At the Table of Power is both a cookbook and a culinary history that intertwines social issues, personal stories, and political commentary. Renowned culinary historian Diane M. Spivey offers a unique insight into the historical experience and cultural values of African America and America in general by way of the kitchen. From the rural country kitchen and steamboat floating palaces to marketplace street vendors and restaurants in urban hubs of business and finance, Africans in America cooked their way to positions of distinct superiority, and thereby indispensability. Despite their many culinary accomplishments, most Black culinary artists have been made invisible—until now. Within these pages, Spivey tells a powerful story beckoning and daring the reader to witness this culinary, cultural, and political journey taken hand in hand with the fight of Africans in America during the foundation years, from colonial slavery through the Reconstruction era. These narratives, together with the recipes from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, expose the politics of the day and offer insight on the politics of today. African American culinary artists, Spivey concludes, have more than earned a rightful place at the table of culinary contribution and power.

A celebrated storyteller-poet-naturalist explores a year of dawns in her most personal book to date. In an eye-opening sequence of personal meditations through the cycle of seasons, Diane Ackerman awakens us to the world at dawn—drawing on sources as diverse as meteorology, world religion, etymology, art history, poetry, organic farming, and beekeeping. As a patient and learned observer of animal and human physiology and behavior, she introduces us to varieties of bird music and other signs of avian intelligence, while she herself “migrates” from winter in Florida to spring, summer, and fall in upstate New York. Humans might luxuriate in the idea of being “in” nature, Ackerman points out, but we often forget that we are nature—for “no facet of nature is as unlikely as we, the tiny bipeds with the giant dreams.” Joining science’s devotion to detail with religion’s appreciation of the sublime, Dawn Light is an impassioned celebration of the miracles of evolution—especially human consciousness of our numbered days on a turning earth.

Her young son, Arch, a student at Elk Park Prep, has become a target for some not-so-funny pranks, while her eighteen-year-old live-in helper, Julian, has become a prime suspect in the Andrews boy's murder. As her investigation intensifies, Goldy's anxiety level rises faster than homemade doughnuts. . .as she turns up evidence that suggests that Keith knew more than enough to blow the lid off some very unscholarly secrets. The bittersweet and ironic evocations of the failed loves of her life make this among the most moving, as well as revealing, of Ms. Wakoski's books.

The courtroom is the stage for Unruly Angels, Diane Buchanan's new book of poetry, but this courtroom is unlike any other. Here applause is encouraged and both tears and laughter can spontaneously erupt. Here the audience consists of prisoners, nursing babies, mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters, as well as the usual legal and security staff, student nurses and the occasional observer. Here the actors are people afflicted with drug addictions. This book opens the curtains on Drug Treatment Courts, a court specifically designed to supervise cases of drug-dependent offenders who have agreed to accept treatment for substance abuse. It seems an unusual place for a poet and, perhaps for some, addicts and drug addiction are distasteful subjects for poetry. But Diane Buchanan believes that this is what Carolyn Forché calls a poetry of witness that is neither personal nor political but somewhere in between, in a space Forché describes as a place of resistance and struggle ... By situating poetry in this social space we can avoid some of our residual prejudices ... Unruly Angels begins with a warning: This poem is a roiling sea of drug-soaked decay, a Tarot card warning, a tsunami presage, and ends with a promise: Hang in there. It's worth it. In between are soliloquies, sonnets, incarcerations, graduations, conditions, confessions and a whole alphabet of courage. Poet Mary Oliver writes: There are in this world a lot of devils with wondrous smiles. Also many unruly angels. In this brave and insightful poetry collection we are taken behind the scenes with the Drug Court team to find that, often, beneath that addict's mask is a terrified angel.

Half of Every Couple takes the reader through the year following the death of the author's husband, ending their nearly fifty year marriage. Weekly entries follow Diane O'Brien's journey of grief - from the numbness of the first weeks to a gradual awakening to the possibilities that lay ahead. With a 150-year-old farm house and barn, a flock of laying hens, a dog and six grandchildren within a mile or two there are few quiet moments. The paradox of grieving amidst the renewal of life all around her is a central theme of Half of Every Couple. That this unfolds in the context of a small coastal Maine town where everyone knows someone has died when the dooryard's full of cars makes it all the more interesting.
Poetry is my way of expressing my feelings about the world around me. Instead of writing in a journal, I prefer to write free verse to express my feelings in words, rather than yell or hit someone. Other times, I write poems to remember important people, animals, observations, and events in my life.

