America's oldest city, St. Augustine, has its fair share of things that go bump in the night. With such a long and varied history, its no surprise that a few restless souls have stayed on long after their lives ended.

There is considerable debate over the extent to which cognitive tasks can be learned non-consciously or implicitly. In recent years a large number of studies have demonstrated a discrepancy between explicit knowledge and measured performance. This book presents an overview of these studies and attempts to clarify apparently disparate results by placing them in a coherent theoretical framework. It draws on evidence from neuropsychological and computational modelling studies as well as the many laboratory experiments. Chapter one sets out the background to the large number of recent studies on implicit learning. It discusses research on implicit memory, perception without awareness, and automaticity. It attempts to set the implicit - explicit distinction in the context of other relevant dichotomies in the literature. Chapter two presents an overview of research on the control of complex systems, from Broadbent (1977) through to the present day. It looks at the accessibility of control task knowledge, as well as whether there is any other evidence for a distinction between implicit and explicit modes of learning. Chapter three critically reviews studies claiming to show that people can acquire concepts without being verbally aware of the basis on which they are responding. It shows that concept formation can be implicit in some sense but not in others. Chapter four investigates the claim that people can learn sequential information in an implicit way. Chapter five looks at whether computational modelling can elucidate the nature of implicit learning. It examines the feasibility of different exemplar connectionist models in accounting for performance in concept learning, sequence learning, and control task experiments. Chapter six reviews evidence concerning dissociations between implicit and explicit knowledge in various neuropsychological syndromes. Finally, chapters seven and eight discuss the many practical and theoretical implications of the research.

What are the most effective methods to code and analyze data for a particular study? This thoughtful and engaging book reviews the selection criteria for coding and analyzing any set of data--whether qualitative, quantitative, mixed, or visual. The authors systematically explain when to use verbal, numerical, graphic, or combined codes, and when to use qualitative, quantitative, graphic, or mixed-methods modes of analysis. Chapters on each topic are organized so that researchers can read them sequentially or can easily "flip and find" answers to specific questions. Nontechnical discussions of cutting-edge approaches--illustrated with real-world examples--emphasize how to choose (rather than how to implement) the various analyses. The book shows how using the right analysis methods leads to more justifiable conclusions and more persuasive presentations of research results. Useful features for teaching or self-study: *Chapter-opening preview boxes that highlight useful topics addressed. *End-of-chapter summary tables recapping the 'dos and don'ts' and advantages and disadvantages of each analytic technique. *Annotated suggestions for further reading and technical resources on each topic. Subject Areas/Keywords: analyses, coding, combined methods, data analysis, data collection, dissertation, graphical, interpretation, mixed methods, qualitative, quantitative, research analysis, research designs, research methods, social sciences, thesis, visual Audience: Researchers, instructors, and graduate students in a range of disciplines, including psychology, education, social work, sociology, health, and management; administrators and managers who need to make data-driven decisions"--
The renowned dermatologist's easy-to-follow, quick-results program to treat skin both inside and out, using widely available products Since 1972, Dr. Howard Murad has been studying the effects of the environment, nutrition, and lifestyle on skin and creating a skin-care program to slow the aging process. The Murad Method is the result of his three decades of clinical experience treating more than 40,000 men and women as well as independent research proving the effectiveness of the program. His unique approach to skin care combines external products and internal supplements in a simple regimen that will improve the texture and look of anyone's skin. This book clarifies the science behind what Dr. Murad believes is the next generation of skin care, an approach based on what he calls the Water Principle. Rather than relying on a single "miracle" ingredient, this breakthrough program includes a combination of exfoliants, polyphenols and other antioxidants, amino acids, fatty acids, and anti-inflammatory agents that enhance skin hydration. The Water Principle is the foundation of Dr. Murad's unique system for repairing and rejuvenating your skin. The skin is your body's largest organ, and The Murad Method is the first book to show you how its appearance directly reflects your overall health. The Murad Method has been clinically proven to: - boost hydration - reduce wrinkles - increase elasticity - improve sun protection By following a regimen that suits your skin type and requires just five minutes, morning and night, for five weeks, you will not only counter the damage that causes aging, but actually reverse the visible signs of aging and reduce wrinkles. Simple, clear charts show you how to customize an anti-aging regimen for your skin type and special concerns. You can assemble your own program, using either Murad or name-brand products. There is an extensive listing of products that contain the key ingredients Dr. Murad recommends in his anti-aging prescription to guide you. The information in this book will change the way you think about your skin--and give you the tools you need to make your skin look younger in five weeks.
