He raised his eleven children in South Eastern Arizona. Daughters memories about her dad included him gathering his instruments together getting them ready for playing, by tuning his smoke green Anniversary Gretchen Electric Guitar. Avelino played a variety of music, Flamenco, Country, Corridos, Rancheras and Rock. His bands included "The Lucky Four" Charlie Hemphill (Bass Guitar), his brother Bill on (Lead Guitar), Brooks Nutell on (Drums). "The Lucky Four had no problems getting gigs, putting a variety of music together as an excellent form of entertainment" as told by Hemphill. "The Mixers", another band included Doughnut Delgado Jr.,Frank Shelton,Charlie Hemphill,George Reyes,and Tom Guerena. "The Mixers" traveled to Buffalo, New York to audition on "The Johnny Carson Show" in the early 1960s, reaching for a spotlight on National TV. However, that dream was short lived when one of the band members got cold feet and thus the band opted not to play for the audition. Avelino had been practicing for a funeral he was to attend,on that very night May 20, 1985 he passed away at 59. His music was silenced for the first time in our entire life. Jimmy Delgado Sr. and Bobby Merino Sr. dads best friends were in shock when their music companion suddenly died. Music was Avelino he left a legacy behind and his daughter Frances Diane has given others the opportunity to learn about the extraordinary man who never left his love of music behind. "For every photo there is a story", as told by Frances Frances Avalos. "Music was everything for dad its how he lived we could not separate that from him if mother would have tried it never would have happened it would have been unsuccessful for her, he lived with music he died that way. In behalf of our Avalos family we wish to dedicated my book "The Avelinos to him. May his love of music and his memories continue to be told. We wish to thank Dennis Landberg KJZZ Radio Station for the opportunity to air our story, and special thanks to Paul Atkinson (Producer/Reporter).

This book looks at the migration and work experiences of six women who have migrated to Australia from China; Zimbabwe; South Korea; the United Kingdom; India and the Philippines. It sets their journeys out into three distinct periods of migration, including the first period of their lives when they reflect on their experiences growing up with their immediate families and the factors that encouraged them to gravitate towards a nursing career. The second period covers time when each of these women begin to think about where their career in nursing might taken them. During this phase, these women take their first steps to leave their home country and migrate to Australia, often after several countries in between. The final section allows the reader to understand how these women initially experienced Australia when they first arrived and how they faced challenges both personally and professionally after arrival in their new place to call home. The discussions within these three sections cover both professional and personal/familial reflections, where differences in nursing identity between sending and destination country is discussed alongside the adjustments that the women needed to make to overcome loneliness and to successfully integrate into new organizational environments. Each chapter analyses migration as a life course, which considers why nurses leave their home country and find a new place to call home. Furthermore, if they find themselves thinking about returning to their country of birth; how or if they maintain transnational links, and how identity and ethnicity shape these responses. These life trajectories are underscored by an historical context setting of nursing migration to Australia in the opening chapter offering unique insights into the changing process of migration, accreditation, registration and settlement of nurses in Australia. The book will be of value to researchers, academics, and students interested in gender studies, career and migration, health and nursing, and international HRM.

Early modern architecture coincided with a sustained drive to transform a country that was still primarily rural into a modern industrial state, and throughout the twentieth century, architects in Italy have attempted to define the role of architecture within a capitalist economy and under diverse political systems. In Italy: Modern Architectures in History, Diane Yvonne Ghirardo addresses these and other issues in her analysis of the last century of Italy’s building practices. Specifically, she examines the post-unification efforts to identify a distinctly Italian architectural language, as well as the transformation of the urban environment in Italian cities undergoing industrialization in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She challenges received interpretations of modern architecture and also looks at the subject of illegal building and current responses to ecological challenges. In order to illuminate the full scope of the building industry in Italy, her examples are drawn not only from the work of widely published architects in the largest cities but from throughout the peninsula, including small towns and rural areas. Insightful reading for those interested in Italian culture, this book offers a new way of understanding the architectural history of modern Italy.

The entries are organized by topic, so that students and beginners can easily find their way to discussion of the themes and motifs they see before them when looking at a painting.

Challenging long-held patriarchal assumptions about Italian women's work in the United States Diane C. Vecchio's unique study considers the work experiences of Italian immigrant women and their daughters in the previously unexamined regions of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Endicott, New York, during the turn of the twentieth century. Using Italian and American sources and rich oral histories, this study reveals that women in Italy had economic responsibilities that often included work experiences outside of the home, including jobs as midwives and businesswomen. Demonstrating the regional variation of Italian women's work as well as the skills they transplanted to America balances the image of inexperienced and low-skilled laborers that dominates scholarship on Italian working women. Vecchio's research on Endicott sheds light on the gendered nature of life in a "company town" governed by welfare paternalism, while her research on Milwaukee emphasizes how Italian immigrant women turned to small business enterprise when local opportunities for wage-earning were limited. This comparative method helps to move beyond reductionist theories and conventional portraits of Italian women to explore the diverse factors that prompted them to seek certain kinds of occupations to the exclusion of others.
