His first bush flying was in an RCAF Norseman during the war years, and he went on to become one of the best known and most respected Canadian Arctic bush pilots of his time. He joined with Max Ward in getting Wardair off the ground as a small charter operation out of Yellowknife in the 1950's. While Max grew Wardair into one of the world's premier charter airlines, Don preferred the cockpit and the North. His stories of close calls and life in the North always spoke his mind, and this handsome book does no less. The Artic Fox, as he was known in the North, was superbly resourceful, bailing himself out of tight situations almost daily in his days of High Arctic flying. The ability, discussed in chapter one, to generate a fivefold change in plant height by overexpression of a single gene for the photoreceptor phytochrome heralds not only a new phase in plant photobiology but also highlights the close relationship between fundamental knowledge and commercial application. Other chapters review progress in our understanding of the molecular basis of hormone action and processes such as tuber development, seed protein synthesis and deposition, fruit ripening, and self-recognition during pollination. The successful uses of antisense genes to alter the colour and pattern of flowers and to change the enzymic composition of ripening fruit are also discussed, together with identification and down regulation of a gene involved in ethylene synthesis by antisense technology. Opportunities are considered for altering the composition and quality of harvested plant organs and for using plants to synthesise novel products.

This book lists the first landowners who recorded land claims beginning in 1784 in what became Greene County, Pennsylvania. Prior to that time the settler claimed his land by marking its boundary with blazed trees or other significant landmarks. A claim was only as secure as the settler's ability to enforce it by barter or force of arms. When an accurate survey of his land could be established by the Mason-Dixon survey, each landowner rushed to the County Land Office to obtain a surveyed plat of his claim. Those surveyed plats are listed in this book along with the person to whom they later sold their land.
