A riveting memoir by the former CEO of Black Entertainment Television (BET), about the glamorous and ugly moments of being a high-powered Black woman executive in the entertainment industry. Debra Lee has been the visionary responsible for elevating Black images and storytelling for decades with timeless television shows like The Game and Being Mary Jane. Now she’s telling her own story, in a page-turner, filled with electrifying behind-the-scenes stories that reveal how she went from a girl raised in the segregated South to leading the first Black company traded on the New York Stock Exchange and how she juggled social responsibility while managing a company targeted toward the Black community. Lee answers all of our questions about building an unapologetically Black enterprise as a Black woman. What to do when you’re forced to attend a board meeting eight weeks after a C-section. How to manage a team of men when you’re the first female CEO at the company. How she learned the hard way to say no to those in power when their vision didn’t align with her purpose. I Am Debra Lee tackles lessons that women CEOs rarely dare to. She addresses her personal struggles with motherhood and “having it all,” navigating reproductive choice, fertility, and #MeToo as she helped build the leading entertainment company for Black audiences globally. As she has done her whole career, in this book, she opens the door for others to come after her, by sharing the truth behind her own inspiring story of power, perseverance, and success. “Debra Lee is a force! I love her candor and vulnerability within these pages. I Am Debra Lee is designed to make an impact.” –Alicia Keys “I was glued to Debra’s every word in this memoir.” –Taraji P. Henson

Decades before Walt Disneys dream took root in central Florida, tourists flocked to a place on the banks of the St. Johns River known simply as South Jacksonville. Although small and rural, it played a large part in the history of Florida, helping establish a premier tourist destination. South Jacksonville evolved into San Marco, whose unique history rivals anything found in a best-selling novel. That history includes steamships and bridges, ostriches and alligators, sharpshooters and daredevils, train wrecks, haunted theaters, sprawling plantations, Oriental gardens, The Coney Island of the South, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Babe Ruth, John Phillip Sousa, Tom Mix, and an elephant named Toddles. All played a part in the rich and varied history that is San Marco.
About the Book Have you ever walked through a cemetery and read the headstones? All you see are the names, the day they were born, and the day they died. If you are anything like Debra Bright, you walk away wondering who they were or what they were like, and what was their life like. All you see is the beginning of their life and the end of their life, but what about the middle? That was the inspiration of Debra writing her grandmother’s story; she wanted to fill in the middle. The world has changed, people's interest has changed. In the past, stories about family were passed on from one generation to the next, but this is a practice that has faded into the past. The memory of a person now dies with the last person who actually knew that person. Afterward, it's like that person never existed. Writing this book, Debra’s grandmother’s memory will live forever. About the Author Debra Bright grew up in a time period when family was there for each other. No matter what, they opened their homes to each other. That was the case with Debra; she grew up without her mother in her life, so her father, who was single at the time, took his four-month-old daughter to live with his mother. She lived with her grandmother the first four years of her life. The bond that they had was more like that of a mother and daughter bond that lasted throughout her grandmother’s life. Because of her closeness with her grandmother, Debra was able to capture some of her memories and put them together for family who never had the opportunity to know her.
