A captivating first-person story of a real-life orca rescue! When a young orca was spotted alone in Puget Sound, no one knew where she’d come from, but they knew it was dangerous for her to be left there alone. Scientists and researchers from two countries had to work together to determine where the orca came from, and then to decide how to save her. The riveting story is told by Donna Sandstrom, a citizen volunteer with the rescue effort. From identifying the orca as a missing calf named Springer, to transporting her to the north end of Vancouver Island, where she was reunited with her family, this book gives readers behind-the-scenes details on the only successful orca rescue and reunion ever! Kids will be thrilled to be part of the mission, when a little lost orca is brought home!
Focused on fully discussing what is considered to be "good" research, Research and Evaluation in Education and Psychology explains quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods, and incorporates the viewpoints of various research paradigms into its descriptions of these methods. The work covers four major paradigms: postpositivist, constructivist, transformative, and pragmatic. Special emphasis is provided on conducting research in culturally complex communities, based on the perspectives of feminists, ethnic/racial minorities, and people with disabilities. In each chapter, Donna M. Mertens carefully explains a step of the research process, from the literature review to analysis and reporting. Additionally, she includes a sample study and abstract in each chapter to illustrate the concepts discussed in that section of the book. “A lucid guide to energy psychology that demonstrates techniques and procedures that can bring about remarkably rapid changes in the way people feel and move through the world.” —Bessel van der Kolk, MD, #1 New York Times nonfiction bestselling author of The Body Keeps the Score What if the answer to what’s holding you back was at your very fingertips? That’s exactly the solution presented in Tapping. We all face a range of issues in common areas of life, from worry, depression, and trauma to self-defeating habits, addictions, and relationships. Thankfully, Tapping is an accessible and authoritative new work that offers a vibrant response to the psychological and spiritual trials presented by a world in unprecedented distress. Renowned clinical psychologist Dr. David Feinstein, along with the world’s most sought-after expert on energy medicine, Donna Eden, promise: “Whether the emotional issue at hand is caused by stress or anxiety, physical ailments, aging, the pressures of parenting, work, or staying centered and grounded in this world, we offer a framework and a set of tools to help you show up at your best.” Tapping energy points on the skin while bringing problems and goals to mind changes the brain in ways that help to overcome those challenges and support those aspirations. This stimulating practice places an astonishingly effective tool into your hands, quite literally. Emerging from time-honored healing traditions, the procedure signals your nervous system to reduce fear, anger, stress, and grief while activating brain regions involved with problem-solving and managing emotions—to help you find inner balance and take charge of the internal models that govern your life. As cultural historian Dr. Jean Houston declares in her foreword, this “is a stunning call to action at a time of desperate personal and collective need.” Created for everyday and professional readers alike, here is an unprecedented resource for self-care and personal growth. Through their extensive research and field-tested refinements on this method, Eden and Feinstein combine the scientifically validated effectiveness of tapping with the best practices of psychotherapy, helping you move forward to a healthier and happier life.
In today's world of mega-stores and unbridled materialism, people are spending more money than ever in an attempt to find fulfillment in themselves-and children are no exception. In her compelling and inspiring exploration of kids and consumerism, Donna Bee-Gates helps us all understand how a culture of instant gratification influences spending habits and erodes self-worth. She argues that placating kids with material rewards is detrimental to social and psychological development. Similarly, she reveals that kids often seek out material goods as emotional compensation and fall prey to corporate strategies that lure them in as loyal consumers at an early age. Bee-Gates brings together cutting-edge research and interviews to show that a healthy childhood sometimes means a simpler one--one that values good communication and interaction with peers and family. She highlights strategies to counter materialism and foster stronger identities in our children as they navigate a complex world, and discusses ways that we can help build self-awareness in children and encourage skills that will help them become adults with strong character and integrity.
The authors analyze the impact of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and SEC regulations regarding selective disclosure and insider trading.

The third edition of Psychiatric Care of the Medical Patient brings a classic reference text into the twenty-first century. It combines critical scholarship with the voice of expert clinicians who work at the interface of psychiatry with medical specialties. It is meant to be read for pleasure as well as consulted as a reference. The editors have worked with the authors to bring a consistent perspective to the book - one that sees the medical psychiatrist as an agent for bringing a more comprehensive perspective to medical care. Even seasoned and knowledgeable practitioners will find much that is new to them in this book. The volume covers topics in depth that other books in the field may not cover at all, such as the use of herbal and nutritional therapies for medical-psychiatric symptoms and syndromes, and the choice of questionnaires to supplement history-taking. It looks at old topics in a new way: The chapter on the physical examination applies psychometric considerations to the Babinski sign, describes the method and application of quantitative bedside olfactory testing, and discusses smartphone apps to improve the sensitivity of the examination. Psychiatric Care of the Medical Patient, 3rd Edition provides concepts and information to facilitate the dialogue between psychiatrists and general medical specialists - minimizing psychiatric jargon and speaking in the common language of caring and curious physicians.

This study had a research purpose and a pedagogical purpose. Research disclosed the dynamic, changing nature of (learner-internal and learner-external) variables that influence strategic competence for developing EFL/ESL writers. This competence was found necessary for international graduate students to move from writer-centered learning to reader-centered communication. The research instruments proved to be practical tools for guiding learners' processes of learning and writing a scholarly paper or article and avoiding plagiarism. The implication for teachers and program administrators is a systematic approach for developing self-regulation (control) in EFL/ESL writing. The first part of the book reports on the mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative) research. The second part gives an in-depth report of the 6 cases used in the research. The third part presents tools for systematically developing self-regulation in scholarly (and academic) writing with (a) student and teacher checklists for formative assessment that are valid and reliable; and (b) a model syllabus for teachers that can be adapted across disciplines and genres. These tools deal with learning strategies and their applications to writing and writing instruction.
