In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, modernist writers developed new techniques for depicting characters' thoughts, feelings, and desires that revolutionized the novel form—a revolution novelists and critics are still reckoning with today. Troubling Late Modernism tracks how those techniques have been perversely reinvented by some of the most influential and innovative writers of the postwar period. Chapters on Vladimir Nabokov, Samuel Beckett, Toni Morrison, John Banville, J. M. Coetzee, and Eimear McBride reveal how these writers at once exploit and extend modernist forms of narration to cultivate disquieting affective attachments to protagonists compelled by violent or exploitative sexual desires. By interrogating the expressive power and ethical liabilities of modes of writing that give us intimate access to characters' inner lives, late modernism poses fundamental philosophical questions about emotion and its inseparability from knowledge and ethical deliberation. Whilst other historians of the novel have characterized late modernism's formal innovations as ethically and politically edifying, Troubling Late Modernism highlights their more disquieting potential for lending sympathy and profundity to sentiments deemed inadmissible in our everyday lives. Charting late modernism's characteristic fusion of aesthetic difficulty with emotional and ethical provocation demands an approach attuned to the experience of reading these disturbingly erotic narratives. In dialogue with recent debates about critical method, Troubling Late Modernism presents a new way of closely reading prose fiction that brings together the lessons of formalism and affect theory.
Although evangelicals enjoyed repect and leadership in American society in the decades before the Civil War, their fortunes declined precipitately in the wake of the industrialism, modernism, and secularism of the next half-century. But the 1920s evangelicals felt like an embattled minority within a largely unbelieving culture, and perceived that history was very much out of their control. Frank examines the spiritual significance of these events by placing them against a biblical understanding of the gospel. He sees in the confidence and self congratulation of the turn-of-the-century evangelicals a protrait of the spiritually rich of the Bible who must lose their riches before they can come to know God truly. Harmful uses of the gospel are explored through dispensational premillenialism, the 'victorious life' theology, and the revivalism of Billy Sunday. Altogether, Less Than Conquerors is a call to replace the blurred and self-serving gospel of a besieged subculture with the genuine gospel of Jesus Christ.
The Experience of Emerging Adulthood among Street-Involved Youth tells the story of young people who were street-involved from their early to mid-teens into their 20s, particularly their experiences of emerging adulthood while struggling towards young adulthood and independence. These youth experienced emerging and early adulthood earlier than other youth while living independently of guardians, detached from formal education, and working in the underground economy. After leaving their guardians they were choosing how to be different than their family, learning to cope with instability, enjoying and protecting their independence, and they experienced some satisfaction with their ability to manage. As one youth stated, "away from my family, I learned that I was not stupid." Their success was facilitated by harm-reduction services, like access to shelter and food, that gave them time to experiment with living independently and to practice being responsible for themselves and others. Later they begin to prefer non-street identities, and they began to think about their desires for the future; the distance between their current lives and those aspirations was the experience of feeling "in-between," and progress toward their aspirations was often complicated by past experiences of trauma, current experiences of exclusion, coping with substances, and the mismatch between their needs and available services"--
