In “Our Toes Are Alike ” (Balgaragi dalmattda, 1932), Kim deploys his skills as a satirist and sardonic social commentator within a framework of literary naturalism. Here the first-person narrator contemplates the life of his friend “M,” whose debauched sexual adventuring has likely left him sterile. Though the text provides a window into the underlying patriarchal misogyny of the period, the narrator’s incisive portrait of the self-deception that M experiences when his wife unexpectedly becomes pregnant have a larger human resonance. The work also leaves an interesting footnote in Korean literary history: it created a rift between Kim and noted fellow author Yŏm Sang-seop, who believed that the plot had been based upon rumors about his own life.
This book explores practical and theoretical approaches to translation in Korea from the 16th century onwards, examining a variety of translations done in Korea from a diachronic perspective. Offering a discussion of the methodology for translating the Xiaoxue (Lesser or Elementary Learning), a primary textbook for Confucianism in China and other East Asian countries, the book considers the problems involving Korean Bible translation in general and the Term Question in particular. It examines James Scarth Gale, an early Canadian Protestant missionary to Korea, as one of the language’s remarkable translators. The book additionally compares three English versions of the Korean Declaration of Independence of 1919, arguing that the significant differences between them are due both to the translators’ political vision for an independent Korea as well as to their careers and Weltanschauungen. The book concludes with a detailed analysis of Deborah Smith’s English translation of ‘The Vegetarian’ by Han Kang, which won the 2016 Man Booker International Prize for Fiction.
This book explores Korean literature from a broadly global perspective from the mid-9th century to the present, with special emphasis on how it has been influenced by, as well as it has influenced, literatures of other nations. Beginning with the Korean version of the King Midas and his ass’s ears tale in the Silla dynasty, it moves on to discuss Ewa, what might be called the first missionary novel about Korea written by a Western missionary W. Arthur Noble. The book also considers the extent to which in writing fiction and essays Jack London gained grist for his writing from his experience in Korea as a Russo-Japanese War correspondent. In addition, the book explores how modern Korean poetry, fiction, and drama, despite differences in time and space, have actively engaged with Western counterparts. Based on World Literature, which has gained slow but prominent popularity all over the world, this book argues that Korean literature deserves to be part of the Commonwealth of Letters.
Offering an alternative discourse on modernization and development viewed specifically from the East Asia perspective, this book focuses its analysis on the Korean experience of modernization and development. It considers the broad range of societal transformations which have occurred over the past half century, utilizing the vernacular language of Korea extracted from everyday life to interpret, characterize, globalize and pedagogically broaden the understanding and the human meaning behind these complex social changes.
In recent decades, Korean communication and media have substantially grown to become some of the most significant segments of Korean society. Since the early 1990s, Korea has experienced several distinctive changes in its politics, economy, and technology, which are directly related to the development of local media and culture. Korea has greatly developed several cutting-edge technologies, such as smartphones, video games, and mobile instant messengers to become the most networked society throughout the world. As the Korean Wave exemplifies, the once small and peripheral Korea has also created several unique local popular cultures, including television programs, movies, and popular music, known as K-pop, and these products have penetrated many parts of the world. As Korean media and popular culture have rapidly grown, the number of media scholars and topics covering these areas in academic discourses has increased. These scholars’ interests have expanded from traditional media, such as Korean journalism and cinema, to several new cutting-edge areas, like digital technologies, health communication, and LGBT-related issues. In celebrating the Korean American Communication Association’s fortieth anniversary in 2018, this book documents and historicizes the growth of growing scholarship in the realm of Korean media and communication.
This cutting edge work offers an alternative perspective on existing paradigms of modernization and development that originated in the West from the vantage point of non-western, late-modernizing societies. It considers how East Asian philosophical ideas enrich the reformulation of the concept of development or societal development, and how influential principles of traditional culture such as yin-yang dialectic interact with modern ideas and technology. It addresses the significance of alternative discourses as culturally independent scholarship, and the problems of pervasive mechanisms of social, political, economic, and cultural dependence in the global academic world.

