Interrogations of materiality and geography, narrative framework and boundaries, and the ways these scholarly pursuits ripple out into the wider cultural sphere. Early medieval England as seen through the lens of comparative and interconnected histories is the subject of this volume. Drawn from a range of disciplines, its chapters examine artistic, archaeological, literary, and historical artifacts, converging around the idea that the period may not only define itself, but is often defined from other perspectives, specifically here by modern scholarship. The first part considers the transmission of material culture across borders, while querying the possibilities and limits of comparative and transnational approaches, taking in the spread of bread wheat, the collapse of the art-historical "decorative" and "functional", and the unknowns about daily life in an early medieval English hall. The volume then moves on to reimagine the permeable boundaries of early medieval England, with perspectives from the Baltic, Byzantium, and the Islamic world, including an examination of Vercelli Homily VII (from John Chrysostom's Greek Homily XXIX), Hārūn ibn Yaḥyā's Arabic descriptions of Barṭīniyah ("Britain"), and an consideration of the Old English Orosius. The final chapters address the construction of and responses to "Anglo-Saxon" narratives, past and present: they look at early medieval England within a Eurasian perspective, the historical origins of racialized Anglo-Saxonism(s), and views from Oceania, comparing Hiberno-Saxon and Anglican Melanesian missions, as well as contemporary reactions to exhibitions of Anglo-Saxon kingdoms and Pacific Island cultures. Dr. Carlton M. Mills, a native of South Caicos, has been a passionate educator in the Turks and Caicos Islands throughout his professional life. He began his teaching career in 1981 as a history teacher at the Majorie Basden High (formerly Pierson High School). He eventually moved up the ranks to Vice Principal in 1988 and Principal in 1990, becoming the first Turks and Caicos Islander to hold that position. He also served as Principal of the Raymond Gardiner High School in North Caicos from 1992-1997 and the University of the West Indies Representative in the Turks & Caicos Islands from 1998 to 2010. Dr Mills also served as Vice Principal of the Turks and Caicos Islands Community College from 1997 – 2007. He was also an adjunct lecturer for Sociology. After the General Election in 2007, he was appointed as Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture. Following the suspension of the country’s constitution by the British Government in 2009, he was appointed by the Governor to serve as a member of the Advisory Council. He holds a Certificate in Teacher Education, Certificates in Social Work and Public Administration (UWI), B.A. History & Sociology (UWI), Dip. In Education (London), Med. In Education (Bristol) and a Doctorate degree in Education from the University of Sheffield. He has written and published several articles on education and on the history of the Turks and Caicos Islands in the local and regional media. He has also presented papers on education at various conferences in the region and in the UK. He is the General Editor of the book A History of the Turks & Caicos Islands (2008). Dr Mills and his wife, Debby-Lee Mills own and operate MILLS Institute, an elementary school in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands. Debby-Lee V. Mills is a native of Bottle Creek, North Caicos. She is a teacher by profession and has served in the government schools for 27 years, ten of those years as a principal. She is currently co-owner (with her husband) of a local private elementary school, Mills Institute, located in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands. Mrs. Mills has a passion for education management, mentoring young teachers and teaching of Creative Writing. She is an avid reader who also loves to cook, decorate, garden and entertain friends and family. She has a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Leicester, UK. She is married to local historian and educator Dr Carlton Mills. Mrs. Mills has four adult children, one stepdaughter and is the proud grandmother of six. She currently lives with her family in Miramar, Florida.

The first part of the volume draws on written and pictorial sources, archaeology, place-names, and the history of the English language to discover what crops and livestock people raised, and what tools and techniques were used to produce them. In part two, using a series of landscape studies - place-names, maps, and the landscape itself, the authors explore how these techniques might have been combined into working agricultural regimes in different parts of the country. A picture emerges of an agriculture that changed from an essentially prehistoric state in the sub-Roman period to what was recognisably the beginning of a tradition that only ended with the Second World War. Anglo-Saxon farming was not only sustainable, but infinitely adaptable to different soils and geology, and to a climate changing as unpredictably as it is today.

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) aims to construct a Sino-centric transcontinental infrastructure network in Asia, Europe, Africa and beyond. Within this initiative, the China–Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC) is a vital strategic component. The shortcut to the Indian Ocean seeks to improve China’s energy security and facilitate trade. Defying Beijing: Societal Resistance to the Belt and Road in Myanmar shows how Myanmar was able to capitalise on Chinese BRI ambitions to achieve its own desired outcomes during the country’s political liberalisation in the 2010s. Belying the asymmetrical relationship between these two nations, the Myitsone hydropower dam was suspended, the Letpadaung copper mine’s contract was renegotiated, and the Kyaukphyu deep seaport project was downsized. China offered concessions to Myanmar instead of pressuring it to honour those signed agreements. Contrasting a common proposition that US-Myanmar rapprochement disrupted the BRI projects in Myanmar, Defying Beijing argues that the rise of new foreign policy actors – citizens – made project continuation costlier for Naypyidaw in the course of political liberalisation in the 2010s. Naypyidaw was pressured to renegotiate terms with Beijing in the wake of social outcry in the country. Defying Beijing advances our understanding of Chinese–Myanmar BRI relations and demonstrates how citizens can change the course of events of BRI cooperation despite oppressive political environments and an imbalanced bargaining structure. In post-coup Myanmar, Naypyidaw’s policy options were not conditioned by public opinion or protests; nonetheless, armed resistance has posed new domestic constraints in the CMEC’s implementation. Clearly, bilateral economic agreements without citizens’ endorsement are fraught with legitimacy problems and instabilities.
