Hardin's story is told, but so is Helen Mrose's. Martin Mrose and Laura Jennings are little known today, but their lives are integral to the mystery. Written for a general audience, the story includes footnotes for those interested in knowing more, footnotes historian Leon Metz called "the best I've ever seen." DENNIS McCOWN was born and raised in Wyoming and is proud of his "cowboy" heritage. Though he has traveled widely, he always comes back to his roots. After hearing references to Helen Beulah Mrose, McCown spent sixteen years researching her story. A member of the Wild West History Association (WWHA), McCown is a former member of the National Outlaw-Lawman Association (NOLA) and the Western Outlaw-Lawman Association (WOLA), which merged to form the WWHA. McCown is also a member of SASS, the Single-Action Shooting Society. Today McCown is a college instructor in Texas.

From San Francisco to the Ginza in Tokyo, Lefty O’Doul relates the untold story of one of baseball’s greatest hitters, most colorful characters, and the unofficial father of professional baseball in Japan. Lefty O’Doul (1897–1969) began his career on the sandlots of San Francisco and was drafted by the Yankees as a pitcher. Although an arm injury and his refusal to give up the mound clouded his first four years, he converted into an outfielder. After four Minor League seasons he returned to the Major Leagues to become one of the game’s most prolific power hitters, retiring with the fourth-highest lifetime batting average in Major League history. A self-taught “scientific” hitter, O’Doul then became the game’s preeminent hitting instructor, counting Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams as his top disciples. In 1931 O’Doul traveled to Japan with an All-Star team and later convinced Babe Ruth to headline a 1934 tour. By helping to establish the professional game in Japan, he paved the way for Hideo Nomo, Ichiro Suzuki, and Hideki Matsui to play in the American Major Leagues. O’Doul’s finest moment came in 1949, when General Douglas MacArthur asked him to bring a baseball team to Japan, a tour that MacArthur later praised as one of the greatest diplomatic efforts in U.S. history. O’Doul became one of the most successful managers in the Pacific Coast League and was instrumental in spreading baseball’s growth and popularity in Japan. He is still beloved in Japan, where in 2002 he was inducted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame.

Are the past participial forms that occur in passive and perfect periphrases substantially identical or should they rather be distinguished into accidentally homophonous passive and perfect(ive) participles? This book discusses the long-standing mystery of past participial (non-)identity on the basis of a broad range of synchronic data from Germanic and Romance, eventually focussing on German and English as these draw the most relevant distinctions (e.g. auxiliary alternation, a passive auxiliary that is not BE). Together with some contrastive insights from Slavic as well as the diachrony of passive and perfect periphrases, this clearly points to an identity-view. The novel approach that is laid out suggests that past participles conflate diathetic and aspectual properties. The former cause the suppression of an external argument, whereas the latter impose event-structure sensitive perfectivity, which only induces the completion of a situation if the underlying eventuality denotes a simple change of state. An approach along these lines sheds light on the intricate properties of past participles and the auxiliaries they occur with, the determinants of auxiliary selection as well as the interplay of argument and event structure.

Pot Luck Spokesman? The information void in the hours following the shooting of US President Ronald Reagan late Monday afternoon, March 30, 1981, spawned many false rumors and misinformation, which White House political adviser Lyn Nofziger understood threatened the credibility of the White House. He therefore took the podium before the 200 plus assembled press in Ross Hall to tell them that he would be bringing with him a credible physician to brief them once the president was out of surgery. However, he didn’t have many options to draw from for that credible physician. At the hospital, the surgeons tending the three shooting victims had first-hand information about the afternoon’s events, but each surgeon knew only about his own injured patient. White House physician Dan Ruge meanwhile had been at the president’s side throughout the afternoon and was a possible candidate, but his White House association made his credibility suspect according to White House aides. The job became the drafting of the most logical person to be spokesman. That would have been the seasoned physician CEO of the George Washington University Medical Center Ron Kaufman, but he was out of town. Next up was Dennis O’Leary, the physician dean for clinical affairs, as the preferred spokesman. To the White House, O’Leary was a total unknown, but a review of his credentials would hardly have been reassuring. He had originally been recruited to George Washington University as a blood specialist. Reticent by nature, he had minimal public-relations and public-speaking experience, save two years as a member of his hometown high school debate team. He had no surgical or trauma training or experience. But beggars can’t be choosers, as the saying goes. Kindly stated, O’Leary was probably the least bad choice to serve as White House/hospital spokesman to inform the world of the status of the wounded President Reagan, special agent Tim McCarthy, and press secretary Jim Brady. Yet, with a little bit of luck, it might all work out. And it did.

These seventeen stories ranging in length from a single paragraph to fifty pages explore issues of voice and silence, identity and its erasure in a style that is often poetic, frequently dark and somber, and occasionally humorous. From many different narrative perspectives, the author offers a jeremiad of sorts, urging readers to examine their own virtues and vices before venerating or condemning others. The title story, for example, describes the difficulties faced by a young woman veterinarian in the Netherlands. Not all of her problems originate with the men she meets who are skeptical about a woman's ability to work with large farm animals. In this bildungsroman of thematic oppositions--youth / age, elite / working class / north / south, city / country, male / female--the protagonist, Jacqueline, must come to know herself before she can exude the confidence she needs in her work and her life. The author doesn't let himself off the hook, either. In an autobiographical narrative, "Northfield," he discusses the inability to remember and the partial failures that result from this shortcoming. Shorter pieces in the book in various ways illustrate a number of human foibles and follies that spring from the limitations of knowledge and recall.