This book emerged out of a collaborative research project entitled “Global Applications of the Korean Development Models in the Information and Communication Industry.” From September 2015 to August 2020, scholars with expertise in industrial and regional sociology, media and cultural studies, and science and technology policy participated in the project. The goal was to explore cases related to the information and communications technology (ICT) industry in South Korea, analyze factors that have contributed to its successful and/or unsuccessful experiences, and carry out comparisons with those of other nations. This book introduces five topics relevant to ICT innovation in Korean society. While chapters 1, 2, and 3 focus on South Korea’s ICT and media industries, chapters 4 and 5 extend our view by offering relevant topics in the context of the globalized media environment and culture. In chapter 1, Joon-Shik Park takes a close look at the role of the ICT industry in relation to South Korea’s economic and social development. He suggests that innovation in this industry has enabled the country to climb up the ladder of success, and discusses in detail the necessary conditions for further advancement. As examples of innovative ecosystems, industrial areas in Korea such as Teheran Valley and the Pangyo ICT cluster as well as the companies Naver, Daum, and Kakao are introduced for their contribution to the new industrial ecosystem. In chapter 2, Kyung-Hee Kim and Juhyun Hong provide an analysis of the diffusion process of content that enables users to exchange information and share experiences through interactions via social media. With the goal of identifying the different roles played by the Korean government, media users, industry professionals, and communication technologies, they interviewed 12 experts who spent most of their career in the ICT industry. In this chapter, they provide an explanation of the positive roles (i.e., media users, industry professionals, communication technologies) and negative roles (i.e., the government) played by each involved actor. In chapter 3, Sun Ho Jeong examines the progress of digital news innovation in South Korea and provides an outlook. Although emerging technologies have brought about positive changes to Korean society, they have also led to disruptive experiences for the journalism industry in particular. Approaching the subject matter from the perspectives of the industry and academia, she provides a brief introduction of the history and characteristics of digital news in South Korea, followed by challenges and opportunities experienced by news organizations in the 2010s, and a discussion on journalism innovation for the 2020s. The chapter concludes with final remarks for future directions. In chapter 4, Shin Dong Kim presents a discussion on the factors contributing to the worldwide success of Korean media and pop culture. Kim’s close inspection of the domestic factors (i.e., expansion of the television market, accumulation of program production technologies and skills, and a new generation of creators and consumers of media), and global factors (i.e., geopolitics of East Asian countries in relation to the development of cultural industries) that are identified as contributors to the Korean Wave furthers our understanding of the historical context of the phenomenon. The chapter also provides an opportunity to think about its implications for Korean people. Chapter 5 examines communities of foreign brides in South Korea, where social media is utilized for empowerment of migrant minorities. For this study, Dominique Nduhura, Shin Dong Kim, and Nadine Mumporeze conducted interviews and focus group discussions with 40 foreign brides from Vietnam, the Philippines, and Cambodia who are currently residing in South Korea. Findings suggest that their experiences with social media are largely favorable (i.e., connectedness, cathartic role, mutual education, advocacy, business platform, body celebration, political participation, access to services, etc.), while some mishaps from such use persist.

This book provides real stories about the South Korean semiconductor community. It explores the lives and careers of six influential semiconductor engineers who all studied at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) under the mentorship of Dr. Kim Choong-Ki, the most influential semiconductor professor in South Korea during the last quarter of the twentieth century. Kim’s students became known as “Kim’s Mafia” because of the important positions they went on to hold in industry, government, and academia. Spanning the 19th and 20th centuries and identifying multiple waves of modernization, this book illustrates how principles originating in Chinese Confucianism have impacted the modernization of East Asia, especially in Korea. It also analyzes how such principles are exercised at personal, interpersonal and organizational levels. As modernization unfolds in East Asia, there is a rising interest in tradition of Confucianism and reconsider the relevance of Confucianism to global development. This book details how Western Buddhist feminists find that, after recuperating women’s equivalent rights and identities, both religious men and women need to meditate to achieve the emptiness of gender ego—gender privilege and prejudice—which then leads to awakening and enlightenment from ignorance. To apply such skills in Christian theology, gender justice comes from spiritual equality and courage—awakening and repentance—in their contemplative and meditative lives. This book suggests that, for women’s spiritual and real liberation and happiness, both inner trainings and external social actions have to go together.
