Raised in the Delta of Mississippi, Jan Cowan is repeatedly molested by her mothers lesbian lover, Judy Christine Hays, a small-town cop. She then displays their nude bodies in a public park on Beale Street, a thriving downtown tourist attraction. As the story unfolds, a private investigator, hired by one of the victims father to find the killer, is falsely arrested after being caught near the crime scene where the fifth and final victim is found. One week following the arrest, Jan is greeted at the office by a pair of local fishermen who discovered her badge inside of a trash bag while fishing. Unbeknownst to the fishermen, the bag also contained solid evidence of the murders.

What attracts young, relatively affluent, well-educated, and highly assimilated women to the most traditional, right-wing, patriarchal, and fundamentalist branch of Judaism? The answers she discovers lead her beyond an analysis of religious renewal to those issues all women and men confront in public and private life. Kaufman interviewed and observed 150 ba'alot teshuva. She uses their own stories, in their own words, to show us how they make sense of the choices they have made. Lamenting their past pursuit of individual freedom over social responsibility, they speak of searching for shared meaning and order, and finding it in orthodoxy. The laws and customs of Orthodox Judaism have been formulated by men, and it is men who enforce those laws and control the Orthodox community. The leadership is dominated by men. But the women do not experience theologically-imposed subordination as we might expect. Although most ba'alot teshuva reject feminism or what they perceive as feminism, they maintain a gender consciousness that incorporates aspects of feminist ideology, and often use feminist rhetoric to explain their lives. Kaufman does not idealize the ba'alot teshuva world. Their culture does not accommodate the non-Orthodox, the homosexual, the unmarried, the divorced. Nor do the women have the mechanisms or political power to reject what is still oppressive to them. They must live within the authority of a rabbinic tradition and social structure set by males. Like other religious right women, their choices reinforce authoritarian trends current in today's society. Rachel's Daughters provides a fascinating picture of how newly orthodox women perceive their role in society as more liberating than oppressive.

While some philosophers feel that Plato corrupted the practice of Western metaphysics, others feel his legacy has been abandoned to the detriment of Western thought. Even though Michael Oakeshott is well known for his critique of rationalism, and his denial that human reason is capable of achieving eternal truths--truths such as those articulated by Plato and his contemporaries--Oakeshott does not view Plato as the source of either error or truth. He instead considers Plato to be the proponent of an important dialectical manner of thinking. In The Enemies of Perfection, author Debra Candreva argues that Plato's philosophy is among the most important influences on Oakeshott's thought, with his debts to Plato far outweighing his criticisms. Further, Candreva's examination of Oakeshott's treatment of Plato forms the basis of an argument against the view that a radical gap between ancient and modern thought renders ancient philosophy either inaccessible or irrelevant to current thinking.

Designing to support operator SA reduces the incidence of human error, which has been found to occur largely due to failures in SA. Whereas many previous human factors efforts have focused on design at the perceptual and surface feature level, SA-oriented design focuses on the operator's information needs and cognitive processes as they juggle to integrate information from many sources and achieve multiple competing goals. Thus it addresses design from a system's perspective. By applying theoretical and empirical information on SA to the system design process, human factors practitioners can create designs to support SA across a wide variety of domains and design issues. This book serves as a helpful reference to that end.
