The American Civil War did not end at Appomattox with Generals Grant and Lee. It ended in a small farmhouse outside Durham, North Carolina with Generals Sherman and Johnston. The SHERMAN QUARTET is a rich saga of the last four winter months of that war and the people who survived it or died trying.
This book is called 100 First Pages because that's what it is. Each page in the book is 'supposed' to be the first page of a novel. Next to that page, on the left, are my comments about how the novel might go, along with some of my personal thoughts on the 'subject'. That's the best part, because it is a mini-encyclopedia, almanac, journal and, to some extent, a blog. The book covers a large array of topics and genres. When you buy the book and read it, you can go to my website listed in the back and vote for your favorite BEGINNING. You can also suggest a title for the book. I promise that I will write the novel which receives the most votes for publication AND if you are the person who suggests the Best Title, i.e. the one I will use, you will get a cover credit, an entire page inside to write anything you like and one dollar for every copy sold! Check out the preview and give it a try.
If war is 'hell', as Sherman wrote, then it is also theater. The stage may be a burning city, tough country hedgerows or wide, bloody beaches. It may be soft green fields, mud-filled trenches or clear skies streaked with the lovely contrails of men above trying to kill other men as they fly. But ever since the time of Homer, only the props and costumes have changed. Although it is the 'people' who concern us most, the 'theater' provides a most dramatic and, in fact, little known backdrop. The last four months of the Civil War has been called the most critical and important months in American history: "There probably never was a month so full of peril, so packed with action, so frightened with significance, as April, 1865." A CATHEDRAL IN HELL is the second novel in the four volume series, TILL THEY BEG FOR MERCY. Volume III, DESPERATE BATTLE, will be available in September, 2012.
This book provides a detailed treatment of radiation effects in electronic devices, including effects at the material, device, and circuit levels. The emphasis is on transient effects caused by single ionizing particles (single-event effects and soft errors) and effects produced by the cumulative energy deposited by the radiation (total ionizing dose effects). Bipolar (Si and SiGe), metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS), and compound semi-conductor technologies are discussed. In addition to considering the specific issues associated with high-performance devices and technologies, the book includes the background material necessary for understanding radiation effects at a more general level.
