Although evangelicals enjoyed repect and leadership in American society in the decades before the Civil War, their fortunes declined precipitately in the wake of the industrialism, modernism, and secularism of the next half-century. But the 1920s evangelicals felt like an embattled minority within a largely unbelieving culture, and perceived that history was very much out of their control. Frank examines the spiritual significance of these events by placing them against a biblical understanding of the gospel. He sees in the confidence and self congratulation of the turn-of-the-century evangelicals a protrait of the spiritually rich of the Bible who must lose their riches before they can come to know God truly. Harmful uses of the gospel are explored through dispensational premillenialism, the 'victorious life' theology, and the revivalism of Billy Sunday. Altogether, Less Than Conquerors is a call to replace the blurred and self-serving gospel of a besieged subculture with the genuine gospel of Jesus Christ.

John the Apostle was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and he heard Jesus speak as the voice of a trumpet. When John turned to look, the first thing he saw was "seven golden candlesticks" and Jesus in the midst of them. What are these "seven golden candlesticks" John heralds to us in the first chapter of the book of Revelation? Bible scholars and students have speculated on this topic for almost two thousand years. Some suggest a deeper meaning of the seven golden candlesticks is they represent seven periods of the church, seven personality types within the church, and seven types of churches, among others. But no widely held view exists. That’s now, but what about then? There is much diversity in Christianity today in terms of what constitutes necessary core beliefs, but what can we know about the earliest Christianity? Until the major councils began in the fourth century, were all who claimed to be Christian considered part of the church, or was there more to it than just claiming a name? Is there evidence for how the church understood core and necessary beliefs prior to Constantine’s arrival in history and the Council of Nicea in AD 325? This book examines such questions. Using only those materials that are accepted by most scholars on the subject, whether they are Christian or not, and focusing on the period from AD 30–250, a picture emerges showing what Christians held as a core belief as well as how flexible they were on this belief. Only after identifying where the church stood in this period can we begin to understand whether others such as Ebionites, Docetists, and Marcionites would have been accepted as Christian. A case is made based on writings from the church, the Nag Hammadi, and a completely secular tool from the twentieth century to find the conclusion to this question.

A life application exegesis of a book of the Bible is different and often hard to find, especially of one of the Epistles. Life application is not a historical document, nor is it a purely theological writing. It is the taking of the Word of God and applying to the daily life of the believer in order that the Christian may “live Christ” in his walk so that those around him may see God “lived out” and thus come to know him. As the believer becomes more adept at doing this, the Holy Spirit will be able to place that believer in more and more circumstances where he can use the believer, often without the believer even knowing that he is being used. It becomes natural to the believer. Jesus puts it this way. He said, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit.” All we have to do is hang in there. Jesus does the rest through his Holy Spirit. That is what life-application exegesis is all about. It is about living experiences of life with Christ so we may learn what Jesus wants to do in our lives to touch others. Just think—Jesus wants to use us to touch others. Blows your mind, doesn’t it?
