In 2003, a cadre of researchers set out to determine what combination of supplemental or natural nutrition and white-tailed deer population density would produce the largest antlers on bucks without harming vegetation. They would come to call this combination “the sweet spot.” Over the course of their 15-year experiment, conducted through the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute at Texas A&M University–Kingsville, Timothy E. Fulbright, Charles A. DeYoung, David G. Hewitt, Don A. Draeger, and 25 graduate students tracked the effects of deer density and enhanced versus natural nutrition on vegetation conditions. Through wet years and dry, in a semiarid environment with frequent droughts, they observed deer nutrition and food habits and analyzed population dynamics. Containing the results of this landmark, longitudinal study, in keeping with the Kleberg Institute’s mission, this volume provides science-based information for enhancing the conservation and management of Texas wildlife. Advanced White-Tailed Deer Management: The Nutrition–Population Density Sweet Spot presents this critical research for the first time as a reference for hunters, landowners, wildlife managers, and all those who work closely with white-tailed deer populations. It explains the findings of the Comanche-Faith Project and the implications of these findings for white-tailed deer ecology and management throughout the range of the species with the goal of improving management.

In the summer of 1943, while a U. S. Army sergeant stationed in Hamadan, Iran, Ed Davis became friends with some local Kurd tribesman (or Lourd, in Davis's original account), who told him of Noah's ark on Mount Ararat. The ark and items from it were considered holy relics, generally kept from outsiders, but the patriarch's friendship with Davis made him an exception. They showed him items from the ark, including a cage door, latches, and shepherd staffs. All the wooden items were described as petrified. Tribal leader Abas-Abas and seven of his sons led Davis up the northeast side of Ararat, but bad weather prevented getting closer than half a mile to the ark. But Davis did see it; it was broken into three or four pieces, of which Davis saw two; the nearer had at least three floors. Abas-Abas supplied other details. The living space for people is at the top; the ark's door was hinged at the top; construction was done with wooden pegs. Dr. Don Shockey received his B.A. in anthropology from the university of New Mexico and his O.D. from Pacific University College of Optometry, Forest Grove, Oregon. Dr. Shockey taught science in the public schools at Taos, New Mexico, and was an anthropology instructor at the Taos branch of the University of New Mexico. He is co-founder and co-owner of the Governor Bent Museum in Taos, and founder and president of the Foundation for International Biblical Exploration and Research (F.I.B.E.R.) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Dr. Shockey has lectured widely throughout the western states and has made many television appearances. He was a member of the 1984 expedition on Mount Ararat searching for evidence of the Ark of Noah. The expedition was filmed by Turkish National Television.

I took the TV remote with me just in case I had to make a cell phone call. Nancy made fun of me, and I tried to use the mute button on her, but it didn't work. On his 37th Anniversary: "We returned home and wandered off to bed at 10:00. Nancy donned her "Born to Sleep" PJs and I was asleep before my head hit the pillow. When we were newly married this is not the way we would have anticipated our 37th anniversary ending, but in 2004 it was just fine. So much for romance. It's still there; it's just different. On fasting: Fasting is a fundamental Christian practice, and it is mentioned 33 times in the Bible. Now, let me ask a question. When was the last time you heard a sermon on the subject of fasting? You'll hear a hundred sermons on eschatology, a thousand on tithing or how many angels you can stack on the head of a pin before a preacher will suggest a Christian forego his or her staple of donuts, fried chicken or baked beans. Actually, I don't mind fasting; it's just the hunger I object to. On remodeling the house: "What on earth do we need a new toilet for?" I protested. Nancy's response was: "The old toilet was the wrong shade of white." The wrong shade of white?! You got to be kidding me! Our 401K is in the toilet due to the economy, and now I'm spending my kid's inheritance replacing a toilet that is the improper shade of white!!
