Cicero's Brutus is a history of Roman oratory, in the form of a dialogue between Cicero, Atticus, and the eponymous Brutus. This new edition by Douglas R. Thomas presents the first comprehensive study of the transmission of the text, a critical edition of the Latin text, and a textual commentary. The first part of the book presents the study of the manuscript tradition, employng the stemmatic method to establish the relationships between all 107 extant manuscripts of Brutus, and demonstrating that the stemma has three independent branches in the first part of the text and four in the second. The study also shows that the ninth-century Cremona fragment is part of the long-lost archetype, the Codex Laudensis, and that F, the manuscript copied by Niccolò Niccoli, is the source of the majority of the tradition. Brief descriptions are provided of the manuscripts in a catalogue. The second part of the volume presents a new edition of Brutus with critical apparatus, based on the study of the text's transmission. This book is a biography of a scientist who pioneered the development of plant pathology in Australia in the 19th and early 20th century, and was internationally acclaimed. After 20 years as a plant pathologist, he was asked to find the cause and cure of a serious physiological disorder of apples. While the cause eluded him, and everyone else for another 60 years, he again won international gratitude for the improvements he brought to the apple industry. However because he did not find the cause, he was deemed to have failed by his political masters who were malignantly influenced by a jealous rival. The discovery in 2012-2013 of government files covering the period of the bitter pit investigation, from 1911 to 1916; reveal the extent of the unjust criticism of McAlpine while history has vindicated the management recommendations made to reduce bitter-pit losses. The focus on bitter-pit management late in McAlpine’s Career also meant that those who value his memory have been less aware of the remarkable achievements of McAlpine in the time before he left Great Britain – the brilliance of his teaching and drawing skills –featured in the early teaching texts for botany and zoology (the latter with his brother) which are now accessible on-line. There is something not only boundless about time, but also raw and untamed. In its pure form, time would be too much for us to handle. We would be crushed by the sheer immensity of it, or else we would lose our minds trying to make sense of such unmediated time. Luckily, for the most part we don’t experience time in its pure form. Time comes to us already processed: shaped, engineered, tamed. The volume does fine justice to the notion that we experience time as already shaped by religion, politics, and culture. Whether its contributions cover religious or political figures, philosophers or poets, mystics or physicists, they show – sometimes explicitly, sometimes more discreetly – how difficult it is to deal with time in a pure, unmediated form. The contributors’ cultural, religious, and intellectual rooting inform the way think about time, just as about anything else. Gabriel's Rebellion tells the dramatic story of what was perhaps the most extensive slave conspiracy in the history of the American South. Douglas Egerton illuminates the complex motivations that underlay two related Virginia slave revolts: the first, in 1800, led by the slave known as Gabriel; and the second, called the 'Easter Plot,' instigated in 1802 by one of his followers. Although Gabriel has frequently been portrayed as a messianic, Samson-like figure, Egerton shows that he was a literate and highly skilled blacksmith whose primary goal was to destroy the economic hegemony of the 'merchants,' the only whites he ever identified as his enemies. According to Egerton, the social, political, and economic disorder of the Revolutionary era weakened some of the harsh controls that held slavery in place during colonial times. Emboldened by these conditions, a small number of literate slaves--most of them highly skilled artisans--planned an armed insurrection aimed at destroying slavery in Virginia. The intricate scheme failed, as did the Easter Plot that stemmed from it, and Gabriel and many of his followers were hanged. By placing the revolts within the broader context of the volatile political currents of the day, Egerton challenges the conventional understanding of race, class, and politics in the early days of the American republic.

My paternal grandfather was an Australian soldier injured during the First World War. He met my grandmother whilst convalescing in Leicester, they married and had two children. Unfortunately, my grandfather found it difficult to settle in England and after ten years returned to Australia taking his three year old son with him. My grandmother would not go with him and remained in Leicester, pregnant with my father. She never saw her husband or eldest child again. This was all I knew about my grandfather, apart from his name, Thomas Johnstone and his son was named Archie. On the one hundredth anniversary of the start of the First World War, I determined to track him down, to find out who he was and whether the family story of him was true or not. This is the story of my search and the amazing discoveries I made, which would give me a greater insight into my ancestor’s past and the repercussions the First World War had on them. It would take me half way around the world and bring heartache and joy. It is a story that will inspire you to look into your own pasts because the First World War touched everybody’s life and the lives of their future generations. It is only now that people feel they can ask how the war affected their ancestors and to discover the truth that the people, who experienced it, were unable to talk about it.
