This book presents the results of extensive research on the mathematical modelling of the blast furnace process. It describes the mathematical models utilised, providing insights into two-dimensional models of gas dynamics, heat transfer and reduction, the cohesion zone, and the balance equilibrium model. On the basis of these models, it details a method for the analytical study of the blast-furnace process, which essentially complements the experimental methods used in practice. Examples of the solution of practical problems of blast furnace smelting are also provided, and the mathematical models highlighted here can be used in research and design institutes, at metallurgical enterprises and for higher education institutions in the training of students in metallurgical specialties.

This volume serves as an introduction to modern magnetotellurics originating with the pioneering work of Tikhonov and Cagniard. It presents a comprehensive summary of theoretical and methodological aspects of magnetotellurics. It provides a bridge between textbooks on electrical prospecting and numerous papers on magnetotelluric methods scattered among various geophysical journals and collections. The book has been written in the terms of the theory of ill-posed problems and contains a special chapter encouraging readers to master the elements of this theory that defines the philosophy of the physical experiment. The book thus offers the connected and consistent account of the principles of magnetotellurics from that single viewpoint. The book also brings together developments from many sources and involves some little-known results developed in Russia in Tikhonov's magnetotellurics school. Of particular interest are concluding chapters of the book that demonstrate the potential of magnetotellurics in oil and gas surveys, including discovery of the Urengoy gas field in Western Siberia, one of the largest gas fields in the world. This potential also is revealed in studies of the earth's crust and upper mantle.
Magnetotellurics is finding increasing applications for imaging electrically conductive structures below the Earth`s surface - in both industrial and academic research projects. In this book the authors provide a systematic approach to understanding the modern theory of ill-posed problems which is essential to making confident meaningful interpretations of magnetotelluric and magnetovariational soundings. The interpretation is conducted in an interactive way.
Four years ago when we had finished our work on the first edition of our Handbook we didn't even suppose that three years later it would become necessary to greatly revise and update the material. It happened because of the following developments. 1. The invention and tremendous development of modern nonlinear optical crystals such as BBO, LBO, KTP, ZnGeP , etc. 2 2. Rapid progress in laser techniques (femtosecond CPM laser, Ti: sapphire laser, diode-pumped solid-state lasers, etc.). 3. The appearence of numerous organic crystals which can be synthesized with predictable properties. 4. Progress in the theory of nonlinear frequency conversion utilizing biaxial crystals, femtosecond pulses, etc. 5. Accumulation of new data on the properties of nonlinear optical crystals. In accordance with the above, we have made many changes in the text. The first chapter was revised by D.N. Nikogosyan, the second one by V.G. Dmitriev and D.N. Nikogosyan, and the fourth one by G.G. Gurzadyan. The third chapter, containing the main reference material on 77 nonlinear optical crystals was completely rewritten and updated by D.N. Nikogosyan. The Appendix containing the list of most commonly used laser wavelengths was compiled by D.N. Nikogosyan. We would appreciate any valuable comments and recommendations that will allow us to further improve the Handbook. We would like to thank H.K.V. Lotsch for fruitful and long-lasting cooperation.
Biological O2 sensing probes and measurement techniques were first introduced in the late 80s. In the last 3-5 years they have undergone major development that have made them available and affordable for a broad range of applications in various disciplines of the life and biomedical sciences. These new chemistries and technologies, which are significantly different from the majority of other fluorescence-based probes and detection techniques, have already demonstrated their high utility. This book will provide a systematic overview of the existing and emerging O2 sensing technologies in their different modifications, a practical guide to their rational selection and use, and examples of biological applications/case studies, including details on how to set up and conduct such experiments, troubleshoot and interpret the data.
This book deals with the phenomenological theory of first-order structural phase transitions, with a special emphasis on reconstructive transformations in which a group-subgroup relationship between the symmetries of the phases is absent. It starts with a unified presentation of the current approach to first-order phase transitions, using the more recent results of the Landau theory of phase transitions and of the theory of singularities. A general theory of reconstructive phase transitions is then formulated, in which the structures surrounding a transition are expressed in terms of density-waves, providing a natural definition of the transition order-parameters, and a description of the corresponding phase diagrams and relevant physical properties. The applicability of the theory is illustrated by a large number of concrete examples pertaining to the various classes of reconstructive transitions: allotropic transformations of the elements, displacive and order-disorder transformations in metals, alloys and related structures, crystal-quasicrystal transformations.
