A Genre Analysis of Social Change contributes to current scholarship in rhetorical genre studies and discourse analysis in contexts of social change. Diana Wegner explores the ways that historical genre systems can be transformed through the process of discursive uptake across genres and their spheres of activity. In this study such cross-genre uptake is pursued from its beginning in advocacy genres to its incorporation into higher-level, institutional genres. It represents the summation of Wegner’s work over many years on how systems of genre can adapt to change as groups and institutional systems negotiate the uptake of solutions to major social challenges, in this case study the Canadian “Housing First” solution to ending homelessness. Her study shows how rhetorical genre analysis can offer insight into issues related to social justice for marginal groups within society. Introducing the concepts of “deep” and “shallow” genre memory, Wegner analyzes why uptake is problematic and disturbing for those participants in the homelessness genre system who find that the receiving genre does not “remember” the historical moorings of its antecedent contexts. Genre provides an explanatory framework for these uptake dynamics, and for both the re-inscription of power relations and the incremental progress of the shared struggle to help homeless people. The book includes an introduction by Heather Graves.

`Any cognitive therapy text which quotes from Alice in Wonderland is off to a good start - and in the case of Counselling for Anxiety Problems, it gets better and better. This is an excellent book written by counselling psychologists, aimed primarily at counselling psychologists. Diana Sanders and Frank Wills are experienced cognitive therapists, who, through various books, are performing a valuable role of building bridges between counsellors and the practice of cognitive therapists. In doing so, they lay to rest many of the misconceptions counsellors may have about cognitive therapy (often based on an 80s version of the therapy), and place particular emphasis on the central importance of therapeutic relationship in cognitive therapy, as in counselling. Their review and discussion of the anxiety disorders is comprehensive and contemporary, as indicated by the number of references from the past five years. Furthermore their clinical experience, as well as their humour, shines through. Although primarily aimed at the counselling market, it will be just as useful for therapists from a variety of backgrounds. I can thoroughly recommend this book′ - Amazon Review Anxiety is one of the most common psychological problems for which people seek help. Through research, major advances have been made in understanding the causes of anxiety, the different forms it takes and how problems perpetuate. In turn this has led to the development of more targeted ways of helping sufferers. The authors outline general methods of working with anxiety sufferers and highlight the issues specific to this client group. When first beginning research to find her family's history, Diana sought out the descendants of the Simon family in the St. Louis area to learn that the place they came from had something to do with 'swans.' She later learned that they came from Swanden, in the Canton of Glarus in Switzerland. Then through her great-grandfathers obituary in Davenport, Iowa, she was able to place the Millers/Moellers in Schoenberg, Schleswig-Holstein. The Hansens and the Carstensens were just as influential as the Carstensens were the "Kings Royal Forest Rangers." Enjoy the journey as you learn how they came to Davenport, Iowa from Schoenberg on the edge of the Baltic Sea in Germany (where they were fishermen) and the Alps of Switzerland (where they were of Jewish faith) to the small village of Cordova, on the banks of the muddy Mississippi after the Civil War. More than 40 generations, the families reach back to 860 A.D. and include medieval rulers of Europe.
