Since antiquity, Epicurus’ thought has been compared to a powerful drug able to cure the pains of the soul that have always tormented man preventing him from living a peaceful existence: but we know that the Greek term pharmakon can be interpreted in its two opposite meanings of medicine and poison; and indeed, the same duplicity animates Epicurus’ philosophy which, by acting as a medicine for the human soul, also has the effect of a poison, destroying from within, philosophy traditionally conceived as a disinterested contemplation of truth. The philosophical revolution undertaken by Epicurus as a fracture with respect to all the previous tradition, from Thales to Aristotle, coincides with an inversion of the traditional relation between man and cosmos, between theory and practice: the classic question “what is reality made of?” is replaced by the Epicurean question that is at the basis of his philosophical anthropocentrism: “how must reality be made and how should one understand it in order to be happy?”. Each specific articulation of Epicurean philosophy is subordinate to the task of achieving a happy existence that is in no way inferior to any of the divine realities.
Apomixis is a difficult-to-analyse trait with a complex molecular basis and a substantive effect on the biology of a species. Thus, apomixis is an interesting characteristic for researchers and students working in different fields of plant science and agriculture, and technological advances are enabling and making apomixis studies more common. Apomixis in Angiosperms: Mechanisms, Occurrences, and Biotechnology provides a systematic introduction to the mechanisms and developmental types of apomixis along with an overview of alternative methodologies for identifying apomixis and a detailed reassessment of the occurrences of apomictic species among angiosperm families. Optional methods are illustrated with examples of all types of apomixis and biological levels of analysis, i.e. cells, ovules, seeds and offspring. Data on apomictic species are collected in tables along with information on ploidy, type of apomixis and references. Occurrences of apomixis are briefly discussed in phylogenetic and evolutionary contexts. An outline of the molecular basis of apomixis in plants is presented, together with prospects and challenges that remain for its biotechnological exploitation. This book: Provides a systematic overview of the mechanisms of apomixis, developmental types and methodology for apomixis research. Reassesses apomixis at the species level in angiosperm families. Contains tables summarizing relevant information on apomixis. Analyses occurrences of apomixis in phylogenetic and evolutionary contexts. Outlines the molecular basis and biotechnological perspective of apomixis breeding. This book presents an accessible overview of apomixis research and a curated dataset of apomictic species. It serves as a reference book for students, researchers and citizen scientists interested in apomixis, as well as researchers, business innovators and entrepreneurs pursuing apomixis breeding. It can also be used as a textbook in graduate courses on plant reproduction.
In a society where trust is in short supply and democracy weak, the Mafia sells protection, a guarantee of safe conduct for parties to commercial transactions. Drawing on the confessions of eight Mafiosi, Diego Gambetta develops an elegant analysis of the economic and political role of the Sicilian Mafia.
Moving from the Leaning Tower. It is not the title of a thriller but the concept of Pisa, discovered by Diego Casali, the guidebook of the best known tuscan city in the world. The Leaning Tower, which attracts millions of visitors every year, becomes the beginning of infinitive trips inside the ancient quarters of the medieval center. So the author try to stroll the traveller among itineraries, figures and beauties which Pisa is able to offer beside the Tower. There are lots of special contents too, really useful these day, especially the one dedicated to “Pisa Gratis” (Pisa for free): cleaver ideas like the map of public drinking fountains (where tourist and not can find fresh water); suntan & coolness; the map of free Internet or the public parks. Many pages are dedicated to the gastronomical tradition of tuscany and pisan food with the suggestion of the author to make easier the choose for lunch or dinner. The book is above all a poetic flight over the history, the culture and the hidden secrets of the ‘many Pisas’ inside Pisa itself, that too often lives at the shadow of the Leaning Tower.
