal understanding of the Trinitarian life of God. Thus grounded, she envisions pastoral care first as a rhythm of the life of the whole church and secondarily as a work of trained pastors. In her vision, pastoral care is rescued from a narrow understanding of it as exceptional acts of intervention performed only in moments of dire crisis. Instead, it becomes a “daily practice of pastoral care,” an attending, in love, to the stories of others and a “listening for ways God is already present in a life story.” Solidly theological, grounded in the life of the church, and eminently teachable – Karen Scheib has given us a great gift in this book.” from the Foreword -Thomas G. Long, Bandy Professor of Preaching, Emeritus, Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta, GA. "In a wonderfully engaging, reflective, and useful way, Karen Scheib captures something absolutely essential to pastoral care and yet often overlooked—the utter centrality of storytelling/listening, the power of stories to heal, and their vital connection to bigger stories told within religious communities. This book is a real milestone, reclaiming the importance of “narrative knowing” and grounding care not only in community but also within a comprehensive theological framework." --Bonnie J. Miller-McLemore, E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of Religion, Psychology, and Culture, The Divinity School and Graduate Department of Religion, Vanderbilt University Divinity School, Nashville, TN “Implementing narrative personality and therapy theories and anchored in ecclesiology and Wesleyan theology (NET), Karen Scheib’s book advances a long awaited and holistic approach to pastoral care. Her NET approach presents the embodiment of pastoral care by emphasizing both narrative and paradigmatic knowing, proposes the subjectivity of our stories in pastoral care by pointing out the interchangeability between us and our stories as subject and object, and underscores the dynamic process of pastoral care through the interconnection of the storyteller, listener, and context. Scheib’s image of story companion contributes to the field as a new paradigm of pastoral care and promises to be a significant resource in generating hope and growth in love for both pastoral caregiver and receiver.” —Angella Son, Associate Professor, Drew University, Madison, NJ "Pastoral theologian Scheib describes a narrative, ecclesial, and theological approach for listening to people’s life stories in such a way as to engender spiritual formation and growth in love. Scheib clarifies the connections between caring conversations and Christian theology. Clear and accessible prose as well as helpful exercises and discussion starters make this a fine teaching text." -The Christian Century, Sept. 29, 2016.

Bringing together methods, assumptions and approaches from a variety of disciplines, Geraldo U. de Sousa's innovative study explores the representation, perception, and function of the house, home, household, and family life in Shakespeare's great tragedies. Concentrating on King Lear, Hamlet, Othello, and Macbeth, de Sousa's examination of the home provides a fresh look at material that has been the topic of fierce debate. Through a combination of textual readings and a study of early modern housing conditions, accompanied by analyses that draw on anthropology, architecture, art history, the study of material culture, social history, theater history, phenomenology, and gender studies, this book demonstrates how Shakespeare explores the materiality of the early modern house and evokes domestic space to convey interiority, reflect on the habits of the mind, interrogate everyday life, and register elements of the tragic journey. Specific topics include the function of the disappearance of the castle in King Lear, the juxtaposition of home-centered life in Venice and nomadic, 'unhoused' wandering in Othello, and the use of special lighting effects to reflect this relationship, Hamlet's psyche in response to physical space, and the redistribution of domestic space in Macbeth. Images of the house, home, and household become visually and emotionally vibrant, and thus reflect, define, and support a powerful tragic narrative.
It is often assumed that the verbal and visual languages of indigenous people had little influence upon the classification of scientific, legal, and artistic objects in the metropolises and museums of nineteenth-century colonial powers. However, as this book demonstrates, it is a fallacy that colonized locals merely collected material for interested colonizers. Through an analysis of particular language notations and drawings hidden in colonial documents and a reexamination of cross-cultural communication, the book writes biographies for five objects that exemplify the tensions of nineteenth century history.
Using a philosophical and psychoanalytical approach, this book critically examines expert knowledge within architecture and urban planning. Its point of departure is the 'the gap' between visions and realities, intentions and outcomes in planning, with particular focus on projects in Sweden that try to create an 'urban atmosphere'. Finding insights from the work of Sigmund Freud and his followers, the book argues that urban planning during the 20th century is a neurotic activity prone to produce a type of alienation.
The Essex village of Earls Colne, one of the most studied parishes in England, has been the subject of an ongoing research project to collate its collection of historical documents. This book offers a fresh approach to the village’s early modern cultural and political world by focussing on the social relationships that bound the community together within its mental and physical landscape. MacKinnon reconstructs the dynamics of Earls Colne by examining how spaces within society were generated, gendered and governed, and how this was documented in the records, names and monuments of the parish.
Video art emerged as an art form that from the 1960s and onwards challenged the concept of art - hence, art historical practices. From the perspective of artists, critics, and scholars engaged with this new medium, art was seen as too limiting a notion. Video Art Historicized provides a novel, insightful and also challenging re-interpretation of this field by examining the discourse and its own premises. It takes a firm conceptual approach to the material, examining the conceptual, theoretical, and methodological implications that are simultaneously contested by both artists and authors, yet intertwined in both the legitimizing and the historicizing processes of video as art.

