It is 1815 and Napoleon has been defeated. Lieutenant Ralph Fairfax returns to England haunted by his war in Spain. His hopes for peace are shattered by the secret his father never confessed. Instead of marrying his neighbour Flavia Stanton, he is kidnapped, and wakes as a convict, bound for the prison colony of New South Wales. Here he must fight to survive, trapped between his conflicting identities of gentleman and convict. Meanwhile Flavia, devastated by Ralph's desertion, tries to rebuild her life. But her generosity and growing awareness of injustice set her at odds with her family. A fateful decision plays out against the demands for political reform, which culminate in the Peterloo Massacre of 1819. Written with a strong sense of social turmoil of the post-Napoleonic war era, this poignant love story follows the fates of two people swept up in the currents of their times. War and revolution have disrupted the old order. In both England and Australia, new voices demand their rights"--Back cover.
For several decades, Desiree Leigh Thompson lived beneath the shadow of trauma and abuse. Having grown up in a violent, dysfunctional household and experiencing her first sexual assault at age twelve, she went on to suffer from several mental health disorders and self-destructive behaviours, forever trying to hide herself out of shame and self-loathing. As a result, she lost all sense of self-worth, self-identity, and belonging. However, all of this began to change when she found the bravery to begin psychotherapy and walk along the path to healing. Through a supported process of gaining awareness and letting go, she was able to emerge, at last, into self-love. In Healing Worthlessness, a courageous book about trauma and recovery, Thompson shares her story in detail in hopes of helping other survivors find their own healing paths. She also addresses the global issue of intimate partner violence, the oppression of women under patriarchy, and the social and cultural reasons why society at large often suppresses and denies stories of abuse. She also overviews the research behind childhood trauma and its links to adult dysfunction, repeated victimization, and chronic health repercussions. As Thompson herself discovered, it is never too late to escape the legacy of abuse and change your life; if, as a survivor, you have a desire to change—to heal your wounded relationship with yourself, and subsequently, your relationships with others—then what you need (and deserve) is encouragement and support to help you get there. Healing Worthlessness is a multifaceted restorative tool, a call to action, and an invaluable resource for helping survivors escape toxic patterns, push past their limitations, feel joy again, and connect deeply with themselves and those they love.

To Defend this Sunrise examines how black women on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua engage in regional, national, and transnational modes of activism to remap the nation’s racial order under conditions of increasing economic precarity and autocracy. The book considers how, since the 19th century, black women activists have resisted historical and contemporary patterns of racialized state violence, economic exclusion, territorial dispossession, and political repression. Specifically, it explores how the new Sandinista state under Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo has utilized multicultural rhetoric as a mode of political, economic, and territorial dispossession. In the face of the Sandinista state’s co-optation of multicultural discourse and growing authoritarianism, black communities have had to recalibrate their activist strategies and modes of critique to resist these new forms of “multicultural dispossession.” This concept describes the ways that state actors and institutions drain multiculturalism of its radical, transformative potential by espousing the rhetoric of democratic recognition while simultaneously supporting illiberal practices and policies that undermine black political demands and weaken the legal frameworks that provide the basis for the claims of these activists against the state.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common mental-health condition in children and is present in most countries around the world. Although there is an abundance of literature on ADHD with plenty of scientific information, this condition remains controversial and often under-diagnosed. Many books have been written for parents about ADHD but most of them are quite scientific. They can be difficult to navigate, especially if you are a parent with some symptoms of ADHD yourself. This book is a go-to guide for parents and teachers, providing up-to-date knowledge in a simple, easy-to-read format. It is filled with information your doctor would like to provide, but is often unable to do so in the limited appointment times available. This book also gives a framework and practical tips for how you can manage and advocate for your child in different settings, with or without medication. It summarises evidence to date for medication and alternative therapies, examines commonly held beliefs about ADHD, and debunks myths. ADHD Go-To Guide book has been written by a developmental paediatrician (Desiree Silva) and an ADHD coach (Michele Toner), both of whom are passionate about improving the lives of children with ADHD and their families. They both have over 20 years of experience in the field and recognise the need for this practical guide.

Drawing on recent cultural and feminist critiques of science, Hellegers offers finely nuanced readings of John Donne’s Anniversaries, John Milton’s Paradise Lost, and Anne Finch’s The Spleen.
