In 1946, with its own minister for the first time, the Department of External Affairs embarked on a period of impressive growth and assumed responsibility for a broader range of foreign policy issues than ever before. Under the expert guidance of Lester Pearson, for a decade the department enjoyed popular and parliamentary consensus about international interests. The election of the Diefenbaker government in 1957 deprived the department of Pearson's experienced ministerial direction and exposed it to new priorities and new ways of doing things. At this time foreign policy consensus began to erode. As well, there was pressure to respond to the administrative revolution inaugurated by the Royal Commission on Government Organization (the Glassco Commission) appointed in 1960. After Pearson returned to office as prime minister in 1963, questioning by the public, and also by the governing party and the cabinet, became more fervent. Coming of Age concludes in 1968 as indications of a challenge to the principles underlying Canadian foreign policy emerged from a new generation of ministers, a challenge that would produce major changes after Pierre Trudeau became prime minister.

Upon arrival at Pictou, after an appalling storm-tossed crossing, they found they had been deceived. The promised prime farming land turned out to be virgin forest. Only the kindness of the Mi’kmaq and the few New Englanders already settled there enabled them to survive until they learned how to exploit the forests and clear land. But survive they did, and their prosperity encouraged shiploads of emigrants, many fellow clansmen, to join them, making northeastern Nova Scotia a true New Scotland.

Being a minority in a predominately white school, the administration told my mother, that based on my attitude, that I would be retained at some point in life and that the earlier, the better. I set out to have a universal understanding of all subjects. I came to the understanding that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link and tried to master all courses of the educational institutions in America. This base filtered into my social life. I wanted to be all I could be. By the twelfth grade the community created an award, ‘The Black Educators N.A.S.D. Award’ (the first and only time it was presented). Also in the twelfth grade I had excelled in sports to where I anchored the fastest mile relay team in the country and had found my wife to be (the greatest love story ever told). This book is the development of a child based on this incident, which has led me to a life time marriage with my wife (the cheerleader), training with and coaching world record holders and Olympic Champions, obtaining degrees and educational experiences from all parts of America, employment with one of the top ten companies in the world and involvement in Civil Rights that led to an invitation to the White House. It is also and most of all, a Testimony of how God delivered me through a heart transplant operation. Please enjoy as you read. The Author

Nearly forty years ago, Sir Lewis Namier's studies showed that there were no organized national political parties in England during the middle of the eighteenth century, and historians have assumed that much the same statement could be made about het period from 1780's to the 1830's. Professor Ginter questions that assumption, and demonstrates that the origins of modern British electoral organization and political parties can be dated at about the end of the American War. The papers of William Adam at Blair Adam reveal that the tone and techniques of opposition politics began to undergo a fundamental change during the 1780's. In these years the Whig Opposition was unified under the leadership of the Duke of Portland and Chales James Fox, and it developed a surprisingly extensive political orientation. The party broke out of the restrictive parliamentary orientation that had heretofore characterize opposition politics and turned ot the country a large for support of its program and personnel. By 1790 British general elections were no longer contested exclusively by individuals and ad hoc committees, Adam, the party's political manager, in collaboration with the Duke of Portland, directed the general election campaign of 1790 from offices in Burlington House, and sent party agents and funds into those constituencies in which candidates had decided to stand a contest, but also expended funds in an effort to secure new seats for party members unable to find a likely constituency through their own efforts. The present volume, a selection from the family papers at Blair Adam, fully demonstrates the extent and quality fo the electoral organization of the Whig Opposition. Ever since its discovery in 1742 the carotid body has remained an organ of mystery. Originally described as a ganglion, it was subsequently regarded as a gland, chromaffin paraganglion and non-chromaffin paraganglion. In 1928 it was shown to be a chemoreceptor with close associations with the function of baroreception in the adjacent carotid sinus and perhaps within its own substance. These discoveries led physiologists to embark on a series of elegant experimental studies on a number of animal species which have, however, so far failed to identify the transducer for detection of changes in tension of arterial blood gases or the mechanism of chemor eception. Pathologists on the other hand have largely ignored the carotid body, restricting their interest to its tumour, the chemodectoma. A remarkable disparity in knowledge of the organ has resulted, with most information being available on the physiology of chemoreceptor tissue in laboratory animals. In contrast, there has been sparse interest and awareness of the pathology in man of this nodule of tissue lying in the carotid bifurcation whose functional activity is suggested by the high blood flow it receives, and its rich content of biogenic amines and a wide variety of peptides. This book is an attempt to redress this unsatisfactory situation. During the last few years our understanding of the detailed histology and ultrastructure of the human carotid body has improved.