This history of one local church demonstrates the prayerful determination of its membership over five decades to craft a meaningful place of ministry in a spiritually challenging community which dates to the Mayflower Pilgrims. These members purposed to honor God by growing in their relationship with Him and one another through a balanced focus on worship, discipleship, fellowship, ministry, and evangelism. Throughout these years, ups and downs were plentiful, but Gods faithfulness and His joy were always loved by His servants at Dartmouth Bible Church. This history candidly captures those stories and turns the reader back to the Lord with thanksgiving for His loving presence among His people. Includes several appendices of historical data.

This book is the first volume of Thoroton's History of Nottinghamshire. Dr. Robert Thoroton (4 October 1623 - c. 21 November 1678) was an English antiquary, mainly remembered for his county history, The Antiquities of Nottinghamshire (1677). In 1667 Thoroton, aided by a band of helpers, began to work upon his great county history, The Antiquities of Nottinghamshire. This was published in London in 1677; it was dedicated to the eminent antiquarian William Dugdale and was illustrated by engravings by W. Hollar. It was Dugdale who had urged Thoroton to complete the work of history begun by Thoroton's father-in-law.
The statutory duty of public service ombudsmen (PSO) is to investigate claims of injustice caused by maladministration in the provision of public services. This book examines the modern role of the ombudsman within the overall emerging system of administrative justice and makes recommendations as to how PSO should optimize their potential within the wider administrative justice context. Recent developments are discussed and long standing questions that have yet to be adequately resolved in the ombudsman community are re-evaluated given broader changes in the administrative justice sector. The work balances theory and empirical research conducted in a number of common law countries. Although there has been much debate within the ombudsman community in recent years aimed at developing and improving the practice of ombudsmanry, this work represents a significant advance on current academic understanding of the discipline.
Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts, which has appeared in semi-annual volumes since 1969, is devoted to the recording, summarizing and indexing of astronomical publications throughout the world. It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documenta tion of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, compared to which our system of accumu lating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 32 contains literature published in 1982 and received before February 11, 1983; some older literature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included. We acknowledge with thanks contributions to this volume by Dr. J. Bou~a, Prague, who surveyed journals and publications in Czech and supplied us with abstracts in English.
Sunol-Never Too Small to Succed, shows there is hope for the under-dog. It is an inspiring story that provides hope for the individual and small organizations. It describes how dedication, commitment, and the will and desire to succeed, can help us achieve our goal. Sunol, as other small school districts, was destined to lose its local autonomy. The Governor and the California state legislature, along with leading college professors advocated elections within high school districts. The larger communities through the election process were able to out-vote the smaller communities and take them over. Although Sunol only had six percent of the voters, they were able to go to the larger communities and get those voters to vote for them. Eventually, the California legislature passed laws supporting the smaller districts and the Governor signed those bills into law. How was this done?

According to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970 it is prepared under the aus pices of the International Astronomical Union. Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive doc umentation in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. It is due to the ever lasting increase of the bulk of material that the information content of our regular volumes is growing seriously. Therefore, the need for detailed index informations allowing the performance of retrospective literature searches be comes more and more important. Volume 23/24-the second General Index of Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts - contains author and subject indexes to volumes II -14 and, respectively, 17-22. Thus, the astronomical and astrophysical literature of the whole five-year period 197 4 -1978 is cov ered by this volume. It is a pleasure to express our gratitude to Ms. Helga Ballmann, Ms. Monika Betz, Mr. Gernot Burkhardt, Ms. Lore Kiefert, Ms. Dagmar Roeder, Ms. Dimitra Roussou, and Mr. Werner Sanns for their kind support during the detailed preparation steps of the indexes.
Stories from the Street is a theological exploration of interviews with men and women who had experienced homelessness at some stage in their lives. Framed within a theology of story and a theology of liberation, Nixon suggests that story is not only a vehicle for creating human transformation but it is one of God's chosen means of effecting change. Short biographies of twelve characters are examined under themes including: crises in health and relationships, self-harm and suicide, anger and pain, God and the Bible. Expanding the existing literature of contextual theology, this book provides an alternative focus to a church-shaped mission by advocating with, and for, a very marginal group; suggesting that their experiences have much to teach the church. Churches are perceived as being active in terms of pastoral work, but reluctant to ask more profound questions about why homelessness exists at all. A theology of homelessness suggests not just a God of the homeless, but a homeless God, who shares stories and provides hope. Engaging with contemporary political and cultural debates about poverty, housing and public spending, Nixon presents a unique theological exploration of homeless people, suffering, hope and the human condition.

