This original haunted house tale, with a unique plot and compellingly vivid characters, moves from uneasy to creepy to all-out 'keep the lights on' terror." —Library Journal, starred review. In the tumultuous summer of 1974, in the shadowy rooms of a rundown mansion in Rhode Island, renowned psychologist Dr. Piers Preis-Herald brings together a group of seven collegiate researchers to study the inner lives of man’s closest relative―the primate. They set out to teach their subject, who would eventually be known to the world as Smithy, American Sign Language. But as the summer deepens and the history of the mansion manifests, the messages signed by their research subject become increasing spectral. Nearly twenty-five years after the Smithy Project ended in tragedy at Trevor Hall, questions remain: Was Smithy a hoax? A clever mimic? A Rorschach projection of humanity’s greatest hopes and fears? Or was he indeed what devotees of metaphysics have claimed for so long: a link between our world and the next?

The 115th volume of the Yale Series of Younger Poets is a lyrical and polyvocal exploration of what it means to fight for yourself “Bailey invites us to see what twenty-first-century life is like for a young woman of the Black diaspora in the long wake of a history of slavery, brutality, and struggling for freedoms bodily and psychological.” —Carl Phillips, from the Foreword The 115th volume of the Yale Series of Younger Poets, What Noise Against the Cane is a lyric quest for belonging and freedom, weaving political resistance, Caribbean folklore, immigration, and the realities of Black life in America. Desiree C. Bailey begins by reworking the epic in an oceanic narrative of bondage and liberation in the midst of the Haitian Revolution. The poems move into the contemporary Black diaspora, probing the mythologies of home, belief, nation, and womanhood. Series judge Carl Phillips observes that Bailey’s “poems argue for hope and faith equally. . . . These are powerful poems, indeed, and they make a persuasive argument for the transformative powers of steady defiance.”
My name is Desiree. Yes, I was married and divorced three times. And each divorce, I asked for my maiden name back. I am a mother of two daughters and have eight adult grandchildren and three great-granddaughters. I’m taking this time out in my life to write my story because there are so many children and adults crying out for help. They cannot afford Dr. Phil or Oprah or trust anyone enough to talk to them. At one point of time, I tried to reach out to both of them and hit a dead end each time. I always wondered how people get in touch with them. Twenty-five or more years ago, I started writing Oprah a letter when she had Ms. Erica Kane and all of the All My Children husbands on her show with her. The letter turned into a book! So I never tried to send it. I called it Will the Real Erica Kane Please Stand Up. (All the Men I Loved.) Not who loved me because I really can’t tell who loved me. My journey took me to hell and back. Through all of my trials and tribulations, I had to come back to Jesus. When he said, “I will never leave nor forsake you,” he meant just that. It gets hard sometimes to believe it, but when you keep hitting a brick wall and facing death in the face so many times, you start wondering, why am I still here? It’s not as though we can stand in a line and pick our race or our mother and father. Wow! Would life be any different? Believe me—it’s only by the grace of God that any of us are still here. We all have a purpose for being on this earth. My belief is my purpose is to encourage others to believe in yourself and trust that God really does have your back no matter what the devil throw your way. As the song says, “He paid it all.” Meaning, Jesus paid for all of our sins, and I thank him for allowing me to be alive long enough to acknowledge that. So here’s my story.

Here he must fight to survive, trapped between his conflicting identities of gentleman and convict. Meanwhile Flavia, devastated by Ralph's desertion, tries to rebuild her life. But her generosity and growing awareness of injustice set her at odds with her family. A fateful decision plays out against the demands for political reform, which culminate in the Peterloo Massacre of 1819. Written with a strong sense of social turmoil of the post-Napoleonic war era, this poignant love story follows the fates of two people swept up in the currents of their times. War and revolution have disrupted the old order. In both England and Australia, new voices demand their rights"--Back cover.

Pandemics, conflicts, and crises have increased suffering, death, and loss worldwide. The growing phenomenon of online interactions by the bereaved with the online presence of their deceased loved ones has recently come to the attention of caring professionals. Many questions emerge. How do we understand and respond to digital memorialization? What do we make of digital identities and continuing bonds? How can we engage with digital bereavement communities? What is the future of digital death and bereavement rituals and practices? How have forms of technospirituality and cybergnosticism emerged? How do counselors and carers respond to advances in the digital afterlife? Graham Joseph Hill and Desiree Geldenhuys examine existing therapeutic responses to death and bereavement practices and evaluate the efficacy in meeting the needs of mourners in a digital context. Geldenhuys and Hill explore the rising interest in spirituality and the phenomenon of technospirituality, including interest in the afterlife. The authors outline new death and bereavement practices in the digital public sphere. Hill and Geldenhuys offer ways that therapeutic and care practitioners can meet these needs. Finally, the authors develop new proposals for counseling, pastoral, and spiritual carers to help them address the needs of the bereaved.
This book seeks to examine how Sufi thought might provide critical understanding of contemporary life and a pathway towards the recovery of a more meaningful existence. Rumi’s mystical teachings are of great value at a time of rampant materialism and indiscriminate consumerism, and have the potential to illuminate the precarious state of the world, as well as revitalize contemporary social critique, eco-philosophy and bio-semiotics in what is increasingly being regarded as a post-secular age.
