In this volume, the eminent classicist William Rhys Roberts (1858-1929) presents the Three Literary Letters of Dionysus of Halicarassus. Well established in the classical canon, the works of Dionysus are regarded particularly for their value as histories and as works of rhetoric. First published in 1901, this is an edition that encourages speakers of modern English to see Greek sources through the eyes of contemporary Greek critics. The original Greek text is printed with a facing-page English translations, and accompanied by notes, a glossary of rhetorical and grammatical terms, a bibliography, and an introductory essay on Dionysus as a literary critic. It remains an important early edition and translation of Dionysus that will be of interest to classicists and amateur readers of Greek.
Embark on a transcendent journey through the celestial realms with "On the Heavenly Hierarchy," a profound exploration of the angelic orders penned by the enigmatic theologian and philosopher, Dionysius the Areopagite. Within these pages, you are invited to contemplate the intricacies of the cosmos, as Dionysius weaves together theology, philosophy, and mysticism to reveal the structure and purpose of the divine beings who mediate between the ineffable God and the material world. This seminal work offers an illuminating guide to understanding the ranks of angels, their roles in the universe, and their impact on human life and spirituality. Immerse yourself in the rich thought of early Christian philosophy, where the sacred and the intellectual intertwine in a quest to grasp the ungraspable and witness the divine order.
A historian of the first century BC, Dionysius of Halicarnassus taught rhetoric in Rome while studying the Latin language, collecting material for his magnum opus, ‘Roman Antiquities’. These two letters were composed by St. Dionysius as he attempted to curb some of the Christological errors present in the early Alexandrian church. He does not address who is present, but many of the issues that are present relate direct to the question of the divinity of Christ.