I am number 13 in a family of 17 children. We grew up on a farm where everyone did everything. No one was excluded from contributing to getting the chores done. It was hard work and we never lacked for anything that was important. There was sibling rivalry and a lot of laughter. We played as hard as we worked. Mom was the glue and the disciplinarian. The lesson ingrained was: Family is always important. Be true to yourself. Mom and Dad had their issues, yet you saw those flashes of love. I had the pleasure of getting to know my mother as a woman first. Once we developed that relationship, I have always respectfully treated every adult as a person first and parent second. As adults, we have needs and those needs do not always get met as parents. That gift alone is precious beyond words. A tear escaped my father while he read a piece I wrote for him. I have been writing all my life. Life changes have sparked my creative energy to write. This was not the book I began. This was the book that I always wanted to write: my poetry/prose.

A minister's wife finds herself in hell. The story of Lazarus and the rich man in Luke 16:19-31 gives a chilling insight into the afterlife. It is a story that is not often addressed because it makes clear the separation of people upon death. Frank Winscott, a retired minister, works at comparing translations of the Bible. Eugena has ignored her husband's work and his sermons all her life. Instead, she finds meaning in her potter's shed, where she makes different forms of ziggurats that she places in her kiln, a little symbol of hell. Though Eugena rejects Frank's insistence that there is a heaven and hell, she finds that she has worked with the shape of both and never knew it. In the end, she realizes that heaven and hell are in the shape of ziggurats, one rising and the other sinking. Her beloved ziggurats become the ironic witness of what her husband preached. Meanwhile, Frank and Eugena struggle to make sense of their lives after the death of their addict son, Daniel. When he is killed in a car accident, Frank and Eugena argue over whether Daniel's death was truly an accident, or whether his car may have been pushed off the road. The novel begins, "Another letter from the afterlife, you might say. But this one starts before the afterlife and continues into it." When Eugena dies, she travels through hell to find her son, Daniel. Frank sends the last chapter from heaven. The novel was influenced by Dante's The Divine Comedy and begins with an epigraph from The Inferno, "What I was living, that I am dead.
As the title suggests, this book concerns the art and life of the world's only "American Linear Impressionist", Lilian Westcott Hale. Born in Connecticut in 1881, Hale was educated primarily at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and lived for many years in nearby Dedham, moving to Charlottesville, Virginia after the death of her beloved educator, art critic, author, and painter husband, Philip Leslie Hale. A woman, Hale far outpaced the success of many men, including her husband. During her early decades of activity, Hale garnered innumerable naational awards, accolades, and prizes, and international acclaim for her oil portraits of children, women in interiors, and charcoal sketches of snowy landscpes, all created in an Impressionist style utilizing only vertical strokes. Hale was the originator and sole practitioner of a technique which paradoxically used line in an Impressionist manner. While her classic art fell out of favor during the Modernist 1940s and later, it is now once again very much in vogue. My relationship with the artist's only child, her daughter, Nancy, was of immeasurable assistance in the production of this book. Diane Elizabeth Kelleher Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, 2013.

As one of the best-known honky tonkers to appear in the wake of Hank Williams’s death, Faron Young was a popular presence on Nashville’s music scene for more than four decades. The Singing Sheriff produced a string of Top Ten hits, placed over eighty songs on the country music charts, and founded the long-running country music periodical Music City News in 1963. Flamboyant, impulsive, and generous, he helped and encouraged a new generation of talented songwriter-performers that included Willie Nelson and Bill Anderson. In 2000, four years after his untimely death, Faron was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Presenting the first detailed portrayal of this lively and unpredictable country music star, Diane Diekman masterfully draws on extensive interviews with Young’s family, band members, and colleagues. Impeccably researched, Diekman’s narrative also weaves anecdotes from Louisiana Hayride and other old radio shows with ones from Young’s business associates, including Ralph Emery. Her unique insider’s look into Young’s career adds to an understanding of the burgeoning country music entertainment industry during the key years from 1950 to 1980, when the music expanded beyond its original rural roots and blossomed into a national (ultimately, international) enterprise. Echoing Young’s characteristic ability to entertain and surprise fans, Diekman combines an account of his public career with a revealing, intimate portrait of his personal life.
