What do all school children have in common? Something they often find difficult, frequently dislike and sometimes even hate? The answer is homework of course, and eight year old Emma is struggling desperately with her Maths and times tables in modern day London. But there may be a solution to her problem: An amazingly exciting and at the same time disconcerting adventure begins when a brown hare from Medieval Germany suddenly leaps out of Emmas homework! This lovable furry creature, Albrecht, invites Emma, her little sister Jenny and their beloved bunny rabbit Polo back in time to the famous city of Nuremberg. From here they embark upon a truly tantalysing quest to find the fabled Magic Funnel. This ingenious device ,so legend says, was able to pour knowledge into a pupils head without the need to study or read books! In Nuremberg they meet the citys most famous son, the painter Albrecht Duerer, who becomes their host. On their Quest many famous historical and sometimes even hysterical figures cross their paths, including the Emperor Karl the Great, the villain Eppelein von Gailingen, the inventor of the first globe Martin Behaim and the harlequin Till Eulenspiegel, to name a few. During their adventure the girls have the opportunity to sample local specialties such as Lebkuchen and Nuremberger sausages. They also learn about some of the famous landmarks of the city such as the Deep Well, the Beautiful Fountain and the Spital of the Holy Spirit, and of course the world famous Christmas Market. But will they be able to find the fabled and elusive Nuremberger Funnel and get to use its magical powers? Moreover how will the children get back home if they manage to complete their Quest? The adventures in this book are based on legends and historical figures associated with the medieval town of Nuremberg and are grounded in folk lore.
ABOUT THIS BOOK For those of you adult readers who have ever wondered about what it would be like to aspire to become a gynaecologist, well now is your chance to find out! Desmond Parunia, in writing Caught in a Flap, tells a story seen through the eyes of a young schoolboy, Mikey Jones. Mikey who emigrated to sunny Rhodesia in the late sixties, becomes fascinated by the mystery of female anatomy after spending most of his free time frolicking in swimming pools surrounded by bikini-clad beauties. Having only two brothers and no sisters only added to the intrigue! Nothing like this ever happened at Epsom Baths! Desmond takes us through the frustration and excitement of a young man growing up in a world where there appeared to be an endless supply of new experiences. A world where one was about to discover rude films, pop music, stereo Hi Fi, candy-coloured super fast Japanese motorcycles, driving cars, drinking beer and of course..girls! Mikey has a reasonable shot at most of the material things, but the girls remain elusive, particularly from the point of revealing their dark secret! In desperation, Mikey tries to impress them with his ambition to become a gynaecologist. The story then goes on to unravel a disjointed and sometimes hilarious escapade of life sketches capturing mainly the highs but sometimes the lows of what it was really like fulfilling that ambition. Please note that the author does not recommend you reading this book to your children at bed time!
I recall seeing a snake that had been run over by a car in front of my grandmother's house. The tires had sliced the snake in half, so that a toad that had just been swallowed could hop out. ""Escaping the belly of a beast sure makes an old toad laugh."".
