In the 1980s, poet, fiction writer and dramatist Douglas Messerli began "retranslating" the original texts of late 19th century and early 20th century French, Spanish, and Russian writers into something that he felt was closer to the spirit (if not the literal word) of the original. These poems -- which he described as "after" the originals -- were often closer to the text than other translations; in other cases, Messerli was looser with the language, particularly when the poem seemed to be illuminating hidden issues of sexuality or gender. The poems alternate with Messerli's own "new" poems which were influenced by the poems he had written "after". Together, the alternating "after" and "new" poems testify to the influence of our poetic heritage through both form and subject.

The format of the 1982 edition has been changed in the service of space and editorial costs. An outline mode of presentation has been continued while abandoning wasteful indentations of text. Almost all references have been retained for their bibliographic value unless they were felt to be no longer germane to the matrix of medical thinking. With the exception of a few statements and paragraphs in a number of sections, the book has been virtually entirely rewritten. With the addition of 2113 references in the current review, the total number of papers currently identified is well in excess of 5000. Thus, this textual compendium of individual reports represents as current a summary of cardiologic thinking as the publishing process will allow. With 1625 references having been added to the 1982 edition, bringing the total to almost 7000, the Review constitutes not only as ready and comprehensive an updated reference as is probably available, but also a bibliographic resource.
