The mountains of Ashe County, in North Carolina's northwest corner, support an antediluvian mixed hardwood forest, rooted in nutrient-rich soil and watered by 40 to 60 inches of annual rainfall. From the highest peaks--approaching a mile above sea level--to the lowest valleys, through which flows one of the most ancient river systems in the world, trees carpet much of the county's 406 square miles. Species with nicknames like wahoo, goosefoot, ironwood, shadblow, bom-a-gilly and buckeye thrive. Others, dominant in the region for millennia, have all but disappeared in recent years. The author describes in detail their anatomy and ecology, and discusses maple syrup production, the local nursery business and the lore and deep value of heritage apple trees; 165 photographs are included.
This book explores subjects like faith, works, politics, evolution, creation, racism, abortion, sexual, drug, and alcohol addiction, charismatic and traditional beliefs, miracles, why believe the Bible, does God exist, the carnal man, the Christian man, the rise of militant homosexuals, what was the Beginning, and does God send people to hell who don't have Jesus in their heart even if they never heard of Him? For one man, the Cold War never ended Michael Callaway is a lot like the battered-looking old shrimp boat he’s purchased. But looks can be deceiving. Both used to be something else. Callaway a customs agent, the boat a World War II Patrol-Torpedo boat. Both have hidden strengths and secrets. A long trip on his slow, old boat will help Callaway escape the horrors of the last year. Too many murders. Too many memories. He heads from his home in Florida to visit his last and only friend, exiled to an aging former Navy Seals training outpost a hundred miles south of Anchorage, Alaska. Callaway’s battle to the death in the harsh environment will pale in comparison to the battle he’s about to face from a determined madman. Arkadi Frankovich, Russian freighter captain and former KGB killer, never accepted the end of communism in Russia. The U.S. Army base in Fairbanks has a nuclear armed missile. Stealing it and launching it into Siberia would start World War III and a return to Russia’s glory days. With newfound love and the fate of the world on the line, every bit of Callaway’s strength, skill and investigative talents will be tested in a race to unravel the dangerous game playing out in some of the most beautiful and treacherous country on earth. Can he stop this man from taking his shot—a suicide shot—that could destroy them all?
What qualities make a man an effective father? Are there a few key things a man can do that will lead his children to keep respecting him and want to emulate his Christian walk even when they are grown? By examining Bible fathering stories with both good and bad outcomes, along with some other key teachings of Jesus, this book finds answers that many dads will find quite helpful. Especially with the hectic pace of life that many dads face today, the conclusions of this book will allow dads to focus their energy on the things that ultimately matter the most in transferring our hearts to our children.

Not only is THE LAST TRAIN FROM ELKLAND a brief history of four northwestern North Carolina mountain communities, it is also about two railroads that operated in and around these communities: the Virginia¿Carolina, also known as the ¿Virginia Creeper¿ (in 1916, the Virginia¿Carolina Railway was bought by the Norfolk & Western Railway, and renamed the Abingdon Branch), and the Deep Gap Tie and Lumber Company¿s railroad, whose former Hassinger Lumber Company¿s Shay logging locomotive operated alongside Gap Creek, from Deep Gap, in Watauga County, North Carolina, to the South Fork of the New River, near Fleetwood, in Ashe County, North Carolina, a distance of only about five miles. Although these communities were located in North Carolina, they all had a common tie-in with the neighboring state of Virginia ¿ the trains of the two railroads hauled logs that had been felled in the area surrounding the four communities, timber destined to be cut at the Hassinger Lumber Company¿s sawmill in Konnarock, Virginia. By the time the blades went silent on Christmas Eve, 1928, almost 400 million board feet of the area¿s best hardwood had passed through the Hassinger Lumber Company¿s sawmill. How much did this unchecked logging contribute to the immense damage done to the area by the disastrous floods of 1916 and 1940? This question is also explored in this book.
When asked what they know about the Bible, most people will tell you that David killed Goliath, Sampson got a haircut, Adam and Eve eat the apple, and Jesus was born in Bethlehem on Christmas morning. The Bible is filled with interesting, fascinating and inspiring stories, but there is a theme running through the pages of the Bible that most people miss. There are foundational ideas that describe God’s relationship with humanity. What is God prepared to do for us? What does God want from us? These foundational texts are found throughout both the Old and New Testaments and paint a wonderful, hopeful picture of how God intends our life to be.

