This book explores the dissemination of knowledge around Chinese medicinal substances from the eighteenth to twentieth centuries in a global context. The author presents a microhistory of the caterpillar fungus, a natural, medicinal substance initially used by Tibetans no later than the fifteenth century and later assimilated into Chinese materia medica from the eighteenth century onwards. Tracing the transmission of the caterpillar fungus from China to France, Britain, Russia and Japan, the book investigates the tensions that existed between prevailing Chinese knowledge and new European ideas about the caterpillar fungus. Emerging in eighteenth and nineteenth-century Europe, these ideas eventually reached communities of scientists, physicians and other intellectuals in Japan and China. Seeking to examine why the caterpillar fungus engaged the attention of so many scientific communities across the globe, the author offers a transnational perspective on the making of modern European natural history and Chinese materia medica.

Daily communicative events, e.g. banquets, market negotiations, work-place disputes, and various social encounters across a range of settings are used to trace the essential role that emotion/affect plays in forming and reproducing social relations and group identities among Chinese migrants. Wu suggests that affective encounters in everyday situations—as well as failed attempts to generate affect—should not be overlooked in order to fully appreciate Sino-African interactions. In so doing, Wang persuasively connects a family in a rural community, with little overt influence on national destiny, to the movements and ideologies that helped shape contemporary China.

Within a unified switched-control framework, this book investigates the high-performance control designs and theoretic analyses for teleoperation systems, including the joint space and task space teleoperations, the homogeneous and heterogeneous teleoperations, and the single-master single-slave and multi-master multi-slave teleoperations. Incomplete big data are frequently encountered in many industrial applications, such as recommender systems, the Internet of Things, intelligent transportation, cloud computing, and so on. It is of great significance to analyze them for mining rich and valuable knowledge and patterns. Latent feature analysis (LFA) is one of the most popular representation learning methods tailored for incomplete big data due to its high accuracy, computational efficiency, and ease of scalability. The crux of analyzing incomplete big data lies in addressing the uncertainty problem caused by their incomplete characteristics. However, existing LFA methods do not fully consider such uncertainty.
