In 2006, the United Nations urged Member States to ensure that counter terrorism policies guaranteed respect for human rights and the rule of law. Plagiarism has long been regarded with concern by the university community as a serious act of wrongdoing threatening core academic values. There has been a perceived increase in plagiarism over recent years, due in part to issues raised by the new media, a diverse student population and the rise in English as a lingua franca. This book examines plagiarism, the inappropriate relationship between a text and its sources, from a linguistic perspective. Despite the significant number of AIDS affected youth in the United States, the plight of these young people has been largely disregarded. This book presents the stories of several young people whose mothers had AIDS or had died from the disease. They speak directly about their experiences and their concerns. Individual and common themes in their stories are analyzed to gain insight into their problems and to develop an understanding of how best to respond to their needs. Some prominent themes shared by the participants are: longstanding unstable living arrangements; serious conflict with their mothers; multiple losses in the youth's lives, even before the AIDS crisis; the mother's past drug use; behavioral problems and difficulties with limits in the family, school, and the community; unsafe sexual behavior; and childbearing within a year of the mother's death. These issues are exacerbated by the poverty, discrimination, and violence in the communities in which these and many AIDS affected young people live.

Traditional pathology models do not provide a satisfactory framework for professional practice with families of people with mental retardation. Families and Mental Retardation is written from the perspective of a competence paradigm for professional practice, which offers a constructive alternative to the more prevalent pathology models of the past. The goal of professional practice is to empower families in coping with the catastrophic stressor of mental retardation. Such an approach recognizes the strengths and resources of families, which have often been minimized in the past, and fosters new collaborative modes of family-professional relationships. Unique features include a consideration of life-span and family system and subsystem perspectives, as well as the inclusion of powerful personal accounts of family members. The volume is likely to be of special value to mental health and health care professionals, who often receive little training in mental retardation or family-professional relations, and who tend to apply a pathology model.
