Even today there are Weems living in Abbeville County, both white and black. For years, genealogists have been confused about who is the son of whom, but land records make it clear that '4' men; Thomas (Eleanor) Weems, Redfearn Weems, Thomas (and Elizabeth) Weems, and Henry Weems all were granted land on Long Cane Creek. While the county lines have changed dramatically over the years, Long Cane Creek remained a constant. It was here that thousands of Weems descendants, both black and white, call home. Today, DNA evidence is slowly dividing the different Weems children into family groups. Included here, are the descendants of each of those identified children; regardless of who their parent(s) was. There is most certainly missing information, errors in dates and places, and misspellings. Feel free to scribble on your book and make your corrections, and additions.

Edith Cavell was born on 4th December 1865, daughter of the vicar of Swardeston in Norfolk, and shot in Brussels on 12th October 1915 by the Germans for sheltering British and French soldiers and helping them escape over the Belgian border. Following a traditional village childhood in 19th century England, Edith worked as a governess in the UK and abroad, before training as a nurse in London in 1895. To Edith, nursing was a duty, a vocation, but above all a service. By 1907, she had travelled most of Europe and become matron of her own hospital in Belgium, where, under her leadership, a ramshackle hospital with few staff and little organization became a model nursing school. When war broke out, Edith helped soldiers to escape the war by giving them jobs in her hospital, finding clothing and organizing safe passage into Holland. In all, she assisted over two hundred men. When her secret work was discovered, Edith was put on trial and sentenced to death by firing squad. She uttered only 130 words in her defense. A devout Christian, the evening before her death, she asked to be remembered as a nurse, not a hero or a martyr, and prayed to be fit for heaven. When news of Edith's death reached Britain, army recruitment doubled. After the war, Edith's body was returned to the UK by train and every station through which the coffin passed was crowded with mourners. Diana Souhami brings one of the Great War's finest heroes to life in this biography of a hardworking, courageous and independent woman.

The Fundamentals of Campaign Finance in the U.S. takes care to situate the campaign finance system in the context of the broader U.S. political and economic system. Dwyre and Kolodny offer readers a brief tour through the development of the campaign finance regulatory structure, highlighting the Supreme Court’s commitment to free speech over political equality from Buckley v. Valeo (1976) through the passage of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act (BCRA, 2002). They also examine the driving force behind campaign finance reform—corruption—through historical, transactional, and institutional perspectives. While diving into the insufficiency of the disclosure and enforcement of campaign finance laws and calling attention to multiple federal agencies, including the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Communications Commission, the Internal Revenue Service, and (principally) the Federal Election Commission, the authors show how a narrow view on campaign finance makes change difficult and why reforms often have limited success. By examining the fundamentals, Dwyre and Kolodny show the difficulties of changing a political system whose candidates have always relied on private funding of campaigns to one that guarantees free speech rights while minimizing concerns of corruption.

The United States repeatedly experiences floods along the Midwest's large rivers and droughts in the arid Western States that cause traumatic environmental disasters with huge economic impact. These problems can be alleviated with an integrated approach and comprehensive solution. Withdrawing flood water from the Mississippi River and its tributaries will mitigate the damage of flooding and provide a new resource of fresh water to the Western States. The existence of a trend of increasing heavy precipitation and flooding on the Midwest's Rivers is supported by a growing body of scientific literature that documents the effects of climate change since 1993. Flooding in Iowa, North Dakota, Tennessee, Arkansas and along the Mississippi River from 1993 to 2010 are prime examples. The Colorado River Basin and the western states are experiencing a protracted multi-year drought. Fresh water can be pumped via pipelines and aqueducts from areas of overabundance/flood to areas of drought or high demand. Calculations document 10 to 60 million acre feet (maf) of fresh water per flood event can be captured from the Midwest's Rivers and pumped via pipelines to the Colorado River and introduced upstream of Lake Powell, Utah, also to destinations near Denver, Colorado, and used in areas along the new water transportation routes. Water users of the Colorado River include the cities in southern Nevada, southern California, northern Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Indian Tribes, and Mexico. The proposed starting, end points, and routes of the water transportation routes are documented, including information on right-of-ways necessary for state and federal permits. The National Smart Water Grid™ (NSWG) could create a million new jobs for construction, operation, and maintenance and save billions per year in drought and flood damage reparations tax dollars. The socio-economic benefits include decreased flooding in the Midwest; increased agriculture, and recreation and tourism; improved national security, transportation, and fishery and wildlife habitats; decreased salinity in Colorado River water crossing the US-Mexico border; and decreased eutrophication/hypoxia (excessive plant growth and decay) in the Gulf of Mexico to name a few. The sale of captured flood water could pay for the National Smart Water Grid™. The cost benefit analysis indicates that the NSWG should be net beneficial. A detailed feasibility studies for each pipeline/aqueduct transportation route is warranted.The Second Edition expands flooding and recent climate change data, emphasis on cost/benefit analysis, details on the engineered features such as pipes, pumps, aqueducts, and patent pending modified levees.Water is a $400 billion industry, the third largest behind oil and electricity. The U.S. has a Strategic Petroleum Reserve and needs a comparable Strategic Water Reserve. The National Smart Water Grid could become a Strategic Water Reserve and augment the National Energy Grid. The availability and sustainability of freshwater is the most important issue facing humanity in this century.
