The partitioning of British India into independent Pakistan and India in August 1947 occurred in the midst of communal holocaust, with Hindus and Sikhs on one side and Muslims on the other. His first film was Jwar Bhata (1944). He details how he had to learn everything from scratch and how he had to develop his own distinct histrionics and style, which would set him apart from his contemporaries. After that, he soon soared to great heights with movies such as Jugnu, Shaheed, Mela, Andaz, Deedar, Daag and Devdas. In these movies he played the tragedian with such intensity that his psyche was adversely affected. He consulted a British psychiatrist, who advised him to switch over to comedy. The result was spectacular performances in laugh riots such as Azaad and Kohinoor, apart from a scintillating portrayal as a gritty tonga driver in Naya Daur. After a five-year break he started his ‘second innings’ with Kranti (1981), after which he appeared in a series of hits such as Vidhaata, Shakti, Mashaal, Karma, Saudagar and Qila.

Unlocking Commercial Financing for Clean Eneargy in East Asia was written for government decision makers in middle and high-income countries, members of international financing communities, and practitioners. In East Asia, all middle-income countries have national targets for energy efficiency and renewable energy, and some even have targets for carbon reduction. However, a major hurdle to achieving a sustainable energy path is mobilizing the required financing. Policy makers must determine how to unlock commercial financing to scale up clean energy investments. Unlocking Commercial Financing for Clean Energy in East Asia builds on recent experience in applying public financing instruments and attempts to address the following issues: when and under what circumstances to use public financing instruments, which instrument to select, and how to design and implement them most effectively. First and foremost, effective and conducive policies are essential to catalyzing commercial investment in clean energy. Once the right policy regime has been put in place, public financing mechanisms designed to mitigate risks and close financing gaps have proven to play a major catalytic role in kick-starting substantial investments in clean energy. Public financing mechanisms for energy efficiency are particularly important to mitigating financiers' risk perceptions, to aggregating small deals, and to enhancing the interest and capacity of domestic banks. Public financing for renewable energy can provide long-term loan tenure to match the long payback period, mitigate technology risks, and increase access to financing for small and medium enterprises. The selection of public financing instruments should be tailored to the market barriers, the targeted market segments, the regulatory environment, and the maturity of the financial market. Engaging domestic banks through credit lines and guarantees has had the greatest impact in unlocking private financing. Dedicated funds and mezzanine and equity funds can effectively increase access to financing for small and medium enterprises and clean energy start-ups. Finally, the impact of public financing instruments can be substantially increased if they are packaged with technical assistance.

Adolescents experience many challenges in their sexual and reproductive lives, therefore, appropriate and timely specialist advice and care can do much to alleviate problems and misconceptions, and enable young people to move forward with their lives in confidence. Not many doctors are familiar with the delicacy and sensitivity an adolescent girl needs to be treated with as she needs special attention and a quiet, friendly environment. The Adolescent Health Committee of FOGSI aims to achieve this task by establishing Adolescent Friendly Health Centers. Our mission is to sensitize the youth of our country, through various projects we will be dealing in different aspects of health, i.e. physical, mental, social, spiritual, reproductive and sexual health and well-being, throughout their lives. We aim to “help young people form a strong moral identity in their early adolescent years and empower them to contribute to the well-being of their communities...” Disseminating knowledge and helping our adolescents to be empowered has been the goal of the Adolescent Health Committee, FOGSI and one such endeavor would hopefully reach to our colleagues through this book. We have selected different topics related to ASRH for the interest of our readers who will invariably face the dilemma of counseling the young adolescents and relieving them of the stress related with their normal pubertal changes. The preventive health section covers the social aspect of health as not many doctors will be well-versed in treating difficult adolescents, peer pressure and introducing life skills to them. Teenage pregnancy has its own complications and knowledge about contraception is lacking amongst the adolescents which is a major cause of concern globally with complications of unsafe abortion. Premarital counseling, vaccines and knowledge about STDs are important aspects of reproductive sexual health. Menarche at early age and ovarian tumors are cause of concern not only to the adolescents but to their mothers as well, hence a special section will deal with this area. To update our knowledge and learn about laparoscopic and robotic surgery will be a delight for our readers as these are upcoming recent trends in adolescent gynecology.

The New Consensus Macroeconomics (NCM), which established itself in the 1980s as mainstream macroeconomics, essentially represents an “uneasy truce” between two dominant schools of economic thought viz. New Classical and Neo-Keynesian economics. The NCM sets the tone for much of the macroeconomic (especially monetary) policy followed by the advanced economies in the period of the Great Moderation (1990–2005). The recent global crisis has posed a major challenge to the NCM as empirical models based on the NCM failed to anticipate the occurrence of the crisis and later its extent and severity. The above considerations constitute the underpinnings of this book, which addresses the theoretical controversies within a general context and their policy implications for India. The authors’ analysis leads to a somewhat critical assessment of the financial sector policies followed in India since the initiation of reforms in 1991.
