In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor, award-winning author Dorinda Nicholson is releasing her book "Pearl Harbor Child" in ebook! Years ago, I was told by a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivor's Association that I was too young to remember the attack, and I couldn't have been a civilian survivor of Pearl because, "there were no civilians, much less children, living inside the Harbor." He was wrong. I was there with my family, not on a burning ship, but close enough to see the burning ships anchored near our home. Today, I still vividly remember watching the attack, I vividly remember the events, and I still remember his doubting comments. At first, I felt discounted and hurt by his skepticism. But now I am grateful. Grateful that it prompted me to ask lots of questions, do some research, and then write Pearl Harbor Child. His doubting comment encouraged me to search for books, memoirs, and articles that might support the fact that civilians did indeed live in Pearl. When I couldn't find any, I began to doubt myself. The evidence that there was a neighborhood of civilians on the Pearl City Peninsula unexpectedly surfaced on a map taken from the dead body of a Japanese mini-submarine pilot. His map targeted the position of each ship in the harbor, and also detailed something else: the streets of our small civilian community on the peninsula, including Jean Street, where we lived and where I grew up. December 7, 1941 is "a date that will live in infamy," according to President Roosevelt's famous speech. And for me, and thousands of others, it's true. Each year on that date, my thoughts always turn back to that incredible Sunday when bombs fell on Pearl Harbor.

This book, first published in 1984, examines the lifetime of Georges Cuvier, and in his constant and varying struggles to retain his position both as a politician and as a leading naturalist we find displayed almost all of the political tensions of Restoration France. Our understanding of the new French intellectual elite is enhanced if we can explain what sort of power this group wielded, and how it related to the structure of politics as a whole. Cuvier’s career epitomises this relationship to the highest degree. Examination of the building of his career under the Directory and Empire offers many new insights into the way the expanding market for science, the restructuring of society as a whole, and the moral authority of science itself could be utilised as resources in the making of a reputation. The influence of scientific competition and controversy on Cuvier’s scientific work is examined at length, and it is argued that they exerted a decisive effect on the structure of his biological and geological thinking.

William Rimmer (1816–1879) is arguably the first modernist American sculptor, although his inventive originality has not been fully acknowledged. Rimmer cultivated an art of ideas and personal expression whilst supporting himself as a physician and, later, as a teacher of art anatomy at the Cooper Union School of Design for Women in New York. Unlike his contemporaries, he advocated the creation of sculpture drawn entirely from the artist’s imagination, as opposed to antique archetypes or live models. In this way, he sought to reframe excellence in American art as something that must be found within, rather than derived from Europe. In this new monograph, the meaning of Rimmer’s works is for the first time considered from a combination of perspectives, such as close visual analysis (including X-ray and infrared), historical documentation, and social context. These are enriched with discussion of the artist’s own bipolar disorder, deeply-held spiritualism, and views on gender equality—considering women just as talented as men, he used naked male models in all-female classes long before his contemporaries, and produced an allegorical sculpture of fighting lions that criticized the tyranny of men over women. This book will be of great interest to academics, students, art museums, collectors, dealers, art historians, and members of the public with an affinity for Rimmer’s work. It will also appeal to those with a broader interest in American culture.
