This is how simple the complicated music business can be! I was sitting "shooting the bull" with the A&R man at Epic Records one day. He said, "You know what I would really like to find is a white kid that sings the blues like a black guy." I said, "I know a kid like that," or words to that effect. I then told him what I knew about Tim Williams. Tim was starving to death trying to run a Coffee House in Santa Barbara. He was only nineteen-years old, but very good. The problem was that I had no idea what to do with a Blues singer. Suddenly there was an answer to the question. The A&R man said, "Bring him down!" which meant to his office in Hollywood. When the day came to go to Hollywood we went in my car. I didn't think he had one that would make it down and back. He showed up in a pair of dark brown corduroy pants and a dark polo-type shirt, both clean, but covered with white lint. I was embarrassed to "showcase" him that way, but it could have been a sensitive subject so away we went. I didn't have a clue what to expect when we arrived at the office. In the now familiar get-to-the-point fashion the man said, "Let's hear something" after a few minutes of visiting. Tim opened his guitar case, took out his twelve string guitar and began playing as if the outcome didn't make a damn bit of difference to him. Mr. A&R man asked him to do some old standard, then something original that Tim had written. Then suddenly he said, "Sounds good, let's do a thing, make a record!" Just like that!

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, modernist writers developed new techniques for depicting characters' thoughts, feelings, and desires that revolutionized the novel form—a revolution novelists and critics are still reckoning with today. Troubling Late Modernism tracks how those techniques have been perversely reinvented by some of the most influential and innovative writers of the postwar period. Chapters on Vladimir Nabokov, Samuel Beckett, Toni Morrison, John Banville, J. M. Coetzee, and Eimear McBride reveal how these writers at once exploit and extend modernist forms of narration to cultivate disquieting affective attachments to protagonists compelled by violent or exploitative sexual desires. By interrogating the expressive power and ethical liabilities of modes of writing that give us intimate access to characters' inner lives, late modernism poses fundamental philosophical questions about emotion and its inseparability from knowledge and ethical deliberation. Whilst other historians of the novel have characterized late modernism's formal innovations as ethically and politically edifying, Troubling Late Modernism highlights their more disquieting potential for lending sympathy and profundity to sentiments deemed inadmissible in our everyday lives. Charting late modernism's characteristic fusion of aesthetic difficulty with emotional and ethical provocation demands an approach attuned to the experience of reading these disturbingly erotic narratives. To Do This, You Must Know How traces black vocal music instruction and inspiration from the halls of Fisk University to the mining camps of Birmingham and Bessemer, Alabama, and on to Chicago and New Orleans. In the 1870s, the Original Fisk University Jubilee Singers successfully combined Negro spirituals with formal choral music disciplines and established a permanent bond between spiritual singing and music education. Early in the twentieth century there were countless initiatives in support of black vocal music training conducted on both national and local levels. The surge in black religious quartet singing that occurred in the 1920s owed much to this vocal music education movement. In Bessemer, Alabama, the effect of school music instruction was magnified by the emergence of community-based quartet trainers who translated the spirit and substance of the music education movement for the inhabitants of working-class neighborhoods. These trainers adapted standard musical precepts, traditional folk practices, and popular music conventions to create something new and vital Bessemer's musical values directly influenced the early development of gospel quartet singing in Chicago and New Orleans through the authority of emigrant trainers whose efforts bear witness to the effectiveness of “trickle down” black music education. A cappella gospel quartets remained prominent well into the 1950s, but by the end of the century the close harmony aesthetic had fallen out of practice, and the community-based trainers who were its champions had virtually disappeared, foreshadowing the end of this remarkable musical tradition.
