At the same time, closely related theories have had a similar rapid development, for example the qualitative theory of differential equations in the complex domain. The meeting, ``Etat de la recherche'', held at Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon, presented the current state of the art in this area, emphasizing the unity linking the various sub-domains. This volume contains four survey articles corresponding to the talks presented at this meeting. D. Cerveau describes the structure of polynomial differential equations in the complex plane, focusing on the local analysis in neighborhoods of singular points. E. Ghys surveys the theory of laminations by Riemann surfaces which occur in many dynamical or geometrical situations. N. Sibony describes the present state of the generalization of the Fatou-Julia theory for polynomial or rational maps in two or more complex dimensions. Lastly, the talk by J.-C. Yoccoz, written by M. Flexor, considers polynomials of degree $2$ in one complex variable, and in particular, with the hyperbolic properties of these polynomials centered around the Jakobson theorem. This is a general introduction that gives a basic history of holomorphic dynamical systems, demonstrating the numerous and fruitful interactions among the topics. In the spirit of the ``Etat de la recherche de la SMF'' meetings, the articles are written for a broad mathematical audience, especially students or mathematicians working in different fields. This book clarifies the interrelationship between optics, vision and perspective before the Classical Age, examining binocularity in particular. The author shows how binocular vision was one of the key juncture points between the three concepts and readers will see how important it is to understand the approach that scholars once took. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the concept of Perspectiva – the Latin word for optics – encompassed many areas of enquiry that had been viewed since antiquity as interconnected, but which afterwards were separated: optics was incorporated into the field of physics (i.e., physical and geometrical optics), vision came to be regarded as the sum of various psycho-physiological mechanisms involved in the way the eye operates (i.e., physiological optics and psychology of vision) and the word ‘perspective’ was reserved for the mathematical representation of the external world (i.e., linear perspective). The author shows how this division, which emerged as a result of the spread of the sciences in classical Europe, turns out to be an anachronism if we confront certain facts from the immediately preceding periods. It is essential to take into account the way medieval scholars posed the problem – which included all facets of the Latin word perspectiva – when exploring the events of this period. This book will appeal to a broad readership, from philosophers and historians of science, to those working in geometry, optics, ophthalmology and architecture.

Despite the wide variety of subjects, critical positions, and authors' backgrounds, what these essays have in common is the willingness of the contributors to go beyond a set of rhetorics, a set of limitations that were a defining moment in the struggle of gay liberation, and its reflection in both creative and critical writing.

However, during the first half of the last century, they succumbed to the charm of axiomatization: Hence, economics remains a stillborn science. Its theory is plagued with incongruities, generating misleading notions and policies that are detrimental to human welfare and environmental equilibrium. Its truths have significantly low half-lives, and its confused pronouncements have become an open ground in which false consciousness rumble unchallenged. This state of affairs calls for a fundamental revision. After reviewing the evolution of economics from Antiquity to the present and pointing to its inadequacies, Dominique proposes an alternative formulation which not only sheds light on the enduring features of market economics but also makes economics consistent with physics, the mother of all sciences.
