Cut it, color it, perm it, shave it, braid it, wax it, highlight it, mousse it, gel it, brush it and brush it and brush it... What don't we do to our hair? Diane Simon is fascinated by people's relationship with their hair because it is both very personal one and very public. She recognizes that so much of who we are is reflected in our relationship with our hair. Diane is the curly-haired daughter of straight haired parents and has suffered much for her "bad hair". In researching and writing Hair: Public, Political, Extremely Personal she has used her suffering as a point of entry, a common ground to share with those who think of themselves as excluded from Western beauty norms because of their hair. In Hair: Public, Political, Extremely Personal, social and cultural issues form the backdrop for an exploration of the choices people make to transform themselves through their hair. Hair is a cultural investigation with a strong narrative momentum and a commitment to individual personalities. Join Diane on her visits to Harlem braiding salons and Hassidic wig shops, and in her quest to try every type of hair removal. Spend an afternoon with Sy Sperling at the Hair Club for Men headquarters in Boca Raton, Florida, and find out the truth about some celebrity scalps. In this highly readable and engaging commentary on the Gospel of Luke, Diane Chen introduces her readers to the particularities of the world of Jesus, steeped in Jewish history and convictions yet threatened by Roman power and hegemony. In story after story, Chen brings to focus the diligence of a faithful historian, the artistry of a masterful storyteller, and the courage of an insightful theologian behind this well-loved Gospel. In it Luke presents God's plan of salvation in the birth and death, word and deed, and identity and mission of Jesus of Nazareth--a plan that is unapologetically counterintuitive: the proud is humbled and the lowly is lifted up; the ostracized is embraced and the religious elite is rejected. Modern readers will receive more than a lucid explanation of the biblical text; they will be challenged to find their own place in Jesus' story, one that encourages self-reflection and necessitates a personal response.

Just imagineyou are there two thousand years ago! How would you feel and what would you do? Bridge the gap of time likening us today to His life experiences, bringing Jesus into today as our world also explodes with brutalities worse than in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah. Revisit His trials and convictions: the fourteen Stations of the Cross; the people he met on the way to Golgotha; the miraculous resurrection. Delight in the loving experiences Lord Jesus surprised those He visited within His holy resurrected appearances. It is the author/artists intent that by bringing our Savior, Jesus Christ into today, through this in-depth pictorial history, it will provide a wake-up call for us to realize the great unfathomable love of God and changebefore its too late! Levels and levels of thoughts and visions became the most powerful and joyful times spent producing these drawings and writings. I even added to biblical text. I had to, because I found a new relationship with Jesus so wonderful, I needed to expound on that and I saw that I was blessed to bring a new portrait of the Prince of Peace, the kind, understanding, loving man, Himself. This is not a story only for the Lenten season, but a story for all time.
Using analysis of recent archaeological discoveries and her extensive education in psychology, theology, and biblical archaeology, Dr. Diane Holloway Cheney is bringing a fresh new take on the lives and ministries of some of the most well-known New Testament figures: Jesus, his brother James, and the apostle Paul. Jesus, His Brother, and Paul: Their Lives and Archaeological Evidence provides a fascinating quest for truth about these famous men—these founders of Christianity—and their relationships with each other. It examines how Christianity transformed from its beginnings with Jesus and James into something that has lasted through the centuries. It even looks at how Jesus’s against-the-grain decisions invited worldwide acceptance, far beyond what he had ever envisioned. Perhaps most importantly, this book poses the question: Is the current version of Christianity better or worse than Jesus’s original vision? Read these pages and judge for yourself.