During a century dominated by absolute monarchy and powerful aristocrats, the Mozart family traversed Europe on the quest for artistic consecration and prestigious promise. Was the ambition of his father, Leopold, combined with the genius of his son, Wolfgang, enough to reach their mission? The story of their lives, in order to get to know and understand them, follows the sojourns of the adventurous journeys that they carried out. This book takes a penetrating look at the life and experiences of the Mozart family during the 1700's: beyond the myth of Mozart, an in-depth view of their world. In this new publication, available in an engaging two-volume series by Diego Minoia, we learn about the life and times of the Mozart family. Everything that there is to discover about these extraordinary characters and the epoch in which they lived is illustrated in this interesting and curious story that narrates approximately thirty years of their lives: travels and encounters, triumphs and disappointments, petty deceit and genius, rebellion and defeat. The story of the Mozart family, told through their own eyes, thanks to a rich collection of letters containing a wealth of information, enriched with detailed study that allows us a complete panoramic view of the circles in which they traveled, between journeys and presentations, intrigue and friendship, compliance to the powerful and desire for autonomy. An overview of a family and of a European continent that helps us understand the Eighteenth Century from a protagonist who rendered it one of the most prolific eras for music.“The Mozarts: A Family Portrait” narrates the story of their lives until 1775, following them step by step, getting to know and understand them. Would you like to be their traveling companion? We will begin in Salzburg, where the family was formed and where Wolfgang Amadeus and his sister Maria Anna – known as Nannerl – were born to accompany them in their early travels to Munich and Vienna. We will then follow them in their very long European Grand Tour where the two young Mozarts were to become known as child prodigies, journeying through the principle courts of Germany, the Netherlands, France and England. 5,200 kilometers covered and 80 cities, visited in 1,269 days. No rock or pop star has ever accomplished such a tour!In Volume I, we will follow Mozart to Munich, then on to Vienna, and finally Paris. Volume II will see his return to Salzburg from London, traveling through France and Switzerland. This is the moment when Leopold Mozart's ambitions become more audacious. It was time for Wolfgang Amadeus to begin his formation in becoming a composer, and there was only one place to do this: Italy. And this is how father and son, alone, without the women of the family, confronted their three journeys to Dante's Bel Paese, where they made friends and found recognition, as well as some less complimentary opinions. We will continue to accompany the Mozarts along the various visits on their tour of Italy where they visited many important cities: Verona, Mantua, Milan, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Naples, Turin, Venice. We will discover through their travels the many interesting facts about how life was lived in the country of Bel Canto – beautiful singing. In the meantime, Amadeus the child, was growing into a mature musician, brought up to perfect his craft, having already composed his first operas, as well as being able to navigate his way through the creation of the sacred and profane vocal and instrumental music. The elderly prince-bishop who had supported the Mozarts passed away and was substituted by Hieronymus Colloredo, whose relationship with the family grew constrained over time. The small and provincial Salzburg didn't allow the young Wolfgang to express his full potential, who dreamed of the capital and a prestigious post at the Imperial Court.
This book offers an empirical and theoretical exploration of the development of object clitic pronouns in the Romance languages, drawing on data from Latin, medieval vernaculars, modern Romance languages, and lesser-known dialects. Diego Pescarini examines phonological, morphological, and especially syntactic aspects of Romance object clitics, using the findings to reconstruct their evolution from Latin to Romance and to model clitic placement in modern Romance languages. On the theoretical side, the volume engages with previous accounts of clitics, particularly in generative theory. It challenges the received idea that cliticization resulted from a form of syntactic deficiency; instead, it proposes that clitics resulted from the feature endowment of discourse features, which initially caused freezing of certain pronominal forms and then - through reanalysis - their successive incorporation to verbal hosts. This approach leads to a revision of earlier analyses of well-known phenomena such as interpolation, climbing, and enclisis/proclisis alternations, and to new approaches to issues including V2 syntax, scrambling, and stylistic fronting, among many others.

The contributors are Alison Brown, Remo Catani, Peter Brand, Marco Dorigatti, Mark Davie, Martin McLaughlin, Letizla Panlzza and Denis Reldy.
*** Diego Zucchinetti's Three Sonatas for the harpsichord or pianoforte with violin or flute belong to a genre—keyboard sonata with an accompanying melodic instrument—that was quite common by the late 18th century. The composer was an alumnus of the Pietà de' Turchini Conservatory, Naples; a local publisher, Marescalchi, printed those sonatas by 1794. In Paris, Nadermann reissued them few years later. They are all cast in three movements and show such a balanced distribution of musical material between the instruments, they can be virtually regarded as duets. Operatic passages and cantabile melodies link these pleasing specimens of late-century Italian instrumental music to their Neapolitan roots.