Do you enjoy reading moving stories packed with adventure, romance, and intrigue? More importantly, do you enjoy reading things that make the Bible more understandable and relatable to help you to grow spiritually? What if you could get all of that from one book? That is what Giants, Kings, and Psalms has done. Imagine reading the dramatic chronological narrative of the life of Israel’s King David while also enjoying the psalms in context of the events of his life. But it is more than an adventure and is superior to a biography. The format of this book allows the reader to see so much more than the three or four more commonly known events in David’s life. In addition, the author has taken the psalms and placed them, when possible, in context of the historical events that took place, allowing the reader to seamlessly read the book of Psalms in context of the events in David’s life. Your reading experience will be much easier since everything is placed in order for you. This book is going to speak to your life, draw you closer to the Lord, and give you enjoyment as you journey alongside David’s life and the psalms from beginning to end. You will also encounter some giants along the way, and did you know....Goliath was not the only one?
Americans have traditionally placed great value on self-reliance and fortitude. In recent decades, however, we have seen the rise of a therapeutic ethic that views Americans as emotionally underdeveloped, psychically frail, and requiring the ministrations of mental health professionals to cope with life's vicissitudes. Being "in touch with one's feelings" and freely expressing them have become paramount personal virtues. Today-with a book for every ailment, a counselor for every crisis, a lawsuit for every grievance, and a TV show for every conceivable problem-we are at risk of degrading our native ability to cope with life's challenges. Drawing on established science and common sense, Christina Hoff Sommers and Dr. Sally Satel reveal how "therapism" and the burgeoning trauma industry have come to pervade our lives. Help is offered everywhere under the presumption that we need it: in children's classrooms, the workplace, churches, courtrooms, the media, the military. But with all the "help" comes a host of troubling consequences, including: * The myth of stressed-out, homework-burdened, hypercompetitive, and depressed or suicidal schoolchildren in need of therapy and medication * The loss of moral bearings in our approach to lying, crime, addiction, and other foibles and vices * The unasked-for "grief counselors" who descend on bereaved families, schools, and communities following a tragedy, offering dubious advice while billing plenty of money * The expansion of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder from an affliction of war veterans to nearly everyone who has experienced a setback Intelligent, provocative, and wryly amusing, One Nation Under Therapy demonstrates that "talking about" problems is no substitute for confronting them.
This is the other side of the story. Before the Second World War, Ann Basu's family of Jewish tailors lived where the BT Tower stands today. At that time of high migration, the women's fashion trade and the new car industry were sweeping into Fitzrovia, Russian and German anarchists argued in its clubs, Indian revolutionaries practised at the shooting range, and popular cafes such as Lyons' transformed the social lives of workers. The Jews of Fitzrovia and Soho saw each other as being on the 'other side' of Oxford Street, and this book reflects Fitzrovia's distinctive 'inbetween-ness' – at the inner edge of central London, but separate from the West End. Putting the spotlight on Fitzrovia's enterprising twentieth-century immigrant workers, this is the history of working-class and outsider voices that have previously been muted.
An Absence of Honor By: Dr. Diana Beard-Williams An Absence of Honor is a collection of essays exploring the different layers of intrigue, self-examination, and retribution an activist in any community may encounter. Learn the Ten Commandments of activism and arm yourself with the knowledge to protect yourself and others. If your purpose is to one day become a smart, successful, and safe activist, Beard-Williams will lead the way.
For a wide variety of reasons, colleges and universities have increased their online course offerings. These programs, including both formal degree programs as well as non-credit and leisure learning options, rely on students to engage with their faculty members as well as other learners to maximize their class experiences. Virtual learning, however, can be a difficult space to create community and resulted in the need to explore how community and culture can be constructed in the virtual, tech-fed world. The model presented here consists of five key elements that program administrators, instructional designers, and teaching faculty must all take into consideration as they develop their courses.
How could Jesus be crucified on Friday afternoon, lay in the grave three nights as recorded in the Bible, and rise and be walking around on the first day of the week, Sunday? This question, although asked many times, never seemed to be fully or satisfactorily answered for author Robert W. Mann. This study seeks to answer the above by uniting the Old and New Testaments. This work contains no theories, doctrine, or deep theological explanations, but instead simply conveys the Scriptures word for word, arranged and connected in their ordained order, bringing to light a completed picture that is readily seen and understood. Mann provides interesting and enlightening information for the thoughtful reader, who will hopefully enjoy the same level of satisfaction and fulfillment as he experienced during the years of research.

The lessons of this voyage are not just about axes and hoses but hope, forgiveness and love. "As a professor and a firefighter, Dr. McCluskey shifts gears easily between the metaphysical and the macho, pontificating in a pin striped suit by day and plunging into a smoky, flaming house by night." -The New York Times "It is a book that you will want to read again and again. It is a remarkable story that you will want to share with those you love." -Dr. Robert Schachat, author of The Seven Conditions of Trust "Thoughts on Fire is a book that is at once entertaining and enlightening" -Dr. John Briggs, author of The Seven Life Lessons of Chaos