In 1965, Father Martin, a Roman Catholic priest, is working as a high school teacher in Chicago when he runs into his friend, Bishop Keegan, on the El train. The bishop asks him to replace his former pastor, Father Bernard, who has disappeared without a trace in the Peruvian Andes. Father Martin reluctantly agrees. When he arrives at his assigned mission, he is chased out by an angry mob that threatens his life. Father Martin is taken to a nearby clinic for his injuries. There, he is treated by a beautiful Peace Corps nurse who warns him of the dangers of remaining in Valle Sagrado, but he refuses to leave. Over time, Father Martin realizes that there is more to his predecessor’s disappearance than anyone could have imagined. He also notices that the meticulous, rigid expressions of church dogma threaten the ancient traditions of the people of the Sacred Valley, sometimes with tragic results, so he strives to embody a more transcendent experience of charity, forgiveness, and love. Based on the actual stories of missionaries who served in the Peruvian Andes, Blessed Are the Meek teaches the importance of community and acceptance, even in the most trying of times.

Gifted pupils who also have special needs often receive provision for the special need whilst the giftedness is overlooked. Children with such double exceptionality can become depressed, frustrated and misbehave, and may not fulfil their potential. Based on international research and practice, this practical text enables the reader to identify highly able pupils with special needs, such as ADHD, dyspraxia, dyslexia and Downs Syndrome, and then make provision for them within the mainstream school. The book offers three emerging themes: creating a positive, constructive and supportive learning environment; offering a cognitively challenging curriculum; and engaging the learners in partnership to understand and manage their learning support. Whilst aimed mainly at teachers and students at both primary and secondary levels, this book should also be of interest to educators, researchers and educational psychologists.

A professor hears the voices of Biblical women. She begins writing. What was it like for Dorcas to die and be brought back to life? What was it like for Philip's daughters to live with the threat of persecution after Christ was crucified? What did Miriam feel when she sat in the leprosy tent? What did they all say as the professor wove her own story between their voices? It was Michal, David's first wife, who made a bolster of goat's hair for David's bed when Saul, her father, was trying to kill him. The bolster made it look as if David were there. Likewise, these women's voices are not their actual voices, because they were not recorded in Scripture, but a similitude of what such women might have said. The narrator struggles with their stories beneath Scripture. Michal is maligned because she scorned David when he danced before the ark, but after the death of her sister, she raised her sister's sons. David hanged them all when the Gibeonites told him that Saul had broken a covenant with them. They asked that Saul's male descendants be killed. What was it like for Michal to see her nephews hanged? What did she have to say?

States reject inequality when they choose to ratify the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), but to date the ICESCR has not yet figured prominently in the policy calculus behind States' international economic decisions. This book responds to the modern challenge of operationalizing the ICESCR, particularly in the context of States' decisions within international trade, finance, and investment. Differentiating between public policy mechanisms and institutional functional mandates in the international trade, finance, and investment systems, this book shows legal and policy gateways for States to feasibly translate their fundamental duties to respect, protect, and fulfil economic, social and cultural rights into their trade, finance, and investment commitments, agreements, and contracts. It approaches the problem of harmonizing social protection objectives under the ICESCR with a State's international economic treaty obligations, from the designing and interpreting international treaty texts, up to the institutional monitoring and empirical analysis of ICESCR compliance. In examining public policy options, the book takes into account around five decades of States' implementation of social protection commitments under the ICESCR; its normative evolution through the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and the Committee's expanded fact-finding and adjudicative competences under the Optional Protocol to the ICESCR; as well as the critical, dialectical, and deliberative roles of diverse functional interpretive communities within international trade, finance, and investment law. Ultimately, the book shoes how States' ICESCR commitments operate as the normative foundation of their trade, finance, and investment decisions.

This book follows the men of the 5th Corps and the Army of the Potomac through the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor, with the army condemned to moving blindly through enemy territory without the benefit of cavalry scouting or screening. It considers the lost opportunities of June 1864, when Grant's masterly movement of the Army of the Potomac across the James to confront the enemy at Petersburg should have ended in victory and the fall of Richmond. Bungling and complacency doomed the attacks on Petersburg's fortifications, and instead of victory, the battered Federals faced a drawn-out siege, and another 10 months of war. Finally, the author considers what happened to a number of the prominent Federal participants in the Overland Campaign during the last year of the war and after. Many of those who lied and cheated their way to the top became government leaders and the authors of policy for years to come.
