Heterogeneous systems on chip (HeSoCs) combine general-purpose, feature-rich multi-core host processors with domain-specific programmable many-core accelerators (PMCAs) to unite versatility with energy efficiency and peak performance. By virtue of their heterogeneity, HeSoCs hold the promise of increasing performance and energy efficiency compared to homogeneous multiprocessors, because applications can be executed on hardware that is designed for them. However, this heterogeneity also increases system complexity substantially. This thesis presents the first research platform for HeSoCs where all components, from accelerator cores to application programming interface, are available under permissive open-source licenses. We begin by identifying the hardware and software components that are required in HeSoCs and by designing a representative hardware and software architecture. We then design, implement, and evaluate four critical HeSoC components that have not been discussed in research at the level required for an open-source implementation: First, we present a modular, topology-agnostic, high-performance on-chip communication platform, which adheres to a state-of-the-art industry-standard protocol. We show that the platform can be used to build high-bandwidth (e.g., 2.5 GHz and 1024 bit data width) end-to-end communication fabrics with high degrees of concurrency (e.g., up to 256 independent concurrent transactions). Second, we present a modular and efficient solution for implementing atomic memory operations in highly-scalable many-core processors, which demonstrates near-optimal linear throughput scaling for various synthetic and real-world workloads and requires only 0.5 kGE per core. Third, we present a hardware-software solution for shared virtual memory that avoids the majority of translation lookaside buffer misses with prefetching, supports parallel burst transfers without additional buffers, and can be scaled with the workload and number of parallel processors. Our work improves accelerator performance for memory-intensive kernels by up to 4×. Fourth, we present a software toolchain for mixed-data-model heterogeneous compilation and OpenMP offloading. Our work enables transparent memory sharing between a 64-bit host processor and a 32-bit accelerator at overheads below 0.7 % compared to 32-bit-only execution. Finally, we combine our contributions to a research platform for state-of-the-art HeSoCs and demonstrate its performance and flexibility.
Medical modelling and the principles of medical imaging, Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Rapid Prototyping (also known as Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing) are important techniques relating to various disciplines - from biomaterials engineering to surgery. Building on the success of the first edition, Medical Modelling: The application of Advanced Design and Rapid Prototyping techniques in medicine provides readers with a revised edition of the original text, along with key information on innovative imaging techniques, Rapid Prototyping technologies and case studies.Following an overview of medical imaging for Rapid Prototyping, the book goes on to discuss working with medical scan data and techniques for Rapid Prototyping. In this second edition there is an extensive section of peer-reviewed case studies, describing the practical applications of advanced design technologies in surgical, prosthetic, orthotic, dental and research applications. - Covers the steps towards rapid prototyping, from conception (modelling) to manufacture (manufacture) - Includes a comprehensive case studies section on the practical application of computer-aided design (CAD) and rapid prototyping (RP) - Provides an insight into medical imaging for rapid prototyping and working with medical scan data
Computational Modelling and Simulation of Aircraft and the Environment An in-depth discussion of aircraft dynamics modelling and simulation This book provides a comprehensive guide to modelling and simulation from basic physical and mathematical principles, giving the reader sufficient information to be able to build computational models of aircraft for the purposes of simulation and evaluation. Highly relevant to practitioners, it takes into account the multi-disciplinary nature of aerospace products and the integrated nature of the models needed in order to represent them. Volume 1- Platform Kinematics and Synthetic Environment focused on the modelling of a synthetic environment in which aircraft operate and its spatial relationship with vehicles that are situated and moving within it. This volume focuses on the modelling of aircraft and the interpretation of their flight dynamics. Key features: Includes chapters on equations of motion, fixed-wing aerodynamics, longitudinal flight and gas turbines, as well as an opening chapter that presents an overview of flight modelling and a concluding chapter that presents a number of additional topics such as aircraft structures and embedded systems. Serves as both a student text and practitioner reference. Follows on from previous Aerospace Series titles, offering a complementary view of vehicles and systems from the perspectives of mathematics, physics and simulation. This book offers a comprehensive guide for senior, graduate and postgraduate students of aerospace engineering as well as professional engineers involved in the modelling and simulation of aircraft.
The relationship between literature & the state is examined in this discussion of Francophone African literature. Dominic Thomas considers the case of the Congo, where the recent transition to democracy was in part inspired by the works of Sony Labou Tansi, Henri Lopes, & Emmanuel Dongala among others.
