The three novellas were written at quite different times and in differing circumstances and consequently reflect my concerns of their particular moment of creation, while nevertheless unifying around the central theme of inhuman abuses of power. Mind of God was written originally as a screen play in a vaguely Pinterian mould and still retains many traces of its origins, particularly in its closed, intense, surreal setting. It is a story of an ordinary man, one of the 'long-term unemployed', going to a job interview, which turns out to be cruelly oppressive, and is told not by the man but by the all-powerful interviewer... The Rise (and Rise) and Fall of Gianluca delle Pozza Nere seems light-years away from the foregoing, in terms of setting and characterisation. Its events occur in 1512, at a moment of profound crisis in the life of the failing Florentine Republic. Gianluca, a young would-be-painter, is employed as secretary to the Secretary of the Second Chancellery, Master Machiavelli- a job which he finds boring and irksome in the extreme. Then one day, out of the blue, he is offered the opportunity of modelling for a great Venetian painter, Maestro Lorenzo, who is working on a large, specially commissioned painting in Florence. Fired by the hope and ambition of his would-be calling he is taken on by the Maestro, but things turn out very differently from what he had imagined... A 'rite of passage' novella whose consequences, for Gianluca and for Florence, are formidable. Checkmate , the last written of this trilogy of novellas, might well have been sub-titled 'the biter bit'. An arrogant, autocratic politician agrees to participate in a stunt devised by students as a contribution to rag week, with quite unforeseen consequences...She is totally humiliated by her experience but, in the end, is forced to re-consider her own attitudes and the outcomes of her government's policies for a bleak world. All three stories are driven by humour and irony, but their concerns and resolutions are highly relevant to the world we now live in.

Sapp and Henry set out simply to build a nice Polynesian restaurant and ended up establishing the most magnificent one of them all. Outside, two giant Easter Island heads with flames spouting from their topknots stood guard while customers dined in a faux tribal village with thatched huts, palm trees and a towering fireplace moai. One wall featured aquariums of exotic fish and another had windows overlooking a tropical rainforest with periodic thunderstorms. For nearly forty years, the Kahiki was the undisputed center of tiki culture.

Is the market economy, particularly as it affects the poor, fundamentally compatible with Christian moral and social teaching? Or is it in substantial tension with that tradition? In Wealth, Poverty, and Human Destiny, editors Doug Bandow and David L. Schindler bring together some of today’s leading economists, theologians, and social critics to consider whether the triumph of capitalism is a cause for celebration or concern. Michael Novak, Richard John Neuhaus, Max Stackhouse, and other defenders of democratic capitalism marshal a number of arguments in an attempt to show that, among other things, capitalism is more Christian in its foundation and consequences than is conceded by its critics—that, as Stackhouse and Lawrence Stratton write, “the roots of the modern corporation lie in the religious institutions of the West,” and that, as Novak contends, “globalization is the natural ecology” of Christianity. The critics of liberal economics argue, on the other hand, that it is historically and theologically shortsighted to consider the global capitalist order and the liberalism that sustains it as the only available option. Any system which has as its implicit logic that “stable and preserving relationships among people, places, and things do not matter and are of no worth,” in the words of Wendell Berry, should be regarded with grave suspicion by religious believers and all men and women of goodwill. Bandow and Schindler take up these arguments and many others in their responses, which carefully consider the claims of the essayists and thus pave the way for a renewed dialogue on the moral status of capitalism, a dialogue only now re-emerging from under the Cold War rubble. In 1904, when the Hassinger brothers ¿ Luther (L. C.), Will, and John ¿ came from the northwestern Pennsylvania county of Forest to the southwestern Virginia county of Washington with the idea of continuing their father¿s lumber business, they liked what they saw: thousands of acres of virgin forest. Two years later, they built a sawmill in Washington County and a company town to support its workers. L. C.¿s mother, Letisha, named the town Konnarock. In less than ten years, the Hassinger Lumber Company of Konnarock, Virginia, had employed over 400 workers, laid down over 75 miles of railroad track (they named their railroad the White Top Railway), built 20 logging camps, and sawed almost 60,000 board feet of lumber per day at its mill. Not only did the Hassinger Lumber Company cut timber in Washington County, Virginia, they also did extensive timbering in neighboring Ashe County, North Carolina, and also sawed timber cut in Watauga County, North Carolina, when the Deep Gap Tie and Lumber Company, located in the Watauga County village of Deep Gap, bought the Hassinger Lumber Company¿s Shay locomotive No. 3, sending its logs to the Hassinger sawmill in Konnarock, 50 miles away. By the time the blades went silent on Christmas Eve, 1928, almost 400 million board feet of the area¿s best wood had passed through the Hassinger Lumber Company¿s sawmill. This book contains the story of the Hassinger Lumber Company and its company town, Konnarock, as well as information about the Beaver Dam Railroad, the Laurel Railway (both located in the northeastern Tennessee county of Johnson), the Virginia¿Carolina Railway (the ¿Virginia Creeper¿), the logging of the Pond Mountain area of Ashe County, North Carolina, by the Damascus Lumber Company, and the Hassinger Lumber Company¿s logging operations in the Elkland (present-day Todd) area of Ashe County.
