They repeatedly clashed with the cavalry and raided wagon trains, and there was bad blood between the band and the Army after the Battle of San Pasqual, when they were on opposite sides during the Mexican American War. In 1854, as traffic was on the increase along the historic trade route, the Jicarilla soundly defeated the 1st United States Dragoons in the Battle of Cieneguilla. Cieneguilla was the worst defeat of the US Army in the West up to that time, and it was just one of the first major battles between the US Army and Apache forces during the Ute Wars. According to one version of events, the 60 dragoons, under the direction of a Lt. Davidson, had engaged in an unauthorized attack on theJicarilla while they were out on patrol. Others claimed that the Jicarilla either ambushed the Army or taunted them into attack. Kit Carson, who was agent for the Jicarilla, would defend Davidson’s actions—and after this fight, he served as a scout against the Jicarilla. Much like the Sioux defeat of Custer at Little Big Horn, the Jicarilla’s victory over the Army led to retribution and disaster. The Jicarilla were defeated and faded from memory before the Civil War. These are the events that brought them to ruin.

The Rejuvenation Series was drafted between 2013 and 2015 and comprises four books. While some of the characters, people, and events follow on from book to book, in character they are all different. Rekindling of Hope (Political novel written in 2013 thinly disguised as a science fiction drama.) Consolidation of Hope (Pure science fiction novel.) Fulfilment of Hope (Although nominally a science fiction drama, a significant part of the book was about how to renovate the ecology of a primitive planet.) Defence of Hope (This book has two timelines, one of which goes into the past using a backdrop of real characters and events dressed up with a fictional narrative, while the other moves into the far future. The timelines regularly intersect, and it is actually a mystery novel in the sense that a perceptive reader might guess before the end what was actually happening. A few clues were scattered through the text.) Completion of Hope Description With four books in the series, Doug decided to set up the stories in two paired texts which fit together naturally, Starting of Hope being the first and Completion of Hope the second. Fulfilment of Hope Following on from Rekindling of Hope and Consolidation of Hope, this science fiction novel describes the settlement of a primitive planet and the subsequent development of a new federation by one of the Shepherd children. In this project, they are assisted by artificial intelligences, which are effectively life forms in their own right. Dr. Katie Shepherd married a soldier called Hans Gretner, and the pair of them prepare to be taken together with about four thousand colonists to a geologically young planet at an enormous distance from Earth. The giant spacecraft which is to carry them is known as Habitat, and its resident artificial intelligence is called Sheila. No trace is to be left on Earth of their final destination, and they will have to take all the fauna and flora required to reseed a planet with them. The Bearing continues to provide considerable help, as the successful creation of this federation is critical to their plans for further developing the galaxy. They are certain that Katie is going to have to overcome huge problems in setting up her federation. This is a book of ecological development, love and war, disaster, and recovery. It completes the trilogy of Rejuvenation books by bringing the story full circle. Defence of Hope Throughout human history, most significant events would have happened through movement of peoples, food and economic pressures, or fundamental religious or political differences. In a few cases, individuals have played starring roles, and their presence or absence made a fundamental change to the flow of history. Defence of Hope combines two storylines in a science fiction format, one of which uses the backdrop of real events and people in the past combined with a fictional narrative to describe some key divertants. The other storyline moves into the far future, and the two threads regularly intersect. While it is a standalone novel, it uses characters and some of the events of the Rejuvenation Trilogy as a start point. This is actually a mystery novel in the sense that a perceptive reader might guess before the end what is actually happening. A few clues were scattered through the text.

The Wilmington, North Carolina firm of Bannister, Cowan & Company, in its glowing report titled, just as glowingly, The Resources of North Carolina: Its Natural Wealth, Condition, and Advantages, as Existing in 1869. Presented to the Capitalists and People of the Central and Northern States, wrote that "[t]he three most noted copper mines in the northwestern part of the State are the Elk Knob, Peach Bottom, and Ore Knob. ... In the southeast corner of Ashe County is another mine of some note, known as Gap Creek [aka the Copper Knob Mine]." THERE'S COPPER IN THEM THAR HILLS! contains the histories of those four mines, which, as Bannister, Cowan & Company pointed out in its report, were all located in the mountains of northwest North Carolina: the Elk Knob Mine in Watauga County, the Copper Knob Mine and the Ore Knob Mine in Ashe County, and the Peach Bottom Mine in Alleghany County.

This slashing critique charges that the federal government and interest groups have badly mismanaged the political process for private ends. Transcending conventional ideologies, Bandow sees the root of the problem as our failure to honor the Founding Fathers' intention to establish a limited government with severely circumscribed powers in all areas. People abuse power; it is human nature. Only limited state authority will keep the political process from disintegrating into petty fighting among factions, each competing for its own limited self-interest. The demise of the original restraints has created an overgrown federal government that is ever more wasteful, inefficient, and unjust. Doug Bandow spares no sacred cows. He considers state interference in the free market responsible for an ethic of legalized theft, which allows interest groups to use the state to enrich themselves through subsidies, competitive restrictions, and other protectionist measures. He sees a judiciary that has aided the other branches of government in manipulating human conduct and restricting personal freedom for both liberal and conservative reasons. And in foreign policy he sees the development of an interventionist consensus, whereby Washington attempts to remake foreign nations in its image through military intervention and foreign aid, with disastrous results. "The Politics of Plunder "is written by an insider who combines theoretical and analytical skill with practical political experience. Bandow served in the most conservative administration of recent years yet freely criticizes the nostrums of the Right. He is an evangelical Christian yet dislikes the tactics of the Religious Right. His unique background--campaign worker, lawyer, presidential aide, magazine editor, policy analyst, and journalist--enables him to go far beyond the usual Washington commentary. Bandow's objective is to develop a new political perspective that transcends both conservative and liberal boundaries and emphasizes individual liberty, skepticism of state power, and tolerance of others.