Why does the letter k signify a strikeout on a baseball score sheet? Where is the world's oldest tennis court?
Average Doug is a compilation of an ordinary American citizen's views about the state of America today and how politics, government, and our society play a key role in determining the future of our great country. Ever since he was young, Doug Kammerer has followed American politics and current events. As a volunteer with several conservative political campaigns encompassing presidential, congressional, and gubernatorial races, Kammerer gained an insider's glimpse into the intricacies of our political system and shares his insight on why he feels our country is headed in the wrong direction today. While explaining his views on the Fairness Doctrine, government bailouts, and socialism, Kammerer also discusses why he thinks the judicial branch is now starting to take over more in deciding the role of Americans and weighs all the reasons why he feels conservatives should once again learn to adhere to their principles. Kammerer includes his thoughts on our current society including the ways society is regarding bad behavior and what he would like to communicate to such organizations as NOW and GLAAD. With a great pride for his country, Kammerer provides an intriguing collection of personal opinions sure to spark lively discussions among conservatives and liberals alike.
Saturday Night is the intimate history of the original Saturday Night Live, from its beginnings as an outlaw program produced by an unruly band of renegades from the comedy underground to a TV institution that made stars of John Belushi, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman, Garrett Morris, Joe Piscopo and Eddie Murphy. This is the book that revealed to the world what really happened behind the scenes during the first ten years of this groundbreaking program, from the battles SNL fought with NBC to the battles fought within the show itself. It's all here: The love affairs, betrayals, rivalries, drug problems, overnight successes, and bitter failures, mixed with the creation of some of the most outrageous and original comedy ever. "It reads like a thriller," said the Associated Press, "and may be the best book ever written about television." Available for the first time in ebook format, this edition features nearly fifty photographs of cast, crew and sketches.

In 1904, when the Hassinger brothers ¿ Luther (L. C.), Will, and John ¿ came from the northwestern Pennsylvania county of Forest to the southwestern Virginia county of Washington with the idea of continuing their father¿s lumber business, they liked what they saw: thousands of acres of virgin forest. Two years later, they built a sawmill in Washington County and a company town to support its workers. L. C.¿s mother, Letisha, named the town Konnarock. In less than ten years, the Hassinger Lumber Company of Konnarock, Virginia, had employed over 400 workers, laid down over 75 miles of railroad track (they named their railroad the White Top Railway), built 20 logging camps, and sawed almost 60,000 board feet of lumber per day at its mill. Not only did the Hassinger Lumber Company cut timber in Washington County, Virginia, they also did extensive timbering in neighboring Ashe County, North Carolina, and also sawed timber cut in Watauga County, North Carolina, when the Deep Gap Tie and Lumber Company, located in the Watauga County village of Deep Gap, bought the Hassinger Lumber Company¿s Shay locomotive No. 3, sending its logs to the Hassinger sawmill in Konnarock, 50 miles away. By the time the blades went silent on Christmas Eve, 1928, almost 400 million board feet of the area¿s best wood had passed through the Hassinger Lumber Company¿s sawmill. This book contains the story of the Hassinger Lumber Company and its company town, Konnarock, as well as information about the Beaver Dam Railroad, the Laurel Railway (both located in the northeastern Tennessee county of Johnson), the Virginia¿Carolina Railway (the ¿Virginia Creeper¿), the logging of the Pond Mountain area of Ashe County, North Carolina, by the Damascus Lumber Company, and the Hassinger Lumber Company¿s logging operations in the Elkland (present-day Todd) area of Ashe County.

We leave shadows, not footprints. Newlywed Danny McKenna’s honeymoon ends abruptly when he learns his father has died, uncannily, on the same day as his hero, Frank Sinatra. Returning home to his knotty Irish American family, Danny is confronted with a painful truth—while he knows everything about the famous singer, his own father is a mystery. Tasked with giving a eulogy for a man he hardly knows, Danny sets out to uncover his dad’s past—an immigrant’s tale of mid-twentieth-century America and the harsh realities of WWII lived in stark contrast to Frank Sinatra’s famously extravagant life. Along the way, Danny’s own demons nearly destroy him as he struggles to accept his father’s deepest secret—a journey that takes him into the heart of darkness before he learns to live in the light. Fame, family, and forgiveness are among the many themes in Doug McIntyre’s debut novel, a story full of vibrant scenery, gripping characters, humor, and profound moments of self-realization. Frank’s Shadow is a deeply (sometimes darkly) human story wrapped in the trappings of a delightfully gritty love letter to New York City’s less glamorous neighborhoods.
